I think we may need to pay his contract up. We won’t get a fee for him and I doubt anyone will want him on a free transfer either on his existing wage

We could loan him out (recoup a bit of wages), let him recover his confidence elsewhere (he hasn't always been rubbish) and sell in the summer.

If the confidence thing doesn't materialise, we could cancel his contract (by mutual consent maybe) in the summer and ship him out then (after recouping a bit of wages through loan).

Yes, but I think Martin has proven that he's a capable No2. As I say, unless Fab is still carrying an injury, I think we could get by with Fab, Martin and Anang in an emergency until the summer, rather than spend a significant chunk of our reported budget on a position that isn't necessarily a priority.

But if this move doesn't impact on our ability to strengthen in other areas, then it's all good.

I liked Randolph when he was here, but I have to question why he’d leave us to get first team football, get it, and then come back to be a sub?

Well if his best years were still ahead of him, we wouldn't be talking 8M for him... I think he'd do well for us. For that money, a player with his craft, steel and experience plus capacity to both defend and create attacks would be good alongside Rice.

Any decent established all round midfielder costs a bomb these days. He's only 29 and still does well internationally too. Outside of something along his lines we'd have to unearth someone relatively unknown or pay top dollar for the Doucoures and Gueyes of this world.

This is the guy who ran things for an excellent footballing Swansea side and got a big move to Liverpool because of it. Again, hes 29 so he's not exactly past it. At the end of the day, if Liverpool paid a shed load for him, that's good enough for me :whistle:

Need players like Allen that can hit the ground running. It’s going to be a tough job getting clear of relegation this year. Randolph seems like he’s a nice fella to have around, had some great games also last time around. Would be a great double swoop in my mind.

So Joe Allen and Darren Randolph as our two squad boosters potentially from this window, neither a game changer so Moyes will need to keep momentum going to the end of the campaign.

I would argue that Allen has the potential to be a game changer for us. He is capable of playing as a holding midfielder, a central midfielder, and off the striker. He gives us the option to change our central midfield without massively diminishing the quality of the side.

I know what you mean in that he's not going to come on and scare a defence, but I think he enables us to manage the squad, rotate, and move out players who are out of form.

If it's Allen and Sander Berge, for example, then I'm ok with him coming in. In our situation, it wouldn't be a bad thing to have an experienced Wilshere/Noble alternative in the pool of midfield options, but we need some more strength and steel in the middle of the park.

Hamstew, I agree that 40pts is usually about the cut off point that determines
survival or relegation, but not always, and if we carry on playing like we are
at the moment, we will be dragged into a relegation fight for survival.

Sander Berge is the type of signing that could really be a coup and a hidden gem, or it could be a player from a minor league (all due respect) that doesnt make the step up

Personally I'd be all for it, fits the mould of progressive signings mid table clubs need to make but I'd be well surprised if his value isnt closer to £20mil than the £10m we apparently bid

Think it's more of a summer move for us to go for, although more parties will be interested I'm sure

I wondered about this, so I took a look into it.

Since January 2010, we have signed 29 players in the winter transfer window. This is at an average of of £1.6m per head. Our top five most expensive January signings last decade were:

£10.8m - Robert Snodgrass - 2017
£9.18m - Jordan Hugill - 2018
£8.28m - Jose Fonte - 2017
£4.32m - Sam Byram - 2015
£2.61m - Gary O'Neil - 2011

Only a further 4 signings cost more than £1m.

In the past four winter windows we have made more money than we have spent.

2018/19 - £450k profit
2017/18 - £24.27m profit
2016/17 - £7.29m profit
2015/16 - £730k profit
2014/15 - £1.71m loss
2013/14 - £630k loss
2012/13 - £270k loss
2011/12 - £3.04m loss
2010/11 - £2.99m loss
2009/10 - £2.34m loss

My interpretation of all of this is that the club invest in the summer, and don't tend to keep a pot back for a rainy day (January). Even when we have recouped money - 2017/18 and 2016/17 - we haven't invested it.

2017/18 is particularly interested as it was Moyes' window with us. Ayew, Sakho & Fonte went out for a combined £34.53m. We brought in Hugill for £9.18m, Evra on a free, and spent £1.08m on Joao Mario's loan.
