January Transfer speculation, (it will be here before you know it)

  • Seems like we want a CB, Traore & a striker.
  • Not many established players would fancy a relegation dog-fight. That limits who we can recruit. I wonder what promises they would extract - bonus for staying in EPL, free transfer in the event of relegation?
  • Not sure it’s a relegation dogfight that would be the main obstacle. For strikers it’s our reputation as to what happens when they join us which would deter them.
  • My question as a striker would be to simply ask how they planned to integrate me into their style of play, I thought that Haller, Scamacca and yes, even Fullkrug and Wilson were pretty good options, they know their craft, but imo, it never seemed that we were set up to make the best use of them.

Take Man City, prior to Haarland their strikers were tricky players like Aguero who was considered one of the best strikers ever but he was a very different player to Haarland, who is now considered one of the best strikers ever.

Man City had to adapt to cater for the powerhouse style of play that Haarland brings to the table.

  • We need 9 more wins to reach 40 points, considered to be the safety mark in most seasons. By the time transfer window opens, half the season would be over. To stand a realistic chance of keeping our EPL status, we need to have at least one good striker and centre-back in place before the Wolves game on 3rd January. Hope we won't have the usual last-minute wait and in desperation sign anyone. AC Milan have lined-up Fullkrug before the Italian window opens, why can't WHU be as proactive?

The main reason is that we're usually looking to "do a deal" and there's more chance of that happening at the end of the window rather than the start. Next to no chance of anyone new in for Wolves imo, it would have to be a done deal by the time the window opens to get them registered in time for that match.

Fullkrug made 46 appearances the season before we signed him and was 3rd for minutes at Borussia Dortmund even though he played twice for Werder Bremen at the start of the season. They even dropped him from the squad for an away match at relegation contenders Mainz just to give him some rest before the final weekend

He was 31 years, 6 months when we signed him which is no age these days, he didn't get his first cap until November 2022 but had been a regular in the German squad since then and had played in every match of the 2024 Euros until they lost to Spain in the quarters

He might have been the wrong player for us but he wasn't that old, his"best years" weren't "behind him" and he didn't have known injury issues

....but he wasn't that old, his"best years" weren't "behind him" and he didn't have known injury issues

    I disagree on all points.

He was out twice at the end of the 22/3 season, and again at the start of 23/4 with calf and achilles tendon issues, which has been the main issues since he's been with us. If he has a better year going forward than he had in 23/4 then I'll be absolutely amazed. And 31 and a half is quite old to be lumping up over £20m for a player who had never played in the PL.

  • I think the never played in the PL is a bit overhyped. Large parts of PL games are played at a virtual walking pace with passes going left to right to right to left to left and occasionally one going forward.
You can no longer say it’s more physical because at the first whiff of contact players go down as if they’ve been hit with a lump hammer.
I think the main difference with the PL to other top European leagues is that on any given day any team can beat any another unless, as is the case currently, the any team is us.
  • Ain't it just the way. =)

Confirming that the average standard of the PL is way higher than that of other leagues, so expecting a player over 31 to suddenly step up when he's never previously played outside of Germany is a huge risk imo, especially for the money we paid and the wages we committed to.

However you look at it, unless we were also signing a very good younger CF alongside him, Fullkrug was a disaster of a signing, and not just from hindsight.

Haller played up front with two other attackers at Eintracht (Rebic & Jovic)? Scamacca was partnered with Raspadori. Did we at anytime have a line up to replicate this………No!
Diouf’s crossing ability would have been perfect for Fullkrug but it was never given a go.
  • I think pace is the most important part of an attacker for our needs for as with Moyes, Potter (not sure what we were with Potter really) and now Nuno we are a safety first side who look to break.

When a counter attacking side you either break with speed and drive or you have a hold up attacker who holds up until players arrive. I feel this is very difficult to do well nowadays as defences are so well organised, meaning whilst we are arriving they are organising. This is why I think Fulkrug has been so ineffective.

So we either sacrifice another player to attack if buying a Haller, Scamacca or Fulkrug or we look to an Antonio type, which is what I think we need to do.

Our tactics should be pretty straight forward we gain possession and hit one of the full backs to drive forward using the winger that side to link, whilst the other winger moves inwards looking to be available, or we get possession and we get it to Paquetta in the middle who holds up or delivers the pass to forwarding wingers or attacker down the middle, as both wingers move inwards to support. If this is the idea then it's driving pace and delivery that matters. So it's an Antonio type we need.
  • Yep, Füllkrug just didn’t work out. On paper it seemed a sensible signing, he seemed to have a good couple of years left in him & the expectation was to probably hope he got 15 goals a season for the next couple of years. Ultimately it didn’t work. Maybe he isn’t suited to the PL, to us, maybe he isn’t that good. But he has worked under 3 different managers in 18 months which can’t be ideal & he has picked up several small knocks.

I just hope we can actually sign a decent striker who may offer us some goals.
  • A couple of smart signings can change a season - look at Bowen & Souček - but I don’t think we have the ability or funds to find those sorts of players again. Nuno needs to be backed & I’d argue we need a CB & ST. But how good those players will be is the question. Squad fillers or cast offs aren’t going to keep us up.
  • Sporting have overtaken Portuguese rivals Porto in the race for West Ham winger Luis Guilherme, and are close to agreeing a deal for the permanent transfer of the 19-year-old Brazilian. (ESPN Brazil - in Portuguese, external)
  • A shame. I think Guillherme is good enough for us.
  • It is a shame, but this is three managers in a row that don't want to play him. It's wasting everyone's time for him being here at the moment.
  • Why would anyone want to join us?

Adama Traore is about the best we can do, but we need a centre back & a striker at the least, not depth options but starters..... good luck
  • Can’t wait. We already play some of the most boring, negative & risk-averse football in the league; now we want to add a counter specialist to continue that.

Other than loan signings/loan to buy/free agents I cannot us signing anyone.

The only permanent signings would be short term or has beens who want a guaranteed wage.

Unless we start planning for rhe Championship.
  • I expect Ings would be keen
  • Ings scored his first goal for Sheffield United on his 13th appearance three weeks ago
  • Ake being rumoured to be available, possibly for loan or £20m-£25m.

I don’t think he’s the dominant leader-type CB we need, but I think he’s better than what we have.
  • I would snap him up if we could get him on a loan.
  • I would snap anyone up who is Prem Lwague experience and wants to join us
  • I would snap anyone up who is Prem Lwague experience and wants to join us

Like Mavropanos and Kilman? Walker-Peters? Hermansen? Wilson? Summerville? Having PL experience really doesn’t mean all that much if the person with the experience is rubbish.
  • Our whole side bar Diouf, Potts & Magassa is PL experienced.
