Not 1 chance really created, this must have been Palace's easiest 3 points, we gave their keeper nothing to be concerned about..Oh well, at least we got a fortunate 3 points in the week.....

    New manager. Same result.

Give him a chance. The squads bare bones and he’s only been here five minutes.
  • One of our worst performances this season.
  • @alderz, Yes but did he pick an attacking line up when we were playing at home, too much respecting the point?

Watching the first half reminded me that I need to sort out my sock drawer. Fortunately my stream agreed with me and gave up the ghost for the second half.
  • Rubbish game. The usual story, can't defend, can't create, can't score. Too many tippy-tappy square and backward passes suggesting lack of confidence and movement.

Players earn more in a day compared what many fans earn in a year. You can change managers, but result is the same. Do they not practice passing, running off the ball? Kudus tried but straight away was surrounded by three/four Palace players. I can't recall WHU having any shots at goal and Mavropanos all at sea, always likely to make errors.
  • A reminder that we had three days of training post Fulham. Three days of training before that too. That’s all he’s had to work with the squad on patterns of play.
  • We had 4 shots, none on target whereas they had 11 with 7 on target. We barely got out of our half in the first half and didn’t move forwards until about the 75th minute.
We may be down to bare bones but it’s obvious those bare bones are not good enough for the most part.
We don’t have one decent defender and I’m baffled as to why we spent so much on Kilman who is easily beaten to the ball or hesitates all the time.
Palace had obviously done their homework and saw we were a soft touch after the Fulham game and knew we wouldn’t bother them.
We are very lucky that there are at least three very poor teams in this league and we have a bit of a cushion.
  • I actually think that Potter learned a lot today, we were set up very defensively from the outset and it resulted in a fairly solid but totally uninspiring 45mins.

After going down we had to change as we had not shown anything going forward and Potter recognized that and shook the team up.

We clearly need Bowen back and a new threat up top, Mavropanos is simply not PL quality, Alverez and Guido make a ponderous defensive midfield but we have some youngsters that show promise, I like Scarles and I would like to see more of Guilherme and IMO, Soler deserves a longer run

My concern is that it is fine to play from the back but you also have to take responsibility and try to play a positive pass rather than just passively pass it backwards and sideways when confronted by anyone - it just encourages the press.

    But what do I know
  • That was as poor as we have been, only mitigation is that it's also as injury hit as we have been. Tactically it seemed we played park the bus and hope for the best, they played crowd Kudus if he gets the ball as without him we have no threat. That was pretty much it as they scored then coasted without threat. Starting without Soler, a five man defence and three DM's against a team lower than you is about as negative as any home performance I can recall.

Regarding Kilman I quite like him as a signing as he is comfortable on the ball, he is not however a rock solid, read the game well, commanding centre half as Zouma was, and Ogbonna before him. I think Tobido was that signing and like others it has not yet worked out. Alongside a commanding centre half Kilman would be perfect, alongside Mavro is another thing altogether. Mavro just needs to be replacedas he is not and has never been Premier standard. In his defence he was meant to be a third/fourth choice back up not a starter.

There is work to do, and we must be active now in this window as much as we would prefer not to be. It seems Lopetgui/Tim have wasted a lot of money potentially so I just hope there is some left.

  • We’ve not won a game this season when conceding first, we’ve conceded in the first 15 minutes of the second half 10 times this season only Leicester being worse.
I’m sick and tired of reading match reports of our games in the media describing us as woeful, abysmal and clueless.
  • I agree that Potter would have learned a lot today, sadly he will realise what he's got available at the moment with all our injuries, doesn't seem enough.
We IMO need at least 2 players in this window....
  • I didn't see it all but this game has made me realise I don't like many players in our squad. Not very many that I'd be sad to see moved on. Maybe I'm just feeling that way because we're a bit rubbish at the moment

Don't read them! You'll feel so much happier and, as a bonus, you'll have more free time to do something you enjoy :-)

I don’t read them, it’s the headlines that shout it out. I’m waiting for the OS to say it soon.
  • Well if he didn’t know before our Graham certainly does now. It’s a bit of a job innit mate?
Still, you’ll probably get another few games before the bricks start coming your way.
You’ll probably find Moysy’s tin hat in that “open as when required “ cupboard.
    Good luck mate.👍⚒️

It works in the transfer thread, but is relevant here as it highlights the current state of the squad.

edit: your comment will remain relevant while this match thread will not.

    I've copied your comment over.
  • At the moment we must be the worst team to watch in the Premier League.

  • I’m sick and tired of reading match reports of our games in the media describing us as woeful, abysmal and clueless.

Specially as you do it so well. 😉
  • Potter claiming today was a game too far as we were tired and couldn’t match Palace’s intensity.
We played Tuesday and they played Wednesday so had an extra day to recover. Seems a lame excuse or a badly worded one
  • Yeah, but Leicester though. (We played Fulham.)

And the previous game they played Stockport County at home. We played Villa away.

I'd say our games were more demanding.

Look at the bigger picture for a more accurate view.

I wouldn’t diss Leicester. We only lasted 70 minutes against them.
Regardless of who played who I still think it’s not good to say we couldn’t keep up with them because we were tired. Just admit we were disappointingly poor and just didn’t play well.
Maybe if we tried once in a while to go on the front foot we wouldn’t be chasing around all the time.

It just shows you 1) our squad is not very good (even when all fit) & 2) the players need to do more - yet lots have been woefully poor under Moyes, Lop & now Potter.

He has a lot of work to do & we just have to hope we get enough points to stay clear of being dragged into a relegation fight. The real job starts in the summer & next season but we need to be in the PL for it.
  • We were sixth after 22 games last season & had 36 points.
  • Palace are a good side and I am a big fan of the coach. I think they will become a Fulham/ Brighton level if they keep him. They are better than their parts even now.

I can't see us being relegated and regardless of any change of manager we had we will finish between 13-17 in my view without ever really getting involved in a relegation scrap. The problem is it's such a waste of a season and disappointment when we went into the market for a new manager and gave him a big wad of cash to strengthen the squad and we have failed to do so and are playing pretty poor stuff.

Lets hope this window is used well and that when key players return we can use the rest of this season to settle in a side which can do better next season.

    So.... your point?

    We should have kept Moyes?

I think I remember you pushing back against the 'Moyes Out' voices.

Or, maybe not, my memory is not as good as it used to be.

Sorry, how does a poor performance with a bunch of missing players show that a fully fit squad is not very good? That’s like saying that you can tell how good a car is by how well it drives with a wheel missing.

The last 21 games I used to judge that.

We did have several players missing, but the whole first choice back four played, as did Kudus, Paquetá, Souček, Álvarez. So we were missing - Bowen & a striker?

Summerville hasn’t started much all season so he can’t now be a key first 11 player after one half of football.

Ultimately it was a poor game - decided by the fact they had a fit, in form forward, and we didn’t. But as I said, the players that did play for us 8/9 of which would be in our first choice 11 (on paper), let the club down (again).

Ah yes. Our famously fit squad from the last 21 games.

Personally, I feel that the best time to judge the squad will be after they’ve worked with Potter for a while. Maybe they weren’t a great squad for Lopetegui. Maybe they’ll be one for Potter. The absolutist statements don’t really serve anyone, IMO.
