  • I see people moaning about a rumoured £38m buyback clause for Borges and not being worth it. Obviously, you'd ideally want to control what you sell him for if he plays really well but it would be one of our best profits on sales in recent times (maybe ever, not counting Rice?) and if he plays well enough for City to want him back then surely it's better to have him for a while than not have him because we turned down their condition? Football Twitter can be so stupid.

Also, Man City would be very unlikely to buy him back unless he’s become - or looks like becoming - one of the best players in the world. It’s a very high bar to be a Man City player these days. So even if he’s amazing for us, it doesn’t mean City will think it’s worthwhile.
  • Yep. They supposedly have a similar clause on Lavia that they're apparently not activating despite others being after him for a higher sum.

  • Interesting
  • Amateur club

They have but that doesn't kick in until next year.
  • Of all the none too clever things for West Ham to do, further reducing our midfield options right now is up there, IMO.

Hope the lad does well, though.

Although he's shown promise in the pre-season matches, he's nowhere near PL level, and our group stage European fixtures are likely to be tougher than last season's were. Getting regular game time in men's football makes sense to me, so I've no issue with this as long as the club is confident he'll not spend all season on Wycombe's bench.
  • I've no issue with the loan in itself; it will hopefully do the lad a world of good.

I guess the timing, from our own point of view, is a bit off, IMO. I'd have liked to have seen people come in before we let more players go.

Downes, Soucek, Paqueta and Fornals are our midfield options going into Rennes, Leverkusen and possibly Bournemouth and Chelsea. Feels too light, for me.

I agree we're very light in midfield, but I really can't see Moyes using Potts in any meaningful game just yet.

    And Conor Coventry...

Coventry surely gets sold, he has no future with us imo.

    You're forgetting Vlasic. 😂

I did, to be honest. But I don't think he'll be far behind Potts in leaving the club, be it on a permanent deal or a loan.

Hey, if it's good enough for Moyes... 😄
  • He says we haven’t said what an acceptable price is, but we did have a price agreed as part of the loan deal, and they’re trying to save a few million. Honestly, him saying he’s being a professional and training hard is, IMO, completely undermined by statements like that.
  • So we've waited 7 weeks to bid £20m for JWP and £20m for Maguire?

What was stopping us making those bids on the 1st July?

Genuinely don't understand our strategy sometimes.
  • Embarrassing. Just seems completely all over the place. Reeks of phantom bids imo.
  • So we’ve bid £20m for Maguire, but The Athletic report that is likely to be the end of it as the signs from Maguire are that he wants to fight for his place & the salary is an issue. Man Utd want £30m.

    Hope so

Cheapskates. If you want him, just pay the asking price.

We can't afford slabheads wages anyway so what's the point

It was reported quite some time ago that Man Utd are going to give Maguire a payoff against his future wages so he's not much out of pocket if he accepts a lower wage by signing elsewhere.
  • They agreed to the price this time last year. That's the price, so if they want him then just pay it.

If Maguire is a major signing this summer, I’d question our ambition. We shouldn’t be signing cast offs from any of the “big six” IMO. I’m not even sure it would be an improvement on what we already have - actually, I am sure he wouldn’t be an improvement! I’d hate to see our £105m spent on his wages, rather than on improving the squad.

I agree, I really don't want Maguire, he's old, slow and error-prone, and won't be cheap either. The biggest of big "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"s from me.

He'd be over the moon if he arrived this summer.
