Fortune, seems like a negotiating tactic, leaking "other interest" to put more pressure on us. If chelsea wanted him so badly they would've just swooped in and paid what they want as they have the money; just like they did with Batshuayi when WHU and palace were negotiating for him. Also they have Kante, Bakayoko and Luiz to play that (specialised) position so I would be very surprised if he turned up at chelsea ( other than playing for us against them ;lol )
There are so many things which create a sometimes quite complex picture regarding every transfer, with regard Calvalho;
Do they want to sell or only accepting they have to if release met? Has Champions league qualification changed their picture? would they like keep him to be stronger and need money less? or happy to sell now that goal is secured? Does he want to come or is he stalling to see if others with higher profile come in? bear in mind he looks at the premiership table and sees us rooted to the bottom, he likely would imagine he could better if worth 40m.
All of these things and likely a few more create a more complex picture than gets reported and only the parties involved are aware of.
If I put on my everything is as it looks head I think the Club recognise that if we are to progress in the most ultra competitive league in the world we need be paying this much for players and will do all possible to push it over the line. Where as if I put my cynical head on I fear our owners always like a bigger name than they seriously expect to get to create an impression of them being bigger league than they are.
I am open to be convinced either way. I hope we get him as he is quality, but I have also enjoyed seeing Rice play and think he has a very big future and so should we not it can only mean more opportunities for him.
I think that's all wingers are in the modern game, though. Nobody plays a 4-4-2 with genuine wide players hugging the touchline. Antonio and Arnie are typical of what you find now, IMO.
Slav had said that if anyone else leaves we will have to replace them so it could be interesting. How many of our summer 16 and January 17 signings are still with us.
Didn't Arsenal trigger the Suarez release fee and that didn't happen. Barca have been chasing Coutinho for a month. So we're not alone in long drawn out transfers. Why are we so happy to put ourselves down?
According to SSN a senior club official has said €40M is too expensive and he hasn't trained for weeks so probably couldn't play for at least 4-6 weeks. Surely they've known this all along.
The more I have read about this bloke he is more of a deep lying creative midfielder rather than a defensive midfielder his stats show he made considerably less tackles than obiang . I don't think as a club we can afford to make a mistake with 30mil plus . I was quite looking forward to signing him but the longer it's gone on and the not training part so he gets his move (alledgely) makes me think maybe this might turn out to be a blessing
With Snodgrass joining Aston Villa on loan, almost all of the last year's recruits have been shown the door. Surely, there should be an inquest. How did WHU get their recruitment so wrong? Who scouted the players? How persuasive was their evidence? How much money has been wasted? How did the recruitment of dross affect the morale of other players? What changes have been made to avoid repetition of the same?

Out of the permanent signings last season we've still got Ayew, Masuaku, Fernandes, Fonte and technically Lanzini as he was on loan the previous season

I think the board and Slav have boxed themselves in now. the formations are going to be very rigid or back to square pegs in round holes again.

Only Ayew and Masuka I think?? When did we sign Fernandez?

;ccole
I reserve the right to comment later as I will be castigated for what I might say at the current moment if it's true.
Maybe we are bluffing?
Not all bad.
