Official new manager - Julen Lopetegui

  • I think that one of the most important requirements of any new manager is that he is able to communicate his ideas clearly, i.e. he has a very good command of the English language.
It was hard enough understanding Moyesie =) , but J-Lo is nigh on impossible.

Listening to Fullkrug's interview on the OS made me think that maybe a German (or Dutch for that matter) manager might be the better bet if there are no suitable British managers available.
  • Sky Sports chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol on under-pressure West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui: "I think a decision on his future will be made before the end of the week.
"The latest information we have is that it's 60-40 that Julen Lopetegui will be leaving before Friday.
"The decision will be made by West Ham's board. I think there's a general acceptance that performances simply haven't been good enough.
"At the moment, I think it's more likely he goes than stays but this is a difficult decision for the board to make because he was only appointed in the summer and they spent a lot of money in the transfer market."
  • Edin Terzić Incoming is my prediction 🧙‍♂️
  • Crazy to be in this position really. My only hope is, with the DoF in place, all these signings were made irrespective of who the manager is - if these were all Lop signings then I don't know what Tim is supposed to be doing.

I wasn't excited about Lopetegui and didn't want him in the summer, but once he was here I expected things to be a lot better than this. We look pretty clueless, especially at the back, and I do wonder how many of these players know what they're supposed to be doing or how we want to play - both at the back and going forward.

More than anything, I'm bored of seeing us get hammered and giving up so many chances. Teams just walk through us game after game. I feel like when Lopetegui was at Wolves he had them very solid, especially at home, so I'm even more confused about what we've seen.

I wouldn't be sorry if he were sacked but at the same time don't have a lot faith in them making a better decision just a few months later, so feels a bit of a mess all round.
  • IF he goes Potter would be my choice.
  • I do understand anyone who would want him out and up until three matches ago I would have probably been in agreement, despite feeling in most circumstances a manager must be given more time to implement a plan with new players. However, the matches against Newcastle and Leicester have been very different to any earlier performance and I feel he is getting better. Personally I would give him until after the Christmas period to see if there is improvement or if these performances of late have just been a couple of isolated matches.

I feel there will be people behind the scenes who will know what the spirit is like in the camp and where the players are with him and that will and should also form part of the decision.

    Terzic - free agent
    Potter - free agent
    Hjulmand - free agent
    Conceicao - free agent

These names are only being considered because they're free. All of Sullivan's previous hires were free. Cost is, and always will be, his primary consideration.

For once, I'd like us to go for someone because they're the right fit for the club with a career on an upward trajectory. Terzic and Potter might fit this criteria, but I bet if they were in a job they'd be nowhere near the list.

The problems at this club are bigger than Lopetegui, and ironically take the form of a diminutive Welshman.
  • The linked names do not really inspire any confidence.
  • The one manager I really want to see at this club is Thomas Frank, think he has everything a West Ham team and support would want to see from a club. But Brentford are on a way better trajectory (Brighton style) than we are.
  • I’m still hoping that we’re looking at Michael Carrick
  • My concern with J-Lo is with his communication skills. I’m afraid I find him close to imcomprehensible. With a team of mainly non English native speakers, I doubt that they do fully understand what he wants them to do. He may be a skilled coach, but chaos in these circumstances is almost inevitable. Our next man must have much better command of English.

His English is fine. If it was written down and given to the players, it would be comprehensible. There are a couple of things he does that reflect the grammar of his native language - but you only have to see/hear these a few times to be able to get it, and do the automatic substitution in your head.

But his accent is very strong, which definitely does hinder communication. As with most accents, once you've listened to it for a while, you can usually tune in - it just needs time.

As the players see him every day at training and team meetings, I really think they will be tuned in to it by now.

I think this focus on the language is a red herring.

MrsGrey, I'm not sure it is the red herring you suggest.
You also have to factor in that most of the first team are not native English speakers so trying to understand J-Lo must be doubly difficult.
  • Gut feeling is he’s been sacked & club are looking to sign up a replacement before the announcement.
  • We better hurry up if we do as I can see Wolves been in the market shortly.
  • Some teams, note I say some, would react quickly so as to not miss out on their preferred new managerial target.

We can get Gary O'Neil you mean. If we are quick?

Hadn't thought of it that way, but if he's out of work......
  • I would take Gary
  • It feels like he will be gone as this debate is very public now. It feels like where you would position it if you have someone lined up. If not I wonder who they would place as caretaker? Noble would be popular and other than that I guess it would be Mark Robson stepping up from u21's.

  • It does have a feel of being a fait accompli; if it doesn't happen now, it's still going to be rumbling on in the background with him only ever being 2 bad games away from the sack.
  • I would like Mark Noble in the mix, probably alongside Terzic.

We can then attract Slav back to make a dynamic trio!
  • Whilst I am sort of leaning towards JLOut right now, the idea that Mark Noble, with 0 management or coaching experience, would be a better option than a former Spain, Porto, Real Madrid and Sevilla manager is crazy to me. If the option is Noble for a few games or JLIn, I’m JLIn.

West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui was involved in a heated half-time exchange with defender Jean-Clair Todibo on Saturday as the club consider sacking their under-fire head coach.

I've seen mention of a falling out between them over on KUMB too.

From bad to worse, he’s become a moaner, every time a decision doesn’t go his way he moans about the officials. No thanks.
  • Apparently it was Todibo who started it because he was frustrated at the first half. Imagine he was frustrated at the set up and tactics.
