I don’t think our CL ship was ever really in our port. The season we just missed out was because for us we out performed and the normal CL teams underperformed nearly all pretty well at the same time. Can’t see that happening again but no reason why we shouldn’t regularly get into top 6 if we do our business right.

But that's kind of the point; if we do our business right. Personally, I think we've got it very wrong over the last two windows which is why we're having to play catch up now. Even if we get this one right, and what we've done so far is good, we may struggle to get all of the players integrated quickly enough to maintain a top six push.
  • The fact we were even in with a chance of CL over the last 2 years is pretty amazing seeing at the year before we were fighting relegation. I think we progressed rapidly and expectations have gone up but we are now in a position where getting players of the right quality is more difficult as we have to be better than what we have and we are competing with teams who either have a higher level of european football or can offer more money. We also have an ageing squad I think it will take a few windows to get the squad Moyes wants.
  • West Ham hold talks with PSG over Kehrer
West Ham have held initial talks with PSG over the signing of defender Thilo Kehrer.
Kehrer is a German international who can play at centre-back and full-back.
Sevilla are also interested and they can offer Champions League football.
West Ham looking to bring in a central defender before Sunday’s game at Nottingham Forest.
New signing Nayef Aguerd is injured and Issa Diop is close to joining Fulham
  • Blimey, we lost £4m in less than an hour.

This inspires some anxiety and trauma from my recent trip to Reno casinos! O.o
  • Thilo Kehrer only got 22 starts last season, 5th choice CB at PSG

I think he's going to want to know he's going to get game time if he comes here

Before everyone starts thinking he's an alternative LB starter he's only played there once since he joined PSG in 2018 and that was for 23 minutes
  • Sarr has scored from his own half. Watford will do well to keep him and Dennis.
  • ASLEF, Have you advised DM & RN of this fact? =)

Then missed from 12 yards. 😂

  • Simon Phillips tells Givemesport

"With Ross Barkley, he’s got a lot of other clubs interested in him at the moment so it’s not just Everton. He’s got Brighton, Newcastle, West Ham and Aston Villa and Celtic. So got plenty of options to go to."

    So, Celtic it is!

I really don't see what he's got to offer at the top level any more, seems to me he peaked at about 20 and it's been all downhill from there.
  • Not sure I understand these Thilo Kehrer links. The Szalai/Diallo links I get because they're both left-sided CBs and this is where our biggest issue is (Aguerd out for months and Og not yet match fit), but Kehrer is predominantly right-sided.

I can see him as a Dawson replacement, but that arguably isn't the priority. We have Daws and Zouma to play on the right, but no-one to play on the left.

Unless we're definitely looking to play a back three and we want five good options there (Zouma, Dawson, Kehrer, Szalai and Aguerd).

Kehler either plays Centre or Left for PSG

Eric Bailly is getting mentioned aswell be Ex
  • But the key for me is he's right footed (and has been used as a right back) so we'll lose that natural balance if he's played on the left.

Moyes is on record as saying he wanted Aguerd to give the defence more balance. Seems counterintuitive to me to bring in another right-footer to play on the left.

Obviously there are levels, but two of the best left sided centre backs we’ve seen in the Premier League ever are John Terry and Nemanja Vidic - both right footed. Then you’ve got the likes of Tony Adams, Raphael Varane, Gerard Pique, Winston Reid. All players who are right footed but predominantly played on the left.

I don’t think being right footed necessarily means you can’t be a good left sided CB. Idk if Kehrer is that, but it seems like he is capable of, and used to, playing there.

Maybe Kehrer is just thought of as a better player?

He hasn't nailed down his spot at PSG (no easy feat) but they spent £33mil on him as he was a top prospect in the bundesliga

He's also got caps for Germany, he's played at a high level and has experience despite his relative young age

Quickly look up Szalai he only moved to Fenebache in 2020 for a fee of €2mil, previously he had moved around a lot between the Hungarian and Cypriot leagues

On paper, Kehrer is clear and while right footed he has shown (from his appearances at top clubs) that he can actually play on the left

Tbf I haven't seen either play so I trust the scouting team....but Kehrer makes sense even if he's not naturally left footed
  • Looking at Kehrer, he is a ball playing CB through and through. Compared to other Top 5 league CBs, his passing stats are wild. Not much progressive passing, but that’s fine, he keeps the ball well and he gives it to people who do progress it.

He also seems to like bringing the ball out of defence, as you can see from his possession stats.

Defensively, his figures are pretty low in comparison to other players. But that’s a tricky one, because PSG are among the most dominant league sides in the world, so he’s probably not getting masses of opportunities to defend.

  • Let’s just dispel the myth about squad numbers in relation to our transfer business & the first team. We are currently as we were last season (4 first team players out, 4 in):

    2021/22 stats
    Ryan Fredericks 15 appearances
    Arthur Masuaku 24 appearances
    Mark Noble 23 appearances
    Andriy Yarmolenko 34 appearances

    Average per player 24

    2021/22 stats
Nayef Aguerd 40 matches last season
Flynn Downes 39 matches last season
Gianluca Scamacca 38 matches last season
Maxwel Cornet 29 matches last season

    Average per player 36.5

As you can see, the players we have signed average a considerable amount of game time each, over 12 appearances more than the average for the players we have let go.

Anybody considering David Martin as a first team player is wrong. The guy put out the cones in training & filled the sticks in practise matches.

Don't forget that first teamer we lost, Nathan Holland

  • I think everyone apart from Fabrizio Romano knew the Kostic deal was off the moment we signed Cornet

Diop was gone the moment Moyes said he had asked not to be included in Sunday's squad. Good luck to the lad (barring October and April)
  • Lukerz, good statting 😁 but based on that we haven’t actually increased the number of players that DM can call upon unless we are including a few from the Academy?
  • This is really gonna grind Alderz gears
  • Szalai looked good when Hungary played England recently. I'd be happy with him.
  • Left footed CB who occasionally plays LB, joined Fenerbahce in Jan 2021 from Apollon Limassol for approx. £2m, 34 starts last season

It's tempting to have a player named Attila but...

    But, but, but , but………….

  • Must say I'm envious of Everton for getting Tarkowski and Coady for the grand total of £0.00p. That's brilliant business.

Based on one pretty meaningless international?😳

  • Slacker, but What?

Szalai actually got good reviews at the last Euro's. Maybe we can't get Kehrer from PSG?
