“In my mind he is arguably the best holding midfield player in the country and the best thing about Declan is he will get better. Declan is carrying a lot of the team at the moment and he’s the one who will carry on from Mark Noble when it comes to an end for him. Quite often when building a club you have to sell. I hope it’s not the case with Declan but I said the same with Wayne Rooney and Joleon Lescott [at Everton]. But the team got better because we were able to sign the right players to replace them. If that ever came around [Rice leaving] I’d hope we’d be able to do the same here as well.”
So I don’t know why he would be so upset by Diang’s sale.
Because Rice money would allow him to build while Diangana doesn’t so much, while losing a player that he’d be seeking to build with?
But I don’t believe he is walking and not on that alone.
I’m not jealous about Everton buying James Rodriguez. That World Cup was one of the most impressive I’ve ever seen but he’s a long way off that now. He’s the type of player I don’t want to see us splashing on anymore - or not until we’re making more important deals first. He’ll probably be amazing now.
On one hand they've brought in two players who could be massive upgrades on what they have an both have top level ability
Or you can see how they have spent just under £50mil on two 29 year olds players who have never played in the league and in James case, has barely played any football over the last 3 years (5 appearances last year I heard). Plus both are likely to be on or around the £100k p/w mark with little sell on value
Brentford agree a £28mil (+5mil add ons) bid from Villa for Watkins
That is an absurd amount of money
We signed Bowen who is younger (and who likely would have pipped watkins to player of the season if he stayed all year) for £20mil......in January......before the pandemic
Sure he's a good player, but the last two seasons before this he got 10 goals in both
Was he playing as a striker before last season? I thought he was converted to that position. He looks a different player to Bowen, more like Antonio as a striker.
Just wants to be in the PL? And he was a winger under Smith - that doesn't mean he wasn't doing much, just not scoring the goals his position now allows him to.
It's also Brentford's model. Watkins and Benrahma were always going to be sold so they could buy in the next players who somehow manage to improve them every year.
baracks, unlike our owners who haven't opened the biscuit tin for DM......yet! Everton trying to get Tomori on loan from Chelsea, we appear to be going around in a daze not realising that the season starts on Saturday.
only another 27 more days or whatever is left of this window to watch Phil Jones rock up on 80k a week and no doubt some past it striker with our two left backs of the last few years still there still getting torn down the left side week in week out.
A lot "pundits" really rate Watkins so it looks a good piece of business from where I am sitting especially if it helps Aston Villa stay up as we appear to be selling and not buying anyone not even a decent player on loan.

However, Burnley want £50m if they are to part with the England international. (Sky Sports)
I notice Coventry, Holland and Baptiste aren't listed. Surprising as they've been somewhat hyped by the club.

Risky move imo

Villa’s owners must have a lot of faith in him to open the chequebook wide once again
Ridiculous.
Green Street Hammers say we've paid off the €14m we owed for Haller, which happens to be about £12m.
Depressing...
Watkins is a striker so there's always a premium to pay.
The 20% sell on clause was added at the last minute but no idea if it was part of the final deal
