  • Really hope that's true MrsG, really don't want to lose our Little Gem. I'm just always dubious when players suddenly have minor injuries when speculation around them is high, e.g. Arnie just before moved to us.

It's a good business model get them for free and sell them next summer...

But also it's a sign of our progress that we can sell these players without an impact on the first 11...

When BFS got us up they would all have been first 11 probably...

It does impact on the first 11 if we don't reinvest it though.

With Antonio and Kouyate injured we can get by. But another injury to any midfielder and we will be looking light. You could say that, that is the way it just happens sometimes. But there should be two players for every position and we are 'Potentially' selling some wingers leaving us no backups. We pretty much are running with Arnie / Ayew / Lanzini (if he even makes it !) otherwise I have no idea what formation we will playing since we only have one fit striker currently ! and probably only one fit striker come the first game of the season.

imagine if we were still relying on Sakho and Carroll becoming fit again ;whistle
  • Yeold - ;ok

I was meaning they are players that are not part of our first 11 assuming all are fit...
  • True Vorse but the game is more than a first 11 to be fair. For West Ham its more like a game of 22 with the injuries we get.
  • Could be a consideration, especially if playing 3 at the back, that Cresswell and Byram are potentially 'back-up' wingers ... certainly not first or second choice, but back-ups none the less.
  • GK: Hart, Adrian

    RB: Zabaleta byram

CB: Reid, Ogbonna, Fonte, Collins (Burke)

    LB: Masuaka, Cresswell

CM: Noble, Kouyate, Obiang, Fernandes (Cullen)

    AM: Lanzini, Ayew

WG: Arnautovic, Antonio, Snodgrass, Feghouli (Holland)

    ST: Hernandez, Carroll, Sakho (Martinez)

Only we could have a strength in depth like that but also feel uneasy because so many of them pick up injuries

Think we are a centre midfielder, winger (or 2 if Snodgrass and Feghouli leave) and a attacker short

Personally think Adrian will stay until Jan at least. See how it goes for 6 months and if he can gain his place back (think we all know never gonna happen apart from injury).

We still need some depth to our squad. Really need another CM, another forward and potentially another person who can play behind the striker in one of those three positions, especially with Fegs and Snodgrass looking unlikely to both be here. You only have to take out one or two players (like Kouyate and Lanzini) and we're struggling again to field a competitive side. I think it's very naive to think we can rely on Fernandes and Cullen as back-up. Currently we have injuries hanging over 2/3 of our first team midfielders. Defence is ok, but depends how badly Collins and Oggy's knocks are and if Reid is gonna be ready for Man Utd.

If we don't get those additional 2/3 players I don't think this window has been a success, just a window of signings that we should be making.

Really hope G&S have stopped patting themselves on the back now and realise that a good start to the window needs to be backed up in the next couple of weeks with a couple more. They've done well but if we resting on our laurels we're gonna be short for the season IMO.

2 players would fill the squad (to 25) after which we'd have to sell before we could buy.
  • edited July 2017
    ;ok

So CM and striker fills it.

If Snodgrass and/or Fegs leave we need a replacement for him/them who is an improvement.
  • If the window closes now it's been a phenomenally successful one.
  • If we sign a CM or a ST or a WG or a CB that means we may as well let Cullen, Martinez, Holland, Burke and Rice just go now.

If we need depth for emergencies let's use our youngsters
  • I'm with Luke, superb start, but we need a couple more. N'Diaye and Dembele would make it the perfect window!
  • I agree to an extent, ald, but I also think they would benefit from regular games. So Champo loans would be good, taking them out of our emergency equation.

    Eski ;ok

    Jorderz/alderz - disagree.

It is never healthy IMO to rely on youngsters through necessity rather than choice in an emergency situation.

Slav may feel Martinez is nowhere near ready yet, so Chico gets injured and Andy/Sakho not reliable due to injuries and one wanting out a year ago. He throws Martinez in and it does more harm than good to both him and the team.

Same with CM. Kouyate injured. Noble and Obiang start. Not working for some reason. He has to resort to Cullen and Fernandes every time as there is no alternative. Not healthy IMO.

I am pleased with all four signings but I felt we needed 6/7 when the season ended and I still do.
  • One of the biggest positives about this window for me is that we've signed players who improve the first team. In the last we've bought squad players who were a waste of time.

IMO, if you sign some 26 year old CM from the Turkish league to be the sub then what is the point in having an academy.
  • we need another striker..... Andre Gray and if Snodgrass or Feghouli go at least another buy there needed.
  • From what Slav has said, we've got all our targets, and anything else will be one out one in.

Can't understand how anyone could think our business this window was anything other than a success.
  • Something that is a success can still be improved upon. West Ham are a multi-million pound business, they shouldn't settle just because if they stopped now it would be a success.
  • We won't sign 3 more and anybody hoping for that is going to be disappointed, IMO.
  • Eski ;ok

    Completely wrong attitude. To settle.

We've just about made up for last summers disaster.

Now to top it off for this summer.

We won't sign 3 more and anybody hoping for that is going to be disappointed, IMO.

Well I'll be disappointed indeed if we think a 32 year old, one striker and a winger are worthy of business done.

We've done solid business. It's been blown way OTT by many though. Hernandez is a good striker. But good strikers still go on baron runs. How many goals for him in 2017? Is it one?

We've upgraded Randy with Hart, Arbeloa with Zabaleta, Valencia with Arnautovic and Zaza with Hernandez.

    Good stuff.

What about Calleri, Fletcher, Nordtveit etc. They all need replaving in the squad too.

We know we will pick up a shed load of injuries. We always do. Need a bit more insurance IMO.

For example, Capoue has just had a fall out with Silva. Rumours he is available. That would be a brilliant and affordable upgrade on Nordtveit. Again proven in the PL.
  • Not to forget we also lost Tore - not that we had him in the first place ;hmm

I think we've significantly improved our match day 14, which is clearly what Slav set out to do. I think that is a successful window. I don't think that if we fail to sign other players that this will take away from what we have done.

Others are, of course, feel to free as disgruntled as they like. Me, I'm well gruntled.

We don't have the pull or the matches for genuine quality players not even to be getting on the bench.

I'm with alderz - give yoot a chance if needed.

  • I hope he doesn't think we only take 15 players to a match...
  • I want to give youth a chance but on our own terms, not forced on us by injuries to areas we could have reinforced.
  • Was that a failed ninja edit? Changed 15 to 14 ;wink I'm watching...
  • It's a successful window, not an outstanding one.
  • edited July 2017
    Yeah ;ok

    A 7/10 window.

But we could make that 8 or 9/10 with a couple more additions.

As it is our bench at Old Trafford is gonna look something like:

Adrian (?), Fonte, Byram, Masuaku, Fernandes, Snodgrass (?), Martinez

    That isn't good enough IMO.

The first 11-14 is fine being reinforced, providing they put in top performances every week and stay fit. We still need game changing potential off the bench though.

Not a failed edit at all.

I was referring to the 14 players, 11 + 3 subs, who can get a game in any one match.

Last season, for a lot of games, looking at the bench when things weren't going well didn't make me feel like much could change.

We've currently got 2/3 places in the squad of 25 (depending on whether you count Fernandes.)

We've got 4 senior CDs 2 each of FBs.

We've got 3/4 holding MF , 4 attacking MF, 2 wide forwards and 3 CFs.

Pretty much any of those players could be replaced by better players, but I don't think they will this window, unless one of the fringe players decides to move (e.g. Feg/Snodders)
