Thought I'd open a general cricket thread as England start their tour of Pakistan.

Stokes hasn't recovered so he misses out, we've gone with 5 batsmen, Smith at 6, and 3 quicks/seamers and the spin of Leach and Bashir.

Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat, Atkinson gets a little lucky with one down the leg side that gets glanced through to the keeper, 8-1.

  • Pakistan reach 122-1 at lunch. As it almost always is the case, especially in Pakistan, this was a very, very good toss to win.
  • Carse takes his first Test wicket, but Pakistan have advanced to 388-5.
  • One brings two, 393-6.
  • 397-6 at lunch on the second day.
  • Nearly a fantastic bit of fielding by Chris Woakes on the boundary, having caught the ball, tossed it up as he was falling over the rope, but then caught it again fractionally before his second foot left the ground to jump back over the rope. Could be a costly mis-step.
  • Pope continuing his run of incorrect reviews; since he's been filling in for Stokes, he's had 13 reviews as fielding captain, and hasn't won one yet 😂🤣😂😭😭😭.
  • Buffy your cricket report is excellent as is your apparent love of the sport. I, on the other hand, was always guaranteed to snooze off when it was on TV.
  • Pakistan's no.11 has had 2 lives already, first a missed stumping by Smith, and now a relatively simple catch dropped by Atkinson. Pakistan 553-9.
  • Those misses only cost us 6 runs in total as Pakistan are finally all out for 556. However, the last wicket was a sharp catch by Duckett, and the real cost is that he appears to have hurt his hand/thumb badly in taking the catch. Seems doubtful that he's going to open the batting now.
  • Suggestions are that Duckett might have dislocated his thumb, or possibly even broken it. Pope is opening the batting with Crawley, we could be one wicket down before we even start.
  • And we are 1 down, Pope out for a duck, 4-1.
  • 96-1 at close of play, a positive reply after the early loss of Pope. Fingers (or thumbs?) crossed that Duckett is OK to bat tomorrow given we're only playing 5 batsmen plus Smith in Stokes' absence.
  • Crawley goes early for 78 despite having looked comfortable until that point. 113-2, and Duckett comes in at 4 having been given the OK to bat despite the thumb injury yesterday.
  • Joe Root reaches 71 not out, and becomes the highest scoring English Test batsman, surpassing Alistair Cook at the top of the tree.
  • England reach 232-2 at lunch, with Duckett 80 not out and Root unbeaten on 72. A good session for England, scoring 136 runs off 25 overs for the loss of just one wicket. Still 324 runs behind Pakistan though.
  • Duckett goes for 84 not long after lunch, 249-3.
  • Root makes a ton. England 319-3.
  • 351-3 at tea, Root on 119 and Brook on 64. Another good session for England, 119 runs for the loss of one wicket.

Back to back tests on 2 strips about 20 feet apart look like being bore fests as unlikely to get results in either, especially as Brook heads the ball onto his own stumps and the bails don’t come off.
    Not exactly a bowlers’ paradise.
  • I think if England win the next toss and bat first and get a big score quickly, then it might be a different story, but you're right, taking 20 wickets isn't easy on these pitches.
  • Brook makes a ton, continuing his excellent form of his last tour of Pakistan. England are 417-3.
  • 492-3 at the close, a tremendous performance by both Root and Brook. 396 runs in the day for the loss of just 2 wickets, all in 81 overs. England have reduced the deficit to just 64 runs with 7 first innings wickets remaining.
  • Root reaches 200, surviving a scare when on 186 when he offered a relatively easy chance that was dropped. England 533-3, with Brook on 157. Only 23 behind.
  • Scores level. England reach parity for the loss of just 3 wickets. 556-3.
  • Harry Brook reaches 200, his highest first class score. Root is 247, England are 628-3, a lead of 72.

Root reaches 252, closing in on his highest Test score of 254, also against Pakistan.

Edit: now on 255, his new highest score in a Test match.

658-3 at lunch, Root and Brook on 259 and 218 respectively, with an unbeaten stand of 409, only 2 runs shy of equaling England's highest stand in a Test match. The lead is 102.

The stand moves to 414, so another record goes; it's the highest ever stand by England in a Test match. It looks like England are looking to accelerate the already good scoring rate, presumably with a declaration in mind.

The score of 676 is the highest score by a visiting team to Pakistan.
  • Root finally goes for 262, trapped plumb lbw. England are 703-4, with Brook, who has really accelerated since lunch, on 260.
  • Now Smith, who is intent on scoring quickly, gets a life as Pakistan drop a sitter. England are 742-4, a lead of 186. It's all about time in the game though, I suspect England will declare at 10.10-10.20 to give our bowlers 20-30 minutes at the Pakistan openers before tea.
