@Ironduke, No.41 left without a replacement being purchased so Paqueta could easily go on that basis? Scamacca also left with no new striker to take his place.
I'm curious to what extent clubs really do sign the replacement before they've sold the outgoing player. Surely it's not at all common? And if, in those cases, there's specific set of circs. Such the club being rich and easily under the FFP threshold, or the outgoing player going on loan or a free so fee not being such an issue that the 'new' club can't hold the selling club to ransom.
Spurs will give an indication as they are in exactly the same position as we were in having to replace their best player in a pivotal position. If Levy has done what you would expect you would see a bid that is enough to capture their target in the next week or so if not sooner.
I suppose until your player goes, he’s your player. We sign a DM to replace Rice, Rice fails Arsenal medical & deal is off. Then we have a possible surplus player.
Are we still lacking that ‘driving with the ball’ ability from our midfield? We have the defensive side sorted, the passing/leadership/creativity side sorted. Not sure we have a player who will pick the ball up in our half & run to the opposite box.
Álvarez is considered ‘progressive’ with the ball so we’ll have to see if he can do it. If he can we should be ok with the height & physicality of Soucek (especially if he can add goals), & Paqueta (if he stays). Not to mention we have Fornals too.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Moyes prioritises a new winger over a striker, and plays Bowen there instead.
I don’t want that but Moyes seems to have suggested that a couple of times. Still think Antonio will leave so we should be signing at least two strikers.

Alvarez has good stats for progressive carries, but you have to remember that he has been playing for Ajax, picking the ball up deep and then bringing it forward where the opposition often sit deep against them. I think some of his stats will be very inflated as a result of where he was playing and who he was playing for.
I think we can. Emerson, Benrahma, Fornals, Bowen, Paqueta, and (to a lesser extent) Coufal are all capable of carrying the ball up the field. It just means we will need to change the way we build up, rather than driving up the pitch centrally we need to be doing it down the flanks.
Last season Rice actually had the 5th highest number of progressive carries in the side (Benrama, Cornet, Bowen and Emerson all had more per 90), whilst Antonio & Coufal were only just behind.
Good strikers are hard to come by. We need a fox in the box who can latch onto the loose ball and create panic so I suggest Bowen closer to target man with Pqueta being given a free role just in front of the midfield trio, Souchek, Fornals and JWP

Or if you can afford to keep them both, one gets the 'ump at not being first choice starter.
It's a team game after all :-)

Not just us then…
