You’d assume if Moyes was to depart we’d have someone nailed on to take it.

Well yes you would have though so. Yet when they were about to make a change from grant they made a pig’s ear of the Martin O’Neill saga and ended up with errr Grant

Then they would have known For quite some time that Sam wasn’t going to continue. And then after much procrastination they ended up appointing the only person who actually wanted the job

So whilst I am intrigued about our latest position I’m not going to hold my breath that it is going to yield a great outcome
  • So, to clarify, we want rid of a manager who:

knows the players, and by inference what positions we need to improve in

knows the club, and by inference what needs improving

who found the key to unlock the magic Marko

who appears more than capable of standing his ground against the board

whose record since he arrived is similar to managers touted as preferred replacements:

    Moyes: W 7 D 9 L 10

    Gracia: W 7 D 5 L 14

    Benitez: W 7 D 6 L 13

    Howe: W 7 D 10 L 9

This is because people have found some of his 26 games unsatisfactory.

However, if we appoint a new man, it will be important to give him time, even if things don't go well at times...
  • I'd suggest this is less to do with Moyes style of play or the fans being unhappy and more because he wanted to control transfers and wanted the board to stop leaking information to the press.
  • Grey

Personally, and I can only speak for myself, I want rid of Moyes because I find his football uninspired, I do not believe in his ability to change games, and I do not believe in his ability to bring the best out of the players - the obvious exception being Arnie.

If he stays I’ll obviously support him, but I don’t get much pleasure out of watching West Ham under him. Realistically we aren’t going to challenge for trophies, so I would rather watch a team that tries to win than a team that tries not to lose. Again, that is only my own perspective.
  • alderz

I've enjoyed a number of the games under him, and I have no real reason to think that if he stayed I would enjoy less.

It's always easy to assume that the changes we would have made would have made a positive difference, without considering the possible negative outcomes.

My feeling is that we would be a decent side to watch under him next year.
  • Mancini leaves Zenit...
  • Thats your opinion grey, and it can so easily be written the other way

Some of us think hes been pretty uninspiring with his team selection and with his subs mid game

Hes got the best out of Arnie but benched another player with 9 goals in Hermandez because hes too safe

He knows the squad (dont really get that point as its a prerequisite for any manager and cant keep a manager for that alone) but has failed to address a lot fo our problems with similar problems we had under slav and pretty poor trasnfer dealings that havent address the glaring gaps in the squad

Yes he stands up to the board but can also sound arrogant soing it, causing friction and a perception he either doesnt want to be here or we should be begging him to stay

Its easy to out people on the spot by mentioning ONLY the good or ONLY the bad

Personally I dont Moyes as manager, but im not going to riot i'd they appoint him as he has done the bare minimum

Pre and injury ravaged leicesrer with nothing to play for cant say there have been 2 or 3 highlights in 7/8 months
  • When we’ve gone for it under Moyes, I’ve teally enjoyed watching us. But there have been a fair few miserable games where we’ve conceded 3 or 4 in there, too, so I’m not convinced.

However, I do think Moyes might be a better fit for the players and the resources we currently have than a number of managers mentioned, with the exception of perhaps Rafa, who has done a good job with no money and few fair players at Newcastle.

Don't think it reasonable to judge a manager on a single January window.

My point about knowing the squad is that he is, presumably, already in a position to say which players/positions are the most important to improve on, which would speed things up in terms of identifying targets.

A new manager would, I'd imagine, have to target players without actually having had any of our lot training with him. It's not impossible, but neither is it ideal.

My feeling is that Moyes has done nothing wrong so far, and in our current situation I would opt for stability rather than gamble on another manager who may or may not do any better.
  • Just because we stayed up it doesn’t necessarily follow that the club is stable. I don’t believe it is. But by the same token I don’t beleive the reason for this is Moyes.
  • baracks

I'd agree the club lacks stability.

That'd why I'd like to see some.
  • Grey ;ok

If he stays I’m sure he is capable of turning us into a good team, but his showing so far makes me think he’ll be a defence first coach. Not knocking it, but I have long given up on us challenging for silverware, so I would rather watch a side play attractive stuff. Yes, we’ve played some decent stuff on occasion under him, in fact at times we’ve been excellent to watch. But on the whole it’s been pretty uninspired (to my eye at least).

