David Moyes on Paqueta: “I’ve lost count of how many players we've bid for. We've bid for a lot. If I told you who, you would burst out laughing”. 🚨⚒️ @RoshaneSport #WHUFC

Moyes also confirms: “We've made an improved bid for Vanaken”. €11m plus add-ons was rejected yesterday.

Moyes was talking quite openly about Paqueta and what he brings. Unusual for him. Does that suggest he's confident that the deal gets done, or talking freely because he believes there's no chance of it happening?

Paqueta and Vanaken would be, what, £45m between them? That would be a £150m+ transfer window.
  • There’s going to be a lot of players to keep happy

Moyes could ask Pep how he does it. ;)

My theory also is that the new investor’s money couldn’t be released in January because he’s so linked to the energy sector. Things are not as unpredictable as they were then. That might be helping, whether his money is directly funding transfers or helping to release money that might’ve been needed elsewhere.

    Or sell.

If, and it's a huge if, we got Paqueta and Vanaken, I can see Lanzini being moved on. Coventry will almost certainly be loaned. Downes too, potentially.

I was interested in this, so took a look at our net spend according to Transfermarkt. Over the past 10 years, our net spend per season has been £42.39m. Currently, this season stands at £109.13, which is our highest ever.

If you look at net spend the past 5 seasons before this, it was -£11m, £78.42m, £57.89m, £8.36m and £63.24m.

2020/21 was low, but otherwise the average the past few years was about £60m odd. I think us having spend £109m suggests we've already caught up?
  • Paqueta is a next level signing. in my books its the kind of Marquee signing you want alongside the likes of your Cornets to bolster squad options whilst adding additional quality. I really hope we can drive this one over the line it would be huge for our midfield to get someone like him in.
  • I'm sure he won't cost a Paqueta

    🤭
  • What find a bit odd is that Moyes was after Phillips in January and Onana this summer -
both primarily defensive midfielders - but we don't appear to be linked with anyone of that ilk at the moment. Both Vanaken and Paqueta are attacking midfielders, and Gallagher is more box-to-box 🤔
  • I have this nagging feeling that given all the money spent, we may make a big sale once everyone is in to cover it. Hope I am wrong though.

I don't think the sale of Dawson will quite cover the spend, mind it'll be close. ☺️ ⚒

    Rice moved to specialist DM
Would be a good move imo as his G/A is low
  • Is Onana really a defensive midfielder? He looks more box to box to me.
  • Interesting comment by Moyes in that he would never try to persuade a player to join us. If they don’t want to come he doesn’t want them.
Maybe why some of the players we are linked with and bid for eg Onana, Nunez end up elsewhere.
  • thorn, The story I heard was Onana wanted a virtual guarantee that he would be playing every week to protect his World Cup chances which DM wouldn't give him. Nunez we allegedly didn't offer what Benfica wanted? A lot of the top players won't entertain joining us as we aren't in the Champions League let alone not being able to pay the massive fees their clubs demand plus their salaries.

Exactly the point. Moyes wouldn’t waste time trying to persuade them to join if they initially weren’t interested
  • West Ham have had a 50m euro (£42.2m) bid for 24-year-old Brazil midfielder Lucas Paqueta rejected by Lyon. (L'Equipe, via Metro)

Arsenal are not expected to move for Paqueta despite reports they were interested. (Express)

West Ham have been offered the chance to sign Arsenal and England midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles, 24, in the closing weeks of the transfer window. (Mail)

Southampton and Bournemouth are also discussing a possible deal for Maitland-Niles, with Arsenal potentially open to a loan move with an option to buy. (TalkSport)
  • Maitland-Niles would be a good signing, but the tease of Paqueta would make him feel underwhelming
  • Arne Engles (yeah, me too) now linked. 18-year-old Belgian youth international. Right-sided player entering the final year of his contract with Club NXT, and on the books of Wasserman.

If true, could be another hint that Moyes is looking to play 3-5-2 in the long term.
  • If 50M euros isnt enough for Paqueta then I'm more than fine with that. For that sort of money I believe there are plenty of other players out there we could try for (and no, I'm not naming any... Ok I'll name Eze. I'd also rather chuck stupid money at someone like Maddison

    One for the Academy methinks.
  • Seems bizarre no one has tried seriously for Tielemans so far

He's into his last 12 months, all reports suggest he has no intention of renewing and Leicester would be happy to sell for a cut-price of around £20mil

25 years old, prem experience, Leicester 20/21 player of the season

Just seems odd as on paper he seems a really good player

He will have his pick of clubs next summer. If he has his mind set on Arsenal, they might be prepared to wait until next summer to get him for nothing, or may throw in a £15m bid next Wednesday that Leicester will either have to accept or lose him for nothing (in which case Arsenal may get him anyway).

I would imagine he's had plenty of suitors, but is in a position to sit tight for a year and wait for the club of his choice.

    Probably.

Coufal, Johnson, Ashby for a couple of seasons. Maybe Johnson, Ashby, Engles a few years down the line.
  • Right then. Paqueta. Will he sign or not? Didn't we used to have the option to add a poll on here at one time?

Seems to be a level of confidence on social media that it'll happen, which is a bit disconcerting. Instinctively I feel like it won't; I have a feeling that we'll be gazumped by one of the CL/EL league teams and we'll settle for Vanaken instead.

    What do you reckon?

I don't think it will happen. Well probably end up with the lad from Brugge.
  • I reckon they should offer two pints of lager and a paqueta crisps. That should do it =)
  • Don't think we'll get him
  • It’s a no from me
