I think championship clubs will be very wary of spending as they wont know when crowds will be back and do not receive anything like to TV money of the premiership. From our point of view he doesn't even get onto the pitch so any return and to get rid of the wages is probably a good move. If he goes we will have 10m with the money from celtic and possibly 40-80k saved in wages. That will hopefully be re-invested.
I think we were connected to a Czech player that Soucek used to play with, I feel that could be an avenue to explore as Soucek may have the inside on who is worth a punt and I feel he may be pivotal for us this season so bringing in a friend could help him settle also.
Agree with Alderz/claretandbluesky, think the club needed him off the wage bill, plus with covid any fee now will likely be about 30% cheaper for unwanted players
We may have only got £10mil for Hugill & Ajeti, but we have also got £100k p/w off our wage bill
If you include the wages of Zaba, Sanchez and Ngakia (and some compensation) we have probably cut almost £250k p/w off the wage bill for players who genuinely didnt have much (or any) influence on last season
That's probably the reason we are likely to take hits on some of the other high earners, or we have to hold out that they start earning their money
You see some of the reported earnings for our players (the below is likely not 100% accurate but probably not far off) Yarmo - £110k Wilshere - £100k Anderson - £80k Lanzini - £70k Reid - £70k (reported we pay 85% of his wages while hes on loan) Cresswell - £50k Masuaku - £40k Balbuena - £40k Roberto - £25k
You could argue any, if not all, of the above are open to offers, and the above cost us half a million every week!!
Bournemouth will not let leave England international Callum Wilson leave on the cheap despite interest from Tottenham, the Daily Mail reports.
After signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Joe Hart, Spurs' attentions are now reportedly turning to a back-up for Harry Kane with Wilson the man they want.
However, according to the newspaper, Bournemouth want £30m for their striker and are unwilling to move much further from that valuation. West Ham, Everton and Crystal Palace are also interested in England forward
Interesting that everyone has been seeing Johnson as our new RB. I think he could be our new LB, if Fredericks stays injury-free. He's got a good left foot and put some good crosses in. Either way, for me he's the first choice at either LB or RB
Dont get me wrong, thought he was fantastic and imo I'm counting him as a new signing this season....but playing 38 games in comparison to, what, 3(?) Is a compeltely different scenario
And with any young player his form is likely going to be erratic
Would prefer him in his natural position, but you are right he may be an option at LB as well
True Champo, but I've been impressed with his positional play, and he's improved every match. Much like Rice did. All his games have been against top teams or 6 pointers, and he's not let anyone down yet.
At least with the lack of spending amongst the majority of teams hopefully a lot more youngsters start coming through from a number of teams. I reckon we could see a record number of appearances for U21s this season throughout the league.
Youd like to think so, however you have to have the players at the right stage of their careers before you lump them in
I do like that some of our better prospects are a little older and further along their development, like Dianagana (22), Holland (22), Johnson (20), Coventry (20) and Cardoso (19)
Compare that to Diallo, Baptiste and Fevrier who are talked about as some of our best prospects, they are all still 17 and probably not ready for many minutes
Either way I agree we will likely see more minutes given to younger players which is (imo) good for the league
I don't think we were ever officially linked with him, but he came up a lot earlier in this thread so I thought I'd share that Antonee Robinson has signed for Fulham for £2m.
I posted this on July 23 on this thread. That Robinson tackle is up there with the most cynical I have ever seen. If that is typical of his play and character he should be banned from playing forever. I, for one, would never want to see that type of player pull on a West Ham shirt.
Obviously coached in the Roy Keane method of defending. I'm very happy he's gone to Fulham.
Can't say I'm disappointed as I had never seen him play nor had I even heard of him before we were linked, but seems like a savvy move in this climate, young LB who cost £2mil could be a bargain for Fulham
That said, in the championship alone, Manning and Rico Henry appear to be superior players to him, both of whom we've been linked with
Also we've been linked to Mykolenko and I think the LB at Slavia Prague, so maybe we think we can do better and weren't seriously after him
I do want us to sign a new LB (imo if we had 1 signing it would be at LB), but would rather we get one we actively want and not just a cheap option (Fredericks was a freebie and the jury is still out on him)
New contracts signed with coaching staff, so we can afford to employ them..
Are we sure that they've only signed on as coaches? Could be cover at LB (Pearce) and attacking midfield (Nolan) knowing how G&S like to get value for money.
The Times reporting that West Ham are in talks with Jack Wilshere over paying off the final year of his contract or finding him a new club with his salary partly subsidised, to get his £100k weekly wage off the books.
I cannot see a situation where he gets any game time, so not having him on the wage bill makes sense.
HOWEVER, paying up his contract doesn’t get him off the wage bill it just means paying him everything now instead of spread out.
AND, realistically is anyone going to want to take him on loan? Presumably we’d want at least like 50% of his wages covered to make it worth our while. I can’t see (m)any clubs wanting to spend £50k pw on keeping their physios busy.
Gazzetta Dello Sport and Sport Media Set both report that Juventus are looking to sell players (who isn't?) and have been touting around the Premier League.
Among the list of players they're supposedly offering is 33yo German international CM Sami Khedira (77 caps) who Calciomercato linked with West Ham and Wolves in April
He's had serious injury issues, he hasn't played since December and only managed 17 appearances the season before, he's 33 and on mega wages.

Was never going to be a straight swap without a fee, now we have access to a greater fee
Maybe we’re using him to lower the Cantwell price...
OCS
I think it’s more that he’s allegedly on £40k a week so we’re not going to get a good fee for him

West Ham are ready to sell Issa Diop to Manchester United for a £45m transfer fee.

A slow news day on the sports desk...
