  • The trouble is that there is no 'pool' of players in the 50 over game since the ECB threw it away to make way for the ludicrous 100. The 50 over county tournament is a 2nd XI event played when the 100 is on,
  • England win the toss and are batting in what is effectively a dead rubber; as long as South Africa avoid losing by 207 runs (I think was the figure mentioned) then they'll progress, although I guess a win will change who plays who in the semi finals.
  • Salt fails again, gone in the first over. He needs to realise that 50 over cricket isn't the same as 20 over cricket.

And Smith fails again, for a duck.
  • Duckett goes as well in just the 7th over.

    All out for 179. Dreadful.
  • South Africa knock the runs off with more than 20 overs to spare.

First Test of the summer today, against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge. Zimbabwe win the toss and elect to field.

England give a debut to Essex fast bowler Sam Cook.

Just realised it's a 4 day Test, I really don't like them tbh.
  • 130 without loss at lunch off 26 overs.
  • A ton for Duckett, 100 off 100 balls, England 165-0.
  • Duckett goes for 140, Crawley still there on 78, 231-1.
  • Another good session, 295-1 at tea.
  • Crawley reaches three figures as well, off 145 balls.
  • Crawley goes for 124 off 171 balls, England 368-2.
  • A third ton, this one for Pope, 103 off 109 balls. 401-2.
  • Root goes for just 34, 479-3.
  • 498-3 at the close, off just 88 overs.
  • As it's a 4 day Test, I half expected an overnight declaration, but we've batted on. Pope goes for 171, clearly nicking one and caught behind, but bizarrely he reviews it. Stokes comes in at 502-4.
  • Stokes goes for 9 off 12 balls, but meanwhile Brook has accelerated and is on 45 off 44 balls. 548-5.
  • Smith gets a life on 4 with the score on quintuple Nelson (555), when the keeper drops a relatively straightforward catch. Meanwhile Brook reaches 50 off 48 balls.
  • Brook goes a couple of balls later and England declare on 565-6.
  • Zimbabwe reach 73-1 at lunch, with Sam Cook taking his first Test wicket, caught at second slip by Brook.
  • Bashir makes the breakthrough after lunch, Brook taking a low catch at slip. 96-2.
  • 156-3, Bashir gets his second.
  • Bashir puts down a caught and bowled chance, and, to make matters worse, hurts himself in the process (cut a finger maybe) and has to leave the field mid-over. Stokes comes on to finish it, his first bowl in 5 months.

And nearly has a wicket, as Root drops a sitter at first slip.
  • Stokes gets a wicket in his first full over, a simple caught behind by Smith, 187-4.
  • Stokes gets another, 199-5.
  • 210-5 at tea.
  • A no-ball thwarts a brilliant bit of captaincy and a superb catch by Pope; Stokes brought Pope to short leg and the very next ball popped up to be snatched by Pope, but alas Tongue had overstepped and Bennett, who was put down by Root on 89, gets another life on 139.
