I assume (outside of Sullivans final say so) there's a heirarchy in terms of recruitment?

"Technical Director. Steidten will be responsible for the Club's overarching player recruitment strategy and scouting department"

It suggests that the owners are maneuvering the club into a setup where Steidten is strategy, and the manager is tactics -so Steidten defines the kind of football the team should be playing, and scouts and recruits players that fit into that format, while the manager -apart from obviously conferring with Steidten on style and players- is responsible for realising the vision on the pitch. Moyes is clearly a legacy hire who will either figure out cooperation with Steidten over the coming season, or be replaced for someone who "gets" it.

By the way, I just want to point out I called Scamacca leaving first and, like many visionaries, was scorned before my time. Let this be a lesson to you all!
  • I reckon Scamacca had seen enough to decide that without a change in tactics playing under David Moyes wasn't going to make him want to stay and I don't blame him.
  • Secret, City have a director of football so do you seriously believe he decides playing style and recruits the players and tells Pep to make it work how he wants it to work. I very much doubt it.
It can only work as a joint venture otherwise one or both is on a hiding to nothing.

Scamacca is just another failure in the clubs long list of strikers. That one is on Moyes.

I’m not sure. I think he was looking good until Paqueta’s injury and then things stuttered, and then he got injured. To me it seems like he wants out because it didn’t go as he imagined it, which is sort of fine, but also I wish he had the stomach to stick it out and prove himself to be the player he thinks he is.
We were told all last years window that Moyes not only had final say on transfers but he did regular checks of peoples personalities to make sure they fit in with the club. I don't think Scamacca is a bad player but he didn't do the selfless running for a team wanting to play possession based football that Moyes had wanted.

I don't blame the club either for selling him because we reverted to a low block counter attacking team again which doesn't suit Scamacca at all.

But the fact remains its another failure on the transfer front for the 50th+ striker we have signed that hasn't managed even half their contract length. Sold after one season. Its simply not good enough recruitment. If there is one position in our entire squad that had to be nailed down it was striker. We have all seen the list of players in the last decade we have had to sign in that position that have conveniently flopped and been sold.

EDIT: I would also like to boot here that once again we do not appear to have a ready replacement. Sure Mubama has been promoted. But with Antonio's future up in the air we are relying on Mubama to have a big impact. I hope it works and Mubama comes through big for us but this seems like a huge risk in my book.
  • It's always a risk to give an academy player a large role. But it's what we want, surely?
You can't have the + without the -

Good Work summarising what I wrote much more clearly!

I didn't scorn you for Scamacca wanting to leave. I did point out that it did seem to be the same story written 5 times by 5 different authors. Hahaha
  • I won't count any new signings until it is all done and dusted.

I won't be surprised if we end up signing the Cole Brothers (Carlton and Joe) for the third time, with Sullivan saying it is a carefully planned brilliant coup!.
  • Atalanta have just sold their striker for £72m, so I’d expect us to be able to negotiate a higher fee for Scamacca
  • Also, that striker they’ve just sold has barely played, and scored a not particularly impressive rate. Just an indicator of how mad the transfer market is at the moment.

Sadly for me our club is in somewhat of disarray, while there is no concrete evidence it’s for me somewhat evident to see…
One of our longest serving player’s , if not longest, Cresswell wanting out…
Our latest Italian international striker seemingly on his way out, discontent among others if reports are to be believed, something from our Manager butting heads with new technical/ transfer director, it just seems like out of all the PL clubs West Ham have managed to create an atmosphere nothing short of horrendous, this is only my opinion from the very outset, but if we are being honest something is very odd at the moment IMO.
Let’s hope we manage a few signings to improve the situation, but if not, Slacker, look away, we are in for a long, ugly season ahead IMO … I hope I am very wrong here, but it’s a concerning time at the moment….
  • Clearly the mood isn’t great, but I think it’s WAY too early to be calling it for a long ugly season, personally.

But apart from the cup success, last season in the PL wasn’t much different to rather ugly for the most IMO, that on top of losing our stand out best player and captain, IMO I’m just saying how I see it , but as said a few signing’s can change that

Mate, you’ve been on this glee club of a forum long enough…..

  • But as we are TODAY… anyone who thinks our club is in a better situation is IMO deluded…
Yeh, of course we have time to improve it by signing a few etc… but as it is today , we are worse off than last season.
    I’m only being realistic IMO

Yes, as it is today we are not looking great, but we have time to sort it out.

I’m not bothered about the result or display today but I am bothered about the signings we now need to make.

Totally agree, but depends who we manage to sign , these few signings are gonna have to improve our current squad, let’s hope Dithering Dave get’s his act into gear
  • I think by the end of the window we’ll be in a far better position. Do I think that’s soon enough? Depends what for. To stay up? Sure. Go have what I would consider to be a ‘good’ season? Maybe not.

  • I didn't scorn you for Scamacca wanting to leave. I did point out that it did seem to be the same story written 5 times by 5 different authors. Hahaha

    I didn't mention any names, Preston! ;-)
  • Looking at today’s team, has Cresswell actually left?
  • No but he wants to go because he wants a longer contract than we are prepared to give him apparently.
  • Why would players even want to come to us with all the talk about unrest about the manger and board
  • Money I guess ,Answerd my own question =)
  • Yes, it's a mess right now, and will be for another month. But Alvarez and (hopefully) JWP or Gallagher will make a difference. And a new manager in December will complete the recovery. It's the Sully way...😉🤔
  • Im not actually too bothered about Scamacca going... ive always felt that he actually looks awkward on the ball. Its just embarrassing the amount of strikers we have gone through now
  • Whilst I'd rather he stayed, I have no issue with him leaving if we actually made a profit (or at least not a loss!)
  • Spurs now being linked with JWP
  • I liked Scamacca, I thought he gave us an extra punch up front, especially with his long range shooting. I believe he was unhappy because he was asked to play alone up front which was obviuosly alien to him, he is not as powerful as Antonio and cant hold possession, given Ings or Bowen as strike partner we would have scored more goals. All of which is wishful thinking as he was injured for long periods. Our best attacking options have come in pairs, Hurst/Peters, MacVenniie/Cottee, Hartson/Kitson to name a few. I wish him well.
  • Can we just get Arnautovic back for a year

Could do but then he'll get his head turned by an offer from the Saudis in January and he'll be off.
