I don't see how we can compare this year to last. Our best player has gone and we have a huge gapping hole in the middle of our team. For me it's more of a risk to dilly-dally with regards to that position.
I would argue that we have two gapping holes in midfield... unless soucek can get his form back and learn how to pass the ball.
Yup, a replacement for Rice and an upgrade on Soucek is what I think we need.
I like Soucek, but the bottom line is he isn't very good with the ball at his feet. His passing range is very limited and he's very vulnerable to a high press, IMO.
OCS. I would be unhappy and very surprised if we did not bring in at least one quality midfield replacement for Rice. I imagine we have got a couple of good options lined up ready to go but have not pressed the button yet as there is at least one that we really want that is proving difficult, but still possible, so we are holding off a bit longer. I have confidence that the people that have their money in this, the shareholders followed by the board and Moyes and Steidten all know what has to be done and are working hard to achieve that.
Surely you have a priority target or two which you try to get in early and others are progressed throughout the window. Other clubs seem to do a lot of ground work before the end of the season and hence make some early signings. The transfer window always seems to come as a surprise to us.
I'm still not that worried about the window, tbh. We've signed players late in windows who have settled immediately, we've signed players late in windows who haven't. We've signed players early in windows who have hit the ground running, and we've signed players early who have been rubbish.
Would I rather we signed everyone we needed nice and early? Yes. But what I would like more is to make sure we sign players that actually improve us. There's no point going early and signing more Gokhan Tore's and Havard Nordtveit's, IMO.
Lukerz posted the current squad yesterday. IMO, if we go into the Bournemouth game with that squad, that's fine. If we go into the Luton game with it, we'll have a tricky season.
I'm usually happy to be patient and not get all worked up at this stage, but it is crazy to me that we didn't have a Rice replacement lined up and even agreed before we let him go.
We could have made Rice and Arsenal wait until our replacement was all agreed. Feel like plenty of other clubs do that sort of thing.
Who knows what is going on behind the scenes, only a handful of people.
This is true and is usually my position, but don’t you feel that these days news of transfers breaks quite a while before a signing is actually confirmed?
If we were close to signing somebody I feel like we’d know it. Maybe I’m wrong, but I can’t recall the last time a signing was announced completely out of the blue.

Downes, I think. Don't remember reading anything about us being interested in him at all.
He'd had a medical and done media work with Palace when we gazumped them at the last minute.
But generally speaking there's always some noise. More often than not it's people like Ex and Romano saying that a bid has been accepted, then a few days later that the medical is booked, then the old emoji nonsense and then it's formally announced.
I'd be amazed if we made any signings this summer that didn't follow that pattern. And that we haven't seen any of that makes me think we're not close to anyone, Borges aside.

Again, though, this is a speculation thread. Where people speculate. Which is to form theories and opinions despite on no firm evidence. So, sure, nobody knows anything, but that's sort of the point of this thread.

Fancy a beer mate?
I’ve been banging my head against that particular wall for a while now.
As I'm sure others have in explaining that this is a thread where people speculate and debate.
We do have a 'done and dusted' option where factual deals are discussed. But as yet there's been no cause to use it so all we have is rumour and conjecture to discuss.
Moyes/ the club has identified one of the issues to the terrible league form last season as recruiting late yet nothing has been done about it this season. This imo is the biggest window in the clubs history in recent seasons in losing their best player and how to reinvest. How nothing is lined up or even close baffles me. And on this note, why In trust this summer of transition to Moyes if he only has one season left and will be gone. 🤷♂️
I do get that, Rav, but I would challenge the idea that he's only got one year left. If this year goes well, we won't change manager next summer, IMO.
And, even if he is to go next summer, the whole point of bringing in Tim Steidten is to build a longer term recruitment strategy, so it's not just about Moyes.
How about this for speculation, we have got Alvarez and perhaps one other lined up but have held back in the hope of Gallagher or even Palhinha still being possible.
Palhinha looks like he could be out for a few months after possibly dislocating his shoulder last night. I think even if he was still on the list, he won't be now.

Possible. Very possible.
But, Fulham appear to have been very consistent with their valuation of Palhinha and we appear to have been consistent with our undercooked offers. I'd have thought that the message was quite clear weeks ago that they weren't going to let him go for the £40-45m that we were offering. So it feels like a massive waste of time.
The Alvarez thing could be true. He's on holiday at the moment so any deal may be waiting for when he's back. But as Jorderz says, if this was the case I'd expect one of the usual suspects to be talking about it.
But I'd be interested to see how his numbers compare to Fornals (cheers in advance, alderz). They seem to be quite similar in styles from what I've seen of Gallagher.
West Ham United are reportedly closing in on a transfer deal for AC Milan striker Divock Origi. The Belgian forward has flopped at the San Siro since his move from Liverpool a year ago, but he still enjoys cult hero status among the fans at Anfield. Origi won the Premier League and Champions League in his time as a Liverpool player, developing a knack for scoring some important goals in big games such as those famous games against Barcelona and Tottenham in 2019. Origi could now be heading back to England, with Gazzetta dello Sport claiming a deal with West Ham is close. The Hammers need more quality in attack and Origi looks a good and realistic option for them this summer.
But I'd be interested to see how his numbers compare to Fornals (cheers in advance, alderz). They seem to be quite similar in styles from what I've seen of Gallagher.
This link will show you Gallagher and Fornals stats for the past two seasons.
Highlights for me: - Gallagher makes more passes, but his passes aren't as progressive, with far more short passes - Fornals creates more shots and more goals. - Defensively, Gallagher makes a lot more tackles (2.57 per 90 last year, with Fornals just 1.54) - Gallagher runs at players more than Fornals, and last season he carried the ball a lot for Chelsea - he did that a lot less at Palace. - Despite playing in a less advanced role than Fornals, last season Gallagher received a lot more progressive passes than Fornals per 90, which suggests he gets high up the pitch
My feeling, generally, is that it's tricky to compare as Fornals has spent his career with us playing wide left, and Gallagher is a box to box midfielder. I personally think that Fornals would really suit the role of a #8, but he hasn't actually done it for us yet.
Cheers alderz. I agree about Fornals; he's looked good so far playing centrally in pre-season, but once Paqueta is fit and if we sign Gallagher, I'm not sure that Fornals will play there much.
But with four competitions and, hopefully, 50+ games next season, he could get enough minutes to keep him happy.
Now that Paquetá, Cornet, Scamacca, Aguerd, Kehrer, Emerson and Downes have been fully integrated into the team and are all fit -to all intents and purposes-, I'm looking forward to seeing Mayes' vision take shape on the pitch. I'd be happy enough with the addition of Origi -and maybe Gallagher- to this.
I think Gallagher alongside a pure DM would be decent business and fit the idea of Rice needing to be replaced by two players who combined have his qualities.

Gallagher apparently been told he's surplus to requirements at Chelsea.
Moyes is said to have been an admirer for a while. Let's see if this one goes anywhere.
It's absolutely insane
