I feel like the Steidten exit is strange. Essentially, the board are saying the manager was a poor hire, and the director was a bid hire. Which means they got everything wrong.
If Steidten is responsible for recruitment, and he's been sacked, then presumably that is an admission that the recruitment has been bad. But if the recruitment has been bad, then Lopetegui has been let down by poor recruitment.
If Lopetegui is at fault, then presumably that means he's not done a good enough job with the signings. Which seems like it's not much to do with Steidten and his areas of responsibility.
To say that both Steidten and Lopetegui have performed to such a level that they should be sacked, is essentially just saying that the board have failed in their responsibilities. I know that they're saying "Potter wants this other guy", but that feels a convenient excuse, to me.
It's either "Can't afford him, so we'll offer 75% of the asking price, or offer a loan deal when he gets injured", or "We'll take an injury-prone 35-year-old unproven in the Premier League for a club record fee!" There is no middle ground.

It's hard to get an accurate view and we are left with press reports that appear at various stages but Steidten's fate seems to be linked to Lopetguis poor performance and Potters appointment. We would need to know who wanted Lopetgui? The reports at the time were that Tim didn't but Sullivan did due to him interviewing well. We then need know who's signings were down to who. I recall at the time of Tim being appointed it was mentioned that we wanted someone in his position that would guide the clubs recruitment and wasn't linked to managers who obviously come and go, so a long term appointment, yet now he seems to have gone as Potter has his own man.

Bowen, Soucek, Coufal, AWB etc. etc. etc.?
IronHerb, my memory is shocking these days. How many of those players were bought as strikers?
