Summer Transfer Window 2023

  • Not aimed at you, Herb, but is that not an obvious thing to say? We just pocketed £105m.

I think the issue is how - and when - we spend it.

Given Moyes admitted that we weren't ready for the start of last season because key signings didn't have a pre-season, I can't quite believe that we appear to be putting ourselves in the exact same situation.

It doesn't seem we're close to signing anyone before the D&R game on Saturday, which is no biggy in itself, but that means we have just three weeks and two games before the new season to sign and integrate two, three, four players if we want to avoid the problems we had last year.

People are saying 'it's only Bournemouth' first up, but four of our first six are against Chelsea, Brighton, City and Liverpool. To not have your squad ready for those games could mean another slow start in the league.

I have tried to approach this window with a bit more of a pragmatic view, but we just seemed to have let it drift and we're over half way through now and with 23 days until the new season we're in a weaker position (minus Rice, Lanzini, Nevin and Warburton) than when we won in Prague.

Just feels a bit like we have no idea what we're doing.
  • Once again i'm getting more and more frustrated the longer this transfer window goes on.
If you believe the transfer rumours and that's all i've got to go on it seems like there's more players that are going to leave West Ham than are coming in.
Europa league football i thought would be quite a catch for players but it doesn't seem so.
David Moyes is a ditherer and he didn't get that reputation for nothing.
If we do manage to sign some decent players then i will apologise for this rant.

Thing is, I don't doubt that we'll sign decent players. We signed decent players last summer, but it took them an age to settle. We didn't see the best of Paqueta and Kehrer until the back end of the season, and we've yet to see the best of Scamacca and anything of Cornet.

I dunno. I like to think there's some kind of masterplan at work, but I'm seeing absolutely no evidence of it.

Yep I think it's crazy. People were saying we've done well over the Rice situation and we were correct to hold out for the money and we've done over Arsenal. The deal took an absolute age but guess what, Arsenal got their man and their other targets and they all played in their friendly last night. Meanwhile we are letting more people leave than getting in and all our friendlies have been with the squad split in half and main bulk maybe getting some time against Dagenham.

Without having looked too deeply into it, it does seem like other teams have their international players back playing. Ours only returned on Monday, but Paqueta hasn't even done that. Our key man hasn't even begun pre-season training. I find that a bit mad, to be honest.

A lot of our players played a lot of minutes against Spurs, will have had a near-18 hour flight home yesterday/today plus the jet-lag to get over, so probably won't be at 100% for Saturday. I would imagine the returning internationals will only be playing 45 minutes, with the rest being made up of the U23s again.

Which means our first team will have just two games together before the new season starts, which may or may not include new signings.

Feels like a bit of a mess of a pre-season.

I read that Paqueta got extended leave as he got injured playing with Brazil and had to stay with their medical team for an extea week. Not ideal, but i guess hes entitled to his holiday.

    Cheers BH 👍
  • What about Vlasic? Haven't seen him in any of the pictures of the international players returning. He doesn't even have a squad number.

No doubt he wants out, and Moyes is happy to get him out, but nothing seems to be happening. If Torino won't pay what we want, shouldn't he be back training?
  • The only thing I don’t get about our pre season is why we’ve decided to go on an Australian tour with half a squad for less than a week. I get we want to boost our images overseas, but it just seems a weird way of doing it.
  • All about those dingo dollars

It's obviously very poor timing given the short summer break this year, but I suspect it's because we were due to go the summer of 2020 I believe, and now is probably the first chance since.

    Some positive transfer news.

FabRom has reported we're close to agreeing a £14m deal with City for Carlos Borges. 19-year-old winger with a phenomenal record for their U21s.

The money suggests he won't be a U21 player here. Left-footed, so possibly cover/competition for Bowen on the right?
  • No idea who he is but Twitter seems to have gone nuts for him
  • 21 goals and 10 assists in 24 PL2 games.

4 goals and 1 assist in 3 FL Trophy games.

Admittedly at least a couple of levels lower than PL, but he's certainly got a good reputation.
  • Just looked at a few clips of the lad and he looks absolutely rapid.
  • Question:

But can he do it on a cold, overcast, afternoon in stoke!

    ⤵️

  • He's played 79 games at youth level.

    55 goals and 42 assists.

    At any level, that's mad.

And not even wearing winter gloves......
  • I have never even heard of this guy, let alone seen him play. But at that sort of fee he could be next Savio Nserecko
  • If he is we keep him, if not then City buy him back in two years time.
  • And not even wearing winter gloves......

Well, it was in May 😂🤣😂
  • Seen some rumours online that Southampton may want to bring Danny Ings back. I wonder whether this Borges is to cover for Ings, and then Ings can move to Southampton in part exchange for JWP.

Can Southampton afford Danny Ings? £125k p/w with us, apparently.

Forget Carlos Borges, I want us to sign Oscar Bobb. What a name!

  • I'm glad we've appointed a woman, tbh. I know it doesn't really matter, but for me, if people want to grow the women's game then women should be in these top jobs.
