West Ham v Crystal Palace - Saturday 18 January @ 3pm

edited January 15 in Match Threads
So after a 3-2 win in Potter's 1st PL game we go on to another London derby v Palace.

Hoping that the "knock" to Kudus was minor and no further injuries.

We allowed Fulham a number of chances, but fortunately they were misfiring...Apart from their 2 " cross/goals...."

Referee appointed for the game:

West Ham United v Crystal Palace FC
Referee: Bramall, Thomas
Assistant Referee: Hussin, Ian
Assistant Referee: Mainwaring, James
Fourth Official: Langford, Oliver
Video Assistant Referee: Chilowicz, Alex
Additional Video Assistant Referee: Wilkes, Matthew

  • Perhaps worth noting that Trevor Chalobah, who has started 14 times for Palace this season, was recalled by Chelsea today. Palace have started with three at the back for every game this season, with Chalobah starting alongside Marc Guehi and Maxence Lacroix. It seems likely that Chris Richards would start in place of Chalobah, given he's basically the only other CB that Glasner has used this season.
  • Fabiański
    Wan-Bissaka - Mavropanos - Kilman - Emerson
    Álvarez - Rodríguez
    Kudus - Souček - Soler
    Paquetá

Same again with what we have available.
  • Summerville with luck could be on the bench

Potter said in today's presser that he's hopeful, but "the game may come too soon".

Areola, Todibo, and Bowen are not expected to be available, and obviously Füllkrug and Antonio are both likely to be out for the foreseeable future.
  • I really doubt, unfortunately, Antonio will ever play again.

For us, yeah, I tend to agree. He's out of contract in the summer and even without the accident I don't think he'd shown enough this season to deserve another one. There's an argument for keeping him on in some capacity to help in his recovery (as a man rather than as a player), but given that he doesn't live locally (is he in/near Manchester still?) I'm not sure that's even really worth his or our while given he's unlikely to play at a decent level again.

  • Given his service, it would be shameful if we didn’t extend his deal regardless of the injury.
  • 10 years. Top scorer in PL for us.

Whilst I get what you're saying, this is a person who is likely being paid in excess of £5m a year for his service and will have been paid tens of millions of pounds in his time with us; as a club we don't owe him a thing. In addition there's the fact that I don't believe he lives locally, so I'm not sure it would be hugely to his benefit to have a lengthy commute just to do rehab, once his contract is over.

He's been amply rewarded for his time with us; there's absolutely no shame in releasing him at the end of the season. I'd much prefer any money that would be spent in such a way being used to preserve the concessions that the club is determined to remove for supporters who aren't earning 1% of what Antonio is getting paid.
  • After all the references to ‘family club’ - I don’t think we could call ourselves that if we don’t stand by his recovery.
  • I don't know if he really lives in MCR. I know he bought a house there but can't believe he commutes every day to East London. He must have a home locally. Also, he's separated (?divorced) from his wife so isn't it more likely the MCR house is where she and the kids live?
  • I reckon you just need to look at what Sir Jim Ratcliffe has done at Manchester United since he took over to see how modern football owners view anything to do with sentiment. Not that I am saying that attitude is correct 👍.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this then I think, he's up and about on crutches, so it's not like he's in critical condition. As I said, personally I think he would have been struggling to earn a new contract without the accident, so why spend money on a guy who has been very well paid to do a job which now he no longer can do?

It's not like the old days where footballers had to find a way to support themselves for 30 or 40 years at the end of a career; he's likely earned well in excess of £20m from playing for us so, given he's up and about, it's hard to feel too sorry for him from a financial point of view. The money from a new contract for him can definitely be much better spent within the club imo.

You mean the references by Brady and co? The same Brady and co who are looking to price kids and pensioners out of the club?

I just remember reading stuff about him travelling back and forth sleeping in the back of a van, maybe that's not the case any longer. By all means let him continue to rehab with us if he wants to, should he still need to come June, but, given how well rewarded he's been for his service over the years, I don't see any need to give him a new contract "for old times' sake".

