In Jan, the season had turned around. We'd gone from bottom three candidates to knocking on the door to the top 10.
What happened?
We signed nobody. We replaced Ogbonna with Fonte and Payet with Snodgrass. Two positions which needed filling.
But after that, nothing. No striker. No RB. No CM option as we may have needed.
Whoever made that call, whether it was Slav saying 'save the money' or the Dave's saying 'we won't spend' or a mixture of both, it was a poor decision. We've gone from 9th to approaching a game we must not lose under any circumstances or we will be two defeats off the drop zone. What we do know is the owners have history with the January blues in past windows.
Slav may well have said save the money until the summer. Problem is if this goes on much longer he won't be the one spending it.
Alderz, how does that explain the goals we've conceded at corners? ;hmm
I would hazard a guess that we spend more time in training working on our attacking play than we do on our defending corners (could be wrong), which comes back to the manager's philosophy IMO.
We clearly need to work on it, because we've been very disorganised at defending set pieces this season, which is hardly surprising given we've changed GK and half the defence this season.
I don't understand why his possible sacking is being discussed. We had one great season - being carried on the hysteria of the last season at Upton Park. For me, this season we are just returning to normal service.
We must stick with Bilic, give him the chance over several seasons (say 5) to improve us bit by bit.
I agree 9th 10th is where we are with that squad less Payet .
The thing is too many players last season where 8/9 most games this season we have too many players 4/5/6 out 10 no real leader on the pitch and tactics that nobody seems to understand .
I watch Ironmen dvd which came Friday , I found the meeting with the coaching staff very funny slav said " we will start with a 5 a side then up it to a 7 a side after 10 minutes ...... real intensive meeting ;biggrin
I'm struggling with this "give him 5 seasons" type theory
What if he's not good enough? Why would you need 5 years to draw any conclusion?
Besides the he expectations of all of us here debating the issue are not really going to count. It's the expectations of our owners which matter and I guess Bilic will be measured against those.

This. I can't imagine who people think they'd want. I don't want to keep switching managers. He's proved once that he can get it right and he deserves a chance to prove it again.
I think Noble was right about supporters. To be honest, I think our club's supporters are deluded, not in their expectation of football but in that they think they're good fans (even the best). That must have been along time ago because from what I've seen, our fans are fickle. The atmosphere isn't just dead at this stadium, it was pretty bad a lot of the time at Upton Park.
;wave I'm going to split out some comments from this thread that are not about the manager, and for which we have already got threads on the relevant topic.
I might leave it up to you to work out where they've gone. ;biggrin
":The atmosphere isn't just dead at this stadium, it was pretty bad a lot of the time at Upton Park."
That applies to the vast majority of grounds in the Prem at least so to aim it at West Ham specifically is just plain wrong imo.
I don't care about other stadiums. I didn't say West Ham were worse than other teams, I said our fans aren't as good as they think they are. And actually, I think the atmosphere was often worse than dead, it has seemed like a weight on the players heads more often than it has uplifted them.
People talk about players being spoilt, not working hard enough, not caring etc. like the old days. Well, I wasn't there in the old days but if football supporters really were so good then, they've obviously changed. They want managers gone at every corner, decide players aren't good enough after 10 mins, do almost nothing to lift their team.
Who do we actually think we are? No manager will take us to the 'next level' without a takeover. What right do we have to be ahead of Everton, Southampton or Stoke, let alone the top 6? We could pick out a gem of a manager like Southampton have a couple of times but he'll then go somewhere else and we're left rebuilding again. I'd rather see us consolidate than try to jump forward.
Sure, we're not playing well and this season has been difficult but we're still 12th despite all the issues we had with Payet and Europa, imo, having an impact on how we had to buy in the Summer.
So that's a slightly different point. Keep him for several years but maybe get rid if he takes us down?
Which then presents a grey area - what to do if we are sitting in a hull type position after 30 games next season? Keep him with the risk we will sink. Or bring in someone to do a rescue job ;hmm
I personally do not think the daves will for one moment want to take any chances with our Prem status - they already got stung by not acting when it came to grant.
I think we will stay up just because the sides in the bottom 3 are so bad .
So if this works that way then 2 wins and a couple of draws should be enough so let Bilic have another window put his foot down with the board and demand some quality players get rid of those who failed this season and start again .
That said Bilic will have to learn from his mistakes and stubbiness and playing players out of position and also use the cups to bring in some young players like Southampton and even Everton have done this season .
Maybe a story on the back of Reece Oxford saying he was looking forward to learning from one of the best CBs. Kind of sets up the response that Stam is an upgrade on Bilic if you've no better information or ideas.

I would like to give him at least one more season hopefully a summer where we get the RB we've needed.

Of course I / we / most of us know it takes a lot longer
But there are many out there who thought it was like waving a magic wand and we'd be top 4 all of a sudden......
The point is they should be either extremely clear about what they say and allow for little to no confusion over expectations
That would help, IMO
I really don't think you can establish any useful policy on the basis of trying to ensure that the densest among us wouldn't be confused by it.
At some point, for me, you have to assume a reasonable level of cognitive engagement, and if that is missing, accept the Twit aftermath..
I might leave it up to you to work out where they've gone. ;biggrin
Just out of interest do you think Roeder should have been given a chance for several seasons? After all didn't he prove that he could do it too?

A manager has had a decent half season at a Champo club, and we're all over him?
I know there are those on here who don't rate the DDs, but surely no one could take this seriously, could they?
Reflect?
Reflect?

I'm a glass half full kind of person.
