  • Its a dead concept that hasn't worked since day 1.

Is that FFP or Chelsea =)
  • Isn't FFP salary against turnover. I'm sure DS said it not the fees but the wages.

(Now patiently waiting for MrsG to come to my rescue)
  • I believe it includes the trasnfer fees but broken down over the contract

Like £20mil Diop signed on a 4 year deal is counted as £5m loss per season for 4 years, not £20mil in the year we bought him

    I think
  • My understanding is that there are 2 separate things here. One is that wages can only be a certain percentage of turnover. Secondly, there is a limit to what financial losses you can make.

For the first calculation, it is simply weekly wages that are counted.

The second is based on the club's accounts, and transfer fees are treated as capital in those and, as Champo says, are written off over the length of the contract. If a player is sold, there may be a profit or loss on disposal depending on how much he is sold for compared to his current book value (not how much we paid for him). In Champo's example, if we sold Diop for 10m after 3 years, we might feel that we've lost money (bought for £20m, sold for £10m, so a £10m loss) on him, but from an accounting point of view we'd have made a £5m profit on disposal, as his book value after 3 years would only be £5m.

Disclaimer: the accounting practice is almost certainly correct, but my understanding of FFP may be completely wrong.
  • I am not being funny, we really don’t need Eze. Diangana is the ideal player for us & we need him getting regular game time if he is going to stay.
  • And as I say that, QPR have accepted a £19.5m offer for Eze from Palace, according to the Telegraph.
  • Completely agree

Dont get me wrong, if manage to sell Anderson or Yarmolenko tomorrow I'd like for us to compete for him (as he seems a good talent) but hes not what we need

Diangana is a new signing this year. Think he gives us an option that we dont have in the squad in that hes a natural winger on his stronger foot

He makes the game bigger and can beat his man down the touchline, his asisst today was classic old school winger in getting to the byline and pulling it back

Now we’ve got Ajeti and Hugill off the wages...
  • He’s definitely in our age range
  • Depends if we were ever really interested
  • Think he will be a good signing fit Palace, definitely need someone like him there team is very old and lacking flair

Wonder if hes there to partner or replace Zaha
  • alderz, begs the question are we really interested in anyone with no funds to use?

Honestly, I don’t think we’ll sign anyone. If we do it will be late in the window and not an expensive signing.

Agreed. I think it's quite telling that Gold's only foray into Twitter recently was to post a picture of Diangana, Johnson and Coventry. My take is that he's pushing the U23s because they're likely to be making up the numbers in the squad this season.

If we do sign anyone, I fully expect it to happen once the more significant moves are done by other clubs, e.g. Chilwell to Chelsea means Sullivan can make a loan offer for Alonso or Emerson.
  • Starting left back and backup centre back and that'll be it for me

Personally i'd like one of the 4 young centre backs on show to be given a chance as 4th choice but Moyes said he likes experienced defenders

Agree that we look like we can use the U23 instead of buying freebies and past their prime players on big wages like we used to for squad depth

Wonder if we can get some first hand scouting on saturday when we play Brentford, hopefully have eyes on Rico Henry
  • £20m for Eze seems like an awfully lot of money to me.
  • I would be much happier promoting some of the U23s than getting in some last minute freebies, personally.

Cardoso, Akinola and Alese are all highly rated centre backs, Diangana has done it for a year at the top of the championship, Cullen has several years of league football under his belt. It’s not like these guys are non league players

Plus Baptiste. I remember Carlton Cole singling him out at a stadium tour I did. And that was a few years back.
  • One thing that I don’t like about modern football is the art of coaching does seem to be gone, & the ones who do it seem to be the ones ridiculed (Pulis, Warnock, Big Sam etc).

It’s not from the Guardiola handbook, but it’s managers making players better, whether that be via positional tweaks, man management, tactical changes etc. Moyes spoke about it on the website where he said that money is tight & he is focused solely on making the players we have, better.

