So what are peoples views on our transfer business in this window?
  • Hard to say. I thought each of the last two summers had gone well at the time, but performances changed my mind.
  • So has Aguerd gone? Can't see any confirmation although we appear to have replaced him.
  • Re Cornet:

Can't see anything permanent happening, he's never going to get anywhere near the wages he's on here anywhere else, so he'll just keep going out on loan with us paying most of his wages until his contract is up.

He's gone back to Genoa on another loan:

It is odd that nothing has been announced about Aguerd yet though.
  • So what are peoples views on our transfer business in this window?

Quite good overall. I think the squad is better and younger and will definitely make us more competitive. Would like to have seen one or two more changes but that will always be the case. A CF must be our main priority in the next window(s)
  • Marseille have announced Emerson but no sign of Aguerd there either. 🤷‍♂️
  • I was hoping we'd sign Cresswell, having seen him in the U21 euros this summer. I said at the time I would like to see him here and this view hasn't changed.
  • So what are peoples views on our transfer business in this window?

I'm relatively happy, I had quite low expectations for this window because I saw the reports on how much money we lost and how we'd be PSR tight

Obviously disappointed to lose Kudus, but think the fee was fair

Like how they've tried to spend money on rejuvenating the squad

Fernandes (21), Diouf (20), Magassa (21) & Hermansen (25) all have their best years ahead of them, plus the 2 free transfers in KWP & Wilson, both who've impressed early, have a wealth of prem experience to compensate for the experience we lost during this summer with players that needed to be moved on

Would've prefered we kicked on with Cresswell instead of Igor, also would've liked for someone like Elliot, George, McAtee etc. But Summerville coming back and Guilherme good preseason negates that

    So "pretty good" imo
  • I'm semi-surprised Areola's still here, tbh. I can't see that he'll want to be a backup again, but with us being out of the Carabao, I can't imagine he'll get another minute until January.
  • The OS described Igor as aerially dominant, and I thought I'd look at his stats on FBRef.

So you're aware, the number of per 90, and the red/green bars are what percentile he ranks in compared to other centre backs. So, 98% of centre backs win more aerial duels than him, and only 1% lose more than him.
  • That is very amusing 😂
  • Yet he wins more than half of his aerial duels. Does this suggest that it's a very small sample size?

He didn't play a tonne for Brighton last year, so yeah probably. It just made me laugh.

Well I do think our 3 CBs won a single header in the first 2 games so pretty happy with those stats

  • So what are peoples views on our transfer business in this window?

Gutted it’s over tbh, still, January’s only a few months away.🎉

  • Sorry to hear that you are gutted Slacker. You can always join the others of us who feel the window wasn't as successful I we would have liked.

So Aguerd was one who won less. I wonder who the other one is. 🤔 😂
  • I thought those were a comparison of all CBs, not just WHUs?

I just miss it so much already.😢
I feel bereft when it SLAMS SHUT!!!
S’pose I’ll just have to watch actual football now.

Have you all formed a club or something?
  • So what are peoples views on our transfer business in this window?

I'm happy that we seemed to have, on the whole, been targeting younger players who hopefully haven't reached their peak yet; Fernandes, Diouf, Magassa and Hermansen certainly fit this profile. The 2 older players, KWP and Wilson both came in on a free, and not immediately, so hopefully we weren't rinsed with high signing on fees and wages; they maybe had to re-adjust their hoped-for renumeration when they weren't snapped up immediately.

Between the end of last season and now we've lost a lot of relatively high earners (and a few on less significant wages such as Coufal), so I'm sure the wage bill has come down, but we've still got Rodriguez here (unless we can offload him to somewhere with a later window) and Alvarez has only gone out on loan. JWP is also on far too high a wage for what he contributes, and I can see him getting far fewer minutes going forward with our new additions.

The 2 areas we haven't really addressed are CB and CF. Aguerd has gone very late in the window, with only a stop-gap loan signing of Igor Julio coming in yesterday; unless he has a Dawson-like impact, it feels very underwhelming. We looked so much better with a back 4 against Forest, but we don't really have the CBs for it because we need Mavropanos in there for his physicality and heading ability, yet he is never far away from an absolute howler.

Up front we replaced 2 30 something CFs with another 30 something CF, and this remains an area of huge concern for me. Really disappointed we didn't add to our fire-power with a younger CF such as Gueye.

  • I think it's a wait and see window and I agree with Alderz in that I was very optimistic last season and got bitterly disappointed. The names we were associated with that I would have liked were Grealish and Harvey Elliot, so disappointed not to have landed one of those, Grealish was keen by all accounts (Twitter) but Elliot wasn't. also Liverpool have insisted on a buy back clause with him which would have put me off.

Aside from Fernandes I know very little about our signings, so it's really just hoping they were not just random darts thrown but identified targets designed to improve us and work together in a coherent system.

I have always felt Summerville can come good if staying fit and getting a run in the side and if he does that will be like a new signing in itself. I am also hoping Paqueta will repay our patience with him this season, if doing so he could be key to a successful season, but could just as likely become anonymous and leave us thinking we should have snapped Villa's hand off.

It's done now so lets see, and hope for the best.

I think people have to understand that player turnover this window has been 21. That is a huge job & has helped us trim & refresh elements of the squad.

Those saying they are underwhelmed with the numbers who have come in, I don’t personally see this rebuild as a one window job. I am hopeful by the end of next window (provided we improve & stay up) we will have a pretty much complete squad of players.

The only disappointment for me is striker. Füllkrug is, IMO, not good enough to lead the line, & Wilson is injury prone & 33. I am not saying he is past it, but I feel he will miss games & was not bought to be a first 11 striker.

Those saying CB is not addressed, let’s be real. We have spent:
    Kilman - £40m
    Todibo - £35m
    Mavropanos - £20m
    Igor - loan

We need to be getting more out of the £100m spend on CBs, not simply spending more money on new players.
  • I have no problem what so ever with having a centre forward who plays regularly for Germany. 🤞 Igor will be the back up option to Kilman & Todibo in a back four with the 2 new mf’s in along side Paqueta. Bowen & Summerville on the flanks with Fullkrug to lead the line. It’s after that we may struggle as the options in midfield aren’t good.
  • I notice Füllkrug is injured, according to the German national team.