  • So much depends on his prognosis- if this is truly a career ending injury then he surely cannot expect the club to extend or renew his contract as a player, however, the club owe a duty of care to him and a moral obligation to extend some sort of non playing contract ensuring he has access to medical and rehabilitation/training facilities so that he can recover as fully as possible.

His progress can then be monitored and in the event that it looks like he can make a comeback, I am sure an appropriate clause can be inserted to facilitate that eventuality.

Was talking more about Potter’s references
  • If Antonio is not able to play football again, then I am all for us supporting his recovery by finding him a role at the club. He deserves our support.
However, giving an extension to his playing contract if he cannot play again is not right.

I hope Antonio does recover and play football again for us though. He has been fantastic.

I’m not arguing, but isn’t this a general “UK/ World” problem, everything there days are so expensive and becoming unaffordable for many people, just saying 👍🏻⚒️

I think it's referring to a point I made that the club are removing season ticket concessions in certain bands of seats around the ground.

I understand, perhaps a little like the government scraping the “energy bonus “ to many pensioners… Not that I want a political debate! As I’m not clued up on it living where I do, just what I read online etc….Sounds a bit similar, but I’m guessing people will say nothing like it 🤣🤣🤣🤣
  • In case anyone does want to continue political chat, I’d suggest that whoever chooses to starts a new thread. Much of this match thread has had nothing to do with the match so far!

Palace have a good away record, they’ve only lost one in the last eight and that was at the Emirates in the Carabao Cup.

Their injury list is remarkably short, of the 22 squad players who’ve featured this season only Adam Wharton is unavailable

After our 2-0 win at Selhurst Park they signed Eddie Nketiah (£25m) but he’s only scored two goals in the Carabao with just 6 EPL starts and the last was against Forest back in October.

A more successful deadline day signing was CB 24yo Maxence Lacroix from Wolfsburg (£18m) who has started all 18 EPL games since joining

Trevor Cabolah has been recalled from his loan by Chelsea

Not a lot of tinkering from Glasner, five players have started the last five Premier Leaguegames, another six players have started four out of the last five.

    Most likely starting XI

    Henderson
    Richards Lacroix Guehl
    Mitchel Lerma Hughes Munoz
    Sarr Eze
    Mateta

Mateta is top scorer with 9 in all competitions and two in a row (Chelsea H, Leicester A, he stayed on the bench against Stockport)
  • Lerma sick, most likely replacement would be Cheick Doucoure.

Ismaïla Sarr will face a late fitness test, Daichi Kamada most likely option
  • This is a big weekend regard our part of the table. Should we be able to take three points it will put us five points clear of Palace, should we lose however they will overtake us.

Brentford play Liverpool and should they lose we could overtake them also, whilst we also hope Moyes enjoys his bounce effect against Spurs this weekend. Add to this Man Utd Vs Brighton and we could improve our lot in the middle of the table quite a bit this weekend.

I think our fixture has a draw written all over it however, which wouldn't be terrible considering our injuries.
  • Not quite sure what the issue is with Areola; he seems to train and then not be in the squad?
  • candbsky, If I could I would like both teams to lose but as it's Everton I really hope Moyes doesn't get an enjoyable bounce effect and I don't feel I am alone in that.
  • candbsky, If I could I would like both teams to lose but as it's Everton I really hope Moyes doesn't get an enjoyable bounce effect and I don't feel I am alone in that.

    But Fortune it's Spurs, Surely!!!!

I would quite like to see Everton go down as they have dodged it recently but against Spurs.... Surely!

Just think Harry Kane going down when his sock is brushed, Son's silly make a box with his fingers goal celebration, delusional fans, Daniel Levy, Ossie's dream, Chas n Dave, taking Carrick, Kanoute and Paul Allen.
  • Spurs are like us in that neither team has an owner who will invest the type of amount of money to make them real contenders in the EPL when possibly they could.

I would reply candbsky it's Everton, surely!!!!