It’s all very well bemoaning the fact we have not managed to sign Eze, but when you have Lanzini, Anderson, Yarmolenko, Antonio, Bowen, Noble, Wilshere, Snodgrass & now Diangana all offering options in that 3 behind the striker, you wonder where we need to fit another £15m-£20m player, especially one unproven in the Championship. Arguably we have the better player in Diangana, who had at least proven to some extent he can hold his own in the PL, albeit needing some work.

We will 100% sign a LB, I am certain, & a CB. We do need a striker, but as we saw yesterday, Antonio continued up front & looks to be seen now exclusively as a striker. Ideally another CM would be ideal, or a player who can convert into the CB role as well as CM. Lundstrum, Henry, Duffy & a striker would be the best we can expect with no real cash.
  • I think we need to be careful about the U23s. I've seen a number of people on social media saying Longelo should be our starting LB after his brief appearance against Wycombe yesterday, and that Baptiste could become our 4th choice CB.

Highly-rated is one thing, but we can't expect them to perform in the PL straight away. I know Rice has done it, but for every Declan Rice there are a hundred Hogan Ephraims.

Diangana, absolutely. He tore up the Championship last season so deserves a chance in the PL. Cullen has probably done enough to be a bench player for us this season, but I'd be reluctant to throw too many of the other untested kids into the squad. I'd rather sign Duffy (for example) and send the likes of Alese and Baptiste on loan in the Championship; if they do well, they can challenge the senior players the following season.
  • The more I read about the Eze thing on twitter the more stupid it seems. Some of our fans saying things like we've been outdone by the likes of Palace.
Do we really need to spend that sort of money on that type of player? Was Eze better than Grady last season? Don't we need to focus our limited funds on other areas?
  • Pretty sure Eze is more of a No10. So he wouldn't be competing with Diangana on the left; he'd be competing with Lanzini, Fornals and Wilshere. Arguably still not a priority requirement, but if we're open to offers for Lanzini and are actively looking to get Wilshere off the books, then if both go (admittedly unlikely) then our options in that position are limited.

I would like to have brought Eze in; he's quicker and more direct than any of our current No10s, and would offer more than Lanzini and the always-unreliable Wilshere. I think a lot of the fan's frustration is that it's been reported that he wants to come and Moyes wants him, but there's seemingly been no movement from the board. Obviously no-one really knows what's going on, but that doesn't stop us all speculating.

Yeah but regardless of what exact position he plays we still have a load of attacking players. And none seem to be leaving anytime soon. It's clear we have limited funds and I'd much rather we spent money getting in a new left back and a forward.

Going on how we performed after lockdown our issue wasn't scoring goals. It was Cresswell being roasted and praying Antonio didn't get injured.

Also if we do get another striker (unlikely) or Haller comes good, Antonio is another attacking player that we need to fit in the midfield.
  • Don't get me wrong, I agree that our priorities are elsewhere. I just think that Eze would be an upgrade on Lanzini and Wilshere in the squad and in an ideal world we'd improve across the park.

To be honest, Henry, Duffy and someone like Tammy Abraham (he's not getting a kick all the time Werner is fit) on loan would be enough for me.

I think Lanzini has proven to be a class player, admittedly last season was a shocker ( as was Anderson etc etc ) but don't forget how he played b4 his horror injury, whereas this Eze dude has really done what? a decent season in the championship, not exactly proven ( I'm not saying he's not worth it and he's probably decent, but to say he's an improvement/upgrade on Lanzini, not sure that statement be justified.
  • But Lanzini isn't the same player as he was before the injury, and never will be. He's been poor for a while now and for a No10 he's not been producing goals or assists (although granted he scored against Wycombe yesterday).

All about opinions, of course, but I'd have Eze in over Lanzini. Have a feeling it could be another Maddison/Dendoncker situation.
  • But there is nothing to say that Lanzini is going anywhere. There is no way we can afford another player of that mould. Lanzini goes then yes I agree but Eze and QPR are not going to wait around for ever.
