  • Potter will get the club where it wants to be, I have no doubt. As I said when we appointed him, there will be dull games - there were lots of dull games when he was at Brighton, games where they passed sideways and backwards all match, and drew 0-0 or lost. Games where they missed a load of chances & got beat.

BUT, I do feel he will offer stability and if you like slow, possession based football, you will enjoy our style when he has been given some time.

But I also believe our squad is not very good - I don’t rate players like Álvarez, Kudus etc. Our best players are Souček & Bowen (currently, & I have changed my mind somewhat on Souček). Outside of those two, we don’t really have much else.
  • @MrsGrey, It was more a comment on how poorly the first half of the season has gone under J Lo & no I didn't want us to keep the last but one manager. =)
  • Villa away, Chelsea away, Brentford home, Arsenal away next four games. Strap in.

You can’t blame Potter - he played the same 11 as against Fulham (rested Soler due to his hamstring issue) & then brought off the bench what he had - Orford, Soler, Scarles, Ings, Guilherme. He used all the tools at his disposal, against an in-form side, to try & get something from the game. Mateta ensured we couldn’t get a 0-0. We need some signings & fast. The squad is way too light & lots of those players (Bowen, Todibo, Antonio, Füllkrug) are not due back for a long time. We don’t need an emergency CB & ST - we still need them from the summer.
  • An interesting read before the Fulham game was that Potter had one or two 90 minute training sessions which were 15 minutes longer than our normal training sessions up until then. Didn’t say whether he thought we were undertrained or he just needed longer to assess. Possibly the reason we run out of steam around the 70 minute mark as they’re normally walking off at that point 😏
Our general fitness levels may be down to our training facilities as Rush Green is hardly state of the art.
  • But we've used the same training facilities for years. And levels have fitness have (allegedly) varied.... can't be the result of the facilities.
  • Fitness levels must be a bad reflection on the fitness coach/es IMO, because most look SO sluggish....

Like I said yesterday, Potter has his work cut out with the squad he's inherited and current injuries, but many other teams could moan about injuries....

You have to start thinking what the hell has Steiden done, if he's behind most signings...

Yesterday IMO was one of the worst performances for a while, it was PAINFUL to watch.
Their keeper literally could have sat on a chair for 85 minutes.....

But I'm certainly not gonna make any judgement on Potter because of it, he's only been here 2 minutes.....

Like @Lukerz pointed out, our next 4 games.....Oi.......Good luck....

100% agree. Not concerned about Guilherme as clearly a risk that may pay off if we keep patience for a couple of seasons, but too many of the others just don't appear up to standard.
Personally I would like to see more plucked from the lower English leagues, I am sure the motivation will be higher and we are less likely to be seen as a 'stepping stone' to the Premier League.

    Like Summerville?

We have the training facilities needed, training pitches, gyms etc. We don't need gated lawned entrances and plush marble corridors. Premier league players are pampered enough already Rush Green brings a feeling of normality.
  • Just my views. No idea who was behind the moves, just my guess.

Alvarez - Tim - Made an impact but has fallen away.
Mavropanos - Moyes - Too inconsistent to be a regular starter.
Kudus - Tim - Bright start but has dropped off dramatically.
Guilherme - Tim - Looked bright when he gets minutes but to early to call.
Fodderingham - Needed 3rd string keeper so meh!
Kilman - Lopi - Is struggling at the moment after a bright start.
    Summerville - ? - Looks good. Let's play him.
Rodriguez -Sully - Steady player but too slow.
Fullkrug - Tim - Don't know due to injuries.
Todibo - Tim - Looks classy but needs an injury free run of games.
Wan-Bissaka - Sully - He shows the difference in class between mid table and the top.
Soler - Tim - I think he looks the real deal.

Pretty sure Mavropanos was a Tim suggestion as Moyes was doing his absolute best to get the Maguire deal done; when it fell through he took what Tim offered as supposedly being better than nothing.