I definitely don’t think it a given that any replacement will do better, but I am now at the point where I would like us to roll the dice. Again, if he stays I’m sure he’ll do fine.
  • This isn’t just about whether Moyes is the right option going forward, it’s about whether the combo of our manager and owners are the right option going forward. Same applies for any potential replacement. Our owners plus the Sun columnist are viewed as being toxic by fair proportion of our fan base I would say. So whomever manages us needs to deal with that element of the role on top of the other challenges of being manager.
  • Re negative football.
Some of you might remember Braunschweig. We played them in pre season a few years back and beat them by three goals, two of which were pure comedy. (Look them up on youtube if you need reminding)

Anyway. They are playing Kiel today who sit in 3rd and will be playing Wolfsburg for a place in the Bundesliga next week. Braunschweig are on a relegation place and need a win to make sure they stay up. They started positive and went a goal up after 6 minutes. They went 2-1 up after 19, just 3 minutes after conceding. So obviously they were giving it a right go.
They went into halftime 4-2 down and it could have been a lot worse!

Just goes to show that sometimes a somewhat negative approach is not the worst option.
  • Personally I don't want Moyes next season but if it's him, it's not the end of the world. What I do want is for the board to announce a decision immediately. If it is Moyes, give him a contract, tell him what his transfer budget is and let him get on with it.
  • From The Telegraph:

"But when questioned on whether or not he could now categorically state if he wants the West Ham job, Moyes said: “I can’t because I’m no further forward. We will meet and talk I think this week. We’ve not arranged a date, not arranged a time."

See, this annoys me. The board knows how important it is to get this situation resolved quickly, but if Moyes is to be believed they've not even set a date for the talks both parties have been referencing for the last six months.

    Just feels so amateurish ;angry
  • Hopefully this is not setting up for an "excuse" later on down the line...

....we wanted to wait for the new manager...

.... the world cup meant our recruitment was severely impacted...

....the new transfer window deadline hindered landing targets....

Rumours abound that *Dave Allen is all but a done deal.

    *Manuel Pellegrini
  • The Irish comedian? ;whistle
  • Goodnight and may your god go with you lol
  • As confused as most people. Think I may have been in the minority and actually welcomed Moyes`s appointment, I think he is a good manager and would turn us around. He is a good manager and has turned us around. I can also understand his conservative approach to games given that when he took us over we were in the bottom three and have dallied with relegation for most of the season. He has gone up, down,up,down and finally up in my estimations. But even though we finished on a high, three games unbeaten, and played some great football, I`m still not 100% convinced he is the right man for us. But as MIA and OCS have said above, it`s not our decision, it`s the Three Amigos decision, if he IS their man they should say so now, in fact they should have said so as soon as mathematically safe. Whoever is our manager next year they need a very decent budget, we need three or four first teamers and we need to keep our best. Good luck to who ever it is, with G,S and B in charge, they will need it. ;scarf

Oh, and thank God that seasons over. ;wahoo
  • When did Sulley tout Pellegrini or any other managers name? Is it not just press speculation?
  • Several of the players have praised Moyes approach and given him credit for how they've improved the way they work and play and some, notably Noble, have said they'd like him to stay but they won't have any say in the matter.
I just hope the Daves are not going for a so called big name so they can say that's what the fans wanted. Unless they've already got someone lined up who has agreed to join then I fear it will be another long drawn out saga where we end up with someone who is the only person willing to take us on. We then end up with the last few days of the transfer window to sign players because nobody will want to join if they don't know who the manager is going yo be.
If Moyes has drawn up a list of positions we need strengthening and potential candidates, in all probability a new manager will throw that out of the window and start looking for his own potential recruits. However we could end up getting a manager who is happy to stick with whatever has already been lined up because there's then an automatic get out with the "they were not my choices" statements trotted out.
Some of the football I saw yesterday I thought was top draw for us and if that is an indication of what we can do when we're not in a desperate situation and with a few new players then I'd be inclined to stick with him for a year or two. Nobes himself said last week we need 3 or 4 new first team players and then we'd be a really strong team.
  • Interesting. So the captain and player of the season have both publicly said they want Moyes to stay? ;hmm

Bit of pressure on the board to either comply or find someone better then.

For the reason Thorn states above, I'm actually leaning towards Moyes staying. I will be apoplectic if the board let him go and then spend weeks trying but ultimately failing to convince someone else to join.

This is such an important transfer window that we simply can't afford to jeopardise it by having neither a Director of Football, Head of Recruitment or manager in place for when it opens, IMO.
  • I've rarely, if ever, heard players openly say they don't want the manager that they work for.
  • Well there is that, Herbie.

I just want a quick resolution to this, whichever direction we go in.
  • Me too. Transfer window opens Thursday.
  • Herb, they would just say nothing then, wouldn't they.
