  • Jorderz - logically that makes sense but in reality never plays out like that.
  • James Ward-Prowse will complete his move to West Ham tomorrow (Sky Sports).
  • The very fact that he has a release clause at all is quite telling. I know they're common nowadays, but any player insisting on them is a red flag in my eyes.

The release clause is almost always added at the insistence of the club.
How is that logical though? A release clause forces a club to let a player go if a sufficient bid is made, whether they want to sell or not. If the club don't add one, they're not obliged to sell a player unless they want to. A club adding a release clause gives the power to the player, no?

I always saw it as a player/agent asking for a release clause so the club couldn't hold them to a long-term contract if they got interest from a bigger club that were prepared to meet the figure.

Putting it too simply, the player asks for the clause, the club fixes the price. In effect, it's to stop players going on sulk strike. When a club announces a buyout clause of e.g. €400 million, that's a declaration of intent from both sides. When the buyout clause is more realistic, that's because the relationship is more realistic.

If the buyout clause is £85 mil in 2024, then West Ham have the right to accept anything else offered. But they run the risk of Paquetá having "off-days" every game. In 6 months, if Man City offer £85 million, West Ham can do nothing.

So I guess everything depends on how much integrity Paquetá has.

Release clause would come from the player/agent side.

We don’t need to sell Paqueta. He has 4 years left so that’s a long time to sulk. If there’s an £85M release clause next summer, have a good season and prove you’re worth it.

Throwing a strop now and ending up in the reserves isn’t going to help with that. Or keeping your place in the Brazil team.

That’s what we’d like to happen, but in reality doesn’t always, I’m not saying he’ll throw a sulk / cause problems etc but the history of Arnie, Payet come to mind… Just saying, but I’d prefer you’re scenario of course 👍🏻
  • It'll be hard to convince to join us unless release clauses are involved

But its still win-win, we get substantial profit on a player that isn't "one of our own" and the bigger club get a player who's a year (or more) proven and less of a risky purchase even with the added cost which to those clubs isn't as significant

Sky report West Ham have no intention of selling Paqueta even if the price is right, as we don’t feel we have enough time to sign a replacement.

3 hours later sky said that man city are in talks wjth west ham over Paqueta. I think he will go. I actually thought hed go to newcastle next season, until man city showed interest.
    Hopefully we get Fofana 🤞

I hope you are right Berlin about Fofana but you can see the scenario where David being all moyeseh will want to sign the Scottish Lingard from Old Trafford because he has to pay them over the odds for their players as SAF has told him to.
  • I have seen that Fofana is waiting for us to put in a bid. But i think it could be wishful thinking. Mcsauce would be a typical Moyes signing, so i think you are more likely to be right 😂

  • Doesn’t sound like he’s ‘not for sale’ to me.
  • I personally wouldn't sell Paqueta for any less than we've sold Rice for. If he goes I'll be very disappointed, but I wouldn't mind if we got something like £60m, Cole Palmer and Taylor Harwood-Bellis. Then use the money to go and buy Balogun, Maatsen and Fofana.

I will be genuinely gutted if Paqueta leaves.
  • If Pep is such a big fan of his why didn’t he buy him last year.
  • If Pep is such a big fan of his why didn’t he buy him last year.

I think I read on here that Pep let West Ham take the risk in seeing whether Paqueta could hack it in the EPL.
  • If City and Pep desperately want him and you would think the Saudi's would pay the money after being delivered a treble by Pep. Then West Ham shouldn't sell for anything less than the 85m that his release clause activates for.
  • Very good article about transfer negotiations and well worth a read.

    An interesting article :+1:

Especially the bit about how clubs use 'rival interest' reported (ie. planted) in the media to strengthen their positions.

We should bear that in mind when we evaluate all the rumour and speculation!
  • It seems to me that SSN’s primary function is to destabilise clubs. Putting out statements such as “Paqueta is keen on Man City move” can’t help players at the club or potential incoming players to keep hearing these things. If it’s true we’ve had at least 4 possibly 5 players saying they want out. It’s only about a week or so since he claimed stories about his wanting to leave was fake news.
I think that outlets such as SSN should have to state where this info comes from and if it’s pure speculation then say as much.
  • I’ve said this before, but IMO the likes of SSN are used by clubs to unsettle players. They believe they have an “exclusive” , and don’t seem to realise they are just being used. I don’t claim to know any more, but until a deal is signed you can’t really believe what the ITK/experts on Sky are saying. ⚒

Yeold, small correction - Man City is majority owned by an Abu Dhabi group, not Saudi.

Agreement in principle & verbal offer seem to be the buzz phrases of this window.

They've still got to balance the books, can't just keep spending.
  • City have just lost gundogan and could potentially lose Silva. So i can see why theyd want Paqueta. I also think he's more likely to take the Debruyne role. Pep has publicly said that Foden could do better defensively.
  • Heard a rumour Kovacic has had a pretty serious injury in training, too.

    Already been confirmed he hasn't

That'll be mental for Paqueta to start over Foden

I know Foden has to do more defensively, but he is so clear of Paqueta it doesn't make sense this move

Also sounds like they have offered Bernardo Silva a new deal which they are confident he'll accept

    Ward-Prowse should be tomorrow.

Might have a half decent midfield available for Saturday if we can get JWP done by 12pm.
  • Cant see Moyes playing anybody new
  • Alvarez wont be match fit for a few weeks id imagine.
  • Alex Scott of to Bournmouth should have been all over that =)
