I agree he shouldn't be forced to actively promote it. Although, the rainbow laces and similar gestures isn't actively promoting it, anyway. It's saying that they won't actively discriminate against it, surely.
This may be slightly controversial as we only have our own perspective but imo, the “Support” for the initiative is a collective one which has been assumed by the league/clubs and as a representative of the club he is simply being asked to wear the armband in support of the clubs obligation.
He is not being asked to advocate personally on the merits and to me, his stance comes across more as a “look at me” moment.

I cooked my first ever Thanksgiving dinner last week, it was Mrs shrugged’s first ever Thanksgiving outside the USA
Did turkey, mash, stuffing, gravy and green bean casserole although I made it with fresh mushrooms and milk rather than Campbell’s mushroom soup.
She reckons I got it right although not as good as her Grandma’s
