We're back in the Scott Parker situation where he didn't want to move outside the M25 because he didn't want to move his kids or David Unsworth whose Mrs wanted to go back up the M1 so she could be nearer to her Mum.
Its worth noting that Payet's oldest Noa is 7 so he'd be starting junior school, there are French schools in London but not many over this side, they seem to congregate around the West End and South West London for some reason.
I don't buy this family excuse. Maybe his family are a bit unhappy, but that's not the reason this has happened, imo.
If it was, there are many ways to resolve it which don't mean saying 'I don't want to play for West Ham any more'.
I know we only have one side of the story as yet, but clearly Slav hasn't just made that story up. If he had, Dimi would have contradicted it by now.
Of course, the 'unhappy family' line does leave open a door for him to come back. (Saving a bit of face.) A return could be spun which emphasises that aspect, blames a bit on things getting lost in translation etc. Not that I'm saying that's likely to happen.
Sometimes in life u don't always get what u want. If he's to be sold then it's to the highest bidder IMO , if Payet only wants a rerun to his former club, then he must make the rest up if their bid is lower than another teams.. Otherwise let's see what toys he throws out the pram then..
If he'd said "my family want to return to France, so that's what we'll look to do. In the meantime I'll give everything for the cause. I love the fans and the club, but my family come first", I don't think anyone would hold it against him.
Mrs G - West Ham have confirmed they turned down £20m from Marseille (plus £2.5m if they qualify for the CL) in the last few days so I'd guess that is what has sparked all this.
It wouldn't be beyond what is humanly possible for his family to move back and for him to stay in London for 6 months, and agree with the club a gentleman's agreement (as is being suggested has happened anyway) to permit him to leave in the summer.
Just listening to the Moose on Talksport, apparently when Payet won player of the year he told Bilic he was like a father to him....
If it is the family being unsettled then fair enough but play to the summer, dont sign a massive new contract and then a few months later refuse to play.
Attitude and Commitment, I wish with give him a transfusion from Collins...
I'm now of the opinion that the best thing to do would be to get Payet out of the club asap, take the £20m and spend £15m on Depay. He's only on £90k pw so we're £5m and £30k pw better off plus he's 7 years younger with his whole career ahead of him.
We can get more than 20m for him even if he rots in the reserves till Summer. I see no point to hand him over to a rival that cheaply or let him get away with Contract Blackmail.
YeOld - we've never actually played Marseille, in fact I don't think we've ever played in the same European competition in the same season so I'm not sure they count as a rival.
The closest we came was last season where they entered the Europa League in the group stage and we could have been drawn against them had we got that far.
Some more developments in the Dimitri Payet story from Sky sources... •Payet is refusing to play for West Ham because he wants to move back to Marseille.
•His agent will hold talks with West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan today.
•Payet hasn't trained this week because he says he has a back injury.
•West Ham paid Payet a £1m loyalty bonus in September.
•Payet told Slaven Bilic he did not want to play in the FA Cup game against Manchester City last Friday.
•West Ham did not receive a single bid for Payet last summer.
I think all this wanting to return to France for family reasons is tosh. Wasn't Payet creeping around Arsene wenger a few weeks ago. Correct me if I'm wrong. ;biggrin
OCS, they would have had reasons for saying it. They could have kept quiet but chose not to. Whilst we can only speculate as to their chosen reasons, I would imagine that is one of them, another is that they wanted other clubs to be aware of the sale, to enforce a bidding war. Even if he'll only got to Marseille, it doesn't mean we can't get the price pushed up.
If you read Matin Samuels article in the Mail, and believe him, then Bilic unloaded on Payet without the knowledge of the West Ham media team who were present at the presser. Billie was angry and hurt, which was pretty obvious.
I've kept quiet since seeing the news yesterday. Taking in all of the comments, here, twitter, pundits, everywhere else.
I'm gutted to be honest. I feel a bit like Slav sounded in the interview. Disheartened and angry. I've a lot of sympathy for the players right now, especially those who had built strong bonds with him like Noble and Lanzini. It can't be used as an excuse going forwards, as easy as it would be to accept it, they all need to be professional and get on with it, but it's going to be tough and it'll hurt.
Betrayal, from the thread title, certainly feels like the most apt word.
I've been hesitating to comment or vent, because I wanted to see if Payet's corner gave a rebuttal, but they haven't. For me, that's confirmation enough that what Slav has said is true.
I wouldn't boo him, but thousands will, so he will never play for us again. Keep taking bids until the final day of the window. Accept the highest and be done with it imo.

He could therefore easily move back to France and he could still get into training in less time than someone coming in from Canvey Island
;lol

Gosh, am I fickle or what?
I'm coming round to that point of view tbh. It would be nice to just draw a line under the whole thing and completely cut ties with him.
The closest we came was last season where they entered the Europa League in the group stage and we could have been drawn against them had we got that far.
Send him back to France he can go back into obscurity where we found him.

If we categorically weren’t selling him then I see no value in having a meeting with Marseille.
I am beginning to wonder if our public outing of him was to soften any backlash from the fans for selling our best asset.