I also think Alvarez and Kudus had been targeted before Tim arrived, although he may well have played a part in getting them across the line (which, to me, is one of his best attributes, I do at least feel as though we have much more of a chance of getting a deal done with Tim heading the negotiations).

  • Whitehorse nobody is asking for gated lawn entrances or marble corridors but most of it is still portakabins and I’m not sure what the medical or fitness areas are like.

    Areola
    Wan-Bissaka - Casey - Kilman - Emerson
    Souček - Álvarez - Soler
    Summerville - Paquetá
    Kudus

Looks like the best side we have now - & that’s hoping Summerville is fit.
  • I’d have Scarles at LB
  • Summerville was probably Sullivan, as he’s mates with his agent isn’t he?

I cannot blame anyone for targeting Summerville, he lit up the championship last year and I think could still come good despite looking a little lightweight at this level

He was probably on a number of radar screens
  • Think it’s easy to look at form now, after things have been a mess for months and dismiss a lot of players. Things can easily turn around.

Kudus played on the left for this season and the latter part of last season, despite it not really suiting him. It’s not like he was playing the same position and suddenly lost form. Hopefully with time he can get back into things.

Alvarez has awful discipline but I think gets more criticism for his general play than he deserves. Though he should be banned from shooting. He does a lot of good things still imo.

I’m sure Areola and Paqueta can get back into form. Soler and Summerville can hopefully get more time, though I think they’re victims of us buying too many players and not being able to give them minutes. Todibo and Fullkrug we need to get over their injury problems. Kilman has shown he’s got quality in the past and has had periods of fantastic form at Wolves - hopefully he can do that again.

It’s really easy to go through a list of players and just say they’re bad as if there aren’t loads of contextual factors involved. There’s plenty Potter can do with these players with time, I hope.

It’s easy to go and buy a whole new set of replacements and go through this whole issue again next season.
  • A lot of good points there, Outcast. What I would say, though, is the midfield is horrendous & needs to be revamped. Todibo, Füllkrug, Summerville, there may be solutions for. But that ponderous, slow midfield of Alvarez, Rodriguez, Soucek, Soler, Paqueta needs to be replaced with a more dynamic & capable unit.
  • I agree about the dynamism. I think that has need fixing for a long time. It was why I was quite excited when it looked like we were getting Onana.

But don’t know if that’s a revamp issue as much as a tweaking. It needs a rebalancing that might bring out more in the rest of them.

    But you'd keep Mavropanos?
  • Mavropanos gets a stupid second yellow.

Look on the bright side. He can’t play the next 3 matches.
  • BND - no, he’s probably the one player outside the midfield that needs to be moved on.

Wan-Bissaka, Emerson, Scarles, Kilman, Todibo, Souček, Soler, Paquetá, Kudus, Bowen, Summerville - there is some talent there. Everybody else could easily be moved on.

Areola, Mavropanos, Álvarez, Rodríguez & Füllkrug (don’t think he’ll ever ‘ignite’ here) can all be moved on. Coufal, Cresswell, Fabiański, Ings, Antonio will be coming to the end.
  • Mavropanos gets a stupid second yellow.

Think it's just the 1 game for a 2nd yellow.....

Thanks Jay that's made me feel much better - not. ;)
  • For me the most important thing we are missing is pace. Bowen, Kudus and Summerville have that, but two are injured.
This is why Guillherme should play.

If we dip into the January transfer market, I would like a striker with pace, and a midfielder who is at least not slow.

  • @Lukerz, Given that his role is to be a CDM and a good one at that I would keep Alvarez & have a player who can give us some dynamism with him, shame DM didn't want Fofana from Monaco.
  • The priority must be a striker and centre backs, probably loans as Potter will need time to assess the squad including players we have out on loan

We'll get Aguerd back in the summer as his loan deal does not include am option to buy and its unlikely Real Sociedad will meet the £25m price tag

Similarly there's no option/obligation to buy on JWP's deal and Cornet can't get into the squad

Zouma's loan does have an obligation to buy so very little chance he';ll be back
