Also I've said it before but I prefer Antonio as a wide player. He's has the ability to dig out a decent cross like last night.

I don't think he's still got the legs (quite literally given his hamstrings) to work up and down the line and help out defensively as our wide players are expected to do. He was out on his feet at the 60/70 minute mark in a lot of games last season, he'd be done inside 30 if he was putting in a shift defensively (other than at corners) as well.
  • Yeah I know what you mean but in an ideal world he wouldn't have to play a whole 90. I'd like him and Bowen to provide competition for each other with the odd stint up front. Just need to have a few different options imo.
  • Yarmolenko joins Al Ain on one-year deal
Andriy Yarmolenko has joined Abu Dhabi-based side Al Ain on a one-year deal. I wish him well.
  • Linked again this morning to Hoffenheim LB David Raum (by Jacob Steinberg)

I think we need a LB as much as we need a striker. Just watched the goals from the Ipswich game (link below) and theirs came as a result of poor defending by Cresswell.

Yes it's pre-season, but he remains a big weakness in our defence.

The speed Alese shows to recover on that counter attack in the second clip there is so impressive. He did something similar in the first pre-season game. If the rest of his game gets there, his recovery pace could be a real asset in the premier league.

On Cresswell, I've thought for a while that he's actually often guilty of the same mistake Masuaku makes in terms of switching off when someone runs in from the left. The way his game has dropped since the second half of last season is worrying because he's making a lot of bad decisions. If he's getting slower then he needs to be more composed about what he's doing so he doesn't get us in trouble like he did at the end of the season a few times.

Cresswell does switch off, but to judge him for that in the second pre-season game is incredibly harsh. He’s barely going to be too switched on to start with.

But it's not only in pre season really though is it?

Lukerz, it's not just pre-season. Masuaku gets judged much harder for the same mistake (which he probably makes more often).

And the thing is, I'm not saying he's done, but being switched on is exactly what he's going to need to do if he can't physically play like he used to. Being smarter about everything around in and where he's positioned is what he needs to come out of pre-season doing if we're not to end up with the same problems again. I know some people think it's a bit dramatic suddenly being down on Cresswell, and that he has bounced back after being thought of as declining a few seasons ago, but I do think last season's mistakes were really a result of panic in moments when he couldn't do the things he wanted to do.
  • Everton have been told Wolves will accept a £10m bid for Spain winger Adama Traore, 26, this summer (football insider - yeah I know)

Maybe idle gossip but at that price I want him!!

With him not being a priority at Wolves I'd like a cheap capture and to see his pace and bulldozing the opposition alongside Antonio.

I am even going to be ultra optimistic and say perhaps Moyes and co can get him to have a good end product :)

My word, that is optimistic 😂🤣😂.

However, especially in light of the 5 sub rule, he'd be great to bring on after 70 mins to provide fresh (and extremely quick) legs to relieve pressure and offer an outball when defending a lead. I can certainly see an argument for him as an option off the bench, but, for me, he would just be that; a bonus if we can afford him but it shouldn't interfere with our primary recruitment objectives.

'My first reaction was 'if pigs fly, but then I imagined the look on the oppositions' faces as Antonio gets subbed... and Traore comes on. It may be worth it just for that =)
  • 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
  • Surely shouldn’t it be new striker comes off Antonio comes on? 😉

    No, wrong way round.

TEAMtalk (I know) claim that Traore is holding out for a move to a "top-four club" so leaving Wolves for Everton is hardly the big move he seems to think he deserves.

Spurs were interested in January but he turned them down for a loan move to Barcelona

He's best playing RW rather than CF and his goal tally isn't that impressive, 11 in 154 appearances for Wolves. I'm not sure he'd be that interested in being Bowen's back up
  • Id only want Traore to see Moyes do a double sub on the 70th minute of Antonio and Traore stepping on the pitch. Defenders faces would be priceless.
  • I can see van Dijk shaking in his boots already. 😂
  • IronHerb, No I got it the right way round. Can’t keep having Antonio let lots of chances go begging. 🤔

    Yep, I misread it. 👍

I’ve never understood the Cresswell needs replacing view anyway. He was solid last season, solid the year before, in two of our most successful seasons of recent time.

Personally, when I watch Masuaku & Cresswell, it’s like chalk & cheese.

Although he ( Cresswell ) did let us down very badly in probably the 2 biggest games of last season IMO......
  • He did

    He did

So needs replacing with a faster, more reliable model

I’ll have a word with him to see if he can stretch that to a “top seven “ club.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

  • Our striker saga seems to be rumbling on with no end in sight. 552 days since He Who Shall Not Be Named was sold to Ajax, and our rumoured No1 target is now in the States with his Chelsea teammates and, weirdly, Snoop Dog, and his rumoured back-up option is reported to be undecided on whether he'd be interested in joining us.

Brereton-Diaz's name has resurfaced in recent days as a possible Plan C, whilst the links to Watford's Dennis have all but stopped.

If Tuchel wants to 'trial' Broja, and if Scamacca needs some convincing to give up waiting for PSG, we could be looking at another four or five weeks before we have that elusive second striker.

And, as an aside, what exactly is Jesse Lingard doing with his pre-season? Really struggling to believe that he's serious about his career in football.
  • Completely agree re Lingard. Everyone is back training now and he seems to be on his holidays still. Obviously up to him but he's not exactly played a ton of football in the last few years.
Broja is a tricky one. It's in Chelsea's hands so may be hard for us to do much. I wouldn't say him joining the squad makes the situation that much different than before. He's their player and if Tuchel wants to use him so Stirling etc are not forced to play 90 mins of football in a friendly that's definitely in their best interests.
I pray this doesn't drag on though.
  • Yeah, it's absolutely Chelsea's right to take him, obviously, buy I don't honestly think they want to keep him. The new Chelsea owner seems to want to collect big names and I don't think Broja will fit the look Boehly is going for.

I just hope that if it is going to roll on for another few weeks, we are looking at other positions in the meantime.

Yeah as I say he'll just be used so others don't have to play as much. Imo of course.

    Fixed it for yah =)
  • Forget Lingard, if he wanted to join, he would be here by now.
