Buttler goes as he tries to accelerate, 23 off 21 balls. 280-5 off 41 overs.
  • Livingstone goes for just 14 off 17 balls, 316-6 with just 20 balls left.
  • Duckett goes for 165 off 143 balls. 322-7 with 16 balls left.
  • Carse goes for 8 off 7 balls, 338-8 with just 4 balls remaining.
  • England finish on 351-8. A decent score, but can't help feeling it's at least 20-30 runs short of a truly competitive total on a very flat wicket in a smallish ground with a fast outfield.

We need a good performance from our bowlers, an it's crucial to take wickets early and regularly.
  • Archer gets Head with a good caught and bowled, 21-1.
  • And now Wood gets the cheat Steve Smith caught at slip for just 5.
  • Rashid puts down a toughish caught and bowled chance with his very first ball; Short gets a life.
  • Australia reach 103-2 off the first 15 overs, just 5 runs behind England at the same stage. Carse is expensive though, going at more than 9 runs an over, and we've yet to see Livingstone or Root who will presumably need to make up at least 10 overs between them given that we're only playing 4 front line bowlers.
  • A couple of good overs from Rashid and Livingstone builds the pressure, and Labuschagne is caught by Buttler off Rashid. 122-3.
  • Livingstone takes a good caught and bowled to remove Short for 63. 136-4.
  • Archer drops an absolute sitter off Rashid, Australia 250-4, needing 102 off 12 overs.
  • England finish on 351-8. A decent score, but can't help feeling it's at least 20-30 runs short of a truly competitive total on a very flat wicket in a smallish ground with a fast outfield.

And so it proved, with Australia winning with 15 balls to spare. England weren't helped by a poor bowling display by Carse who went for 69 in just 7 overs, and the dreadful drop by Archer when Australia still needed 104 off 12 overs.

  • England take on Afghanistan today in a must win match, Afghanistan win the toss and are batting, despite the possibility of dew helping batting in the second innings.
  • A good start by England, Afghanistan are 39-3 at the end of the first powerplay, Archer with all 3 wickets. The only minus is that Wood needed treatment during his 4th over, and, although he managed to complete the over, he left the field afterwards which could be problematic later on should Afghanistan bat through and there must be concerns about his fitness for the rest of the tournament.
  • A bit of an indifferent display in the fireld by England after that first 10 overs as Afghanistan reach 325-7, including 113 off the final 10 overs. This is the ground that England's 351 was easily chased down by Australia on Saturday, so scoring isn't too difficult but there's undoubtedly going to be a lot more pressure on England now.
  • Salt goes cheaply again, scoring just 12. 19-1.
  • Poor by Smith, goes for just 9. 30-2.
  • England reach 60-2 after the first 10 overs, so well ahead of what Afghanistan managed, but behind the required run rate.
  • Duckett goes for 38, 98-3.
  • Brook goes for 25 with a really poor shot, 133-4.
  • Buttler goes for 38, never really got going despite a couple of 6s. 216-5.
  • Livingstone goes for just 10, we're in real trouble now with 93 still needed. 233-6.
  • Ton up for Joe Root, but the worry is that, like Duckett on Saturday against Australia, it may be in vain.

Root goes for 120, probably as much down to fatigue as anything. 39 more needed off just 25 balls. Archer joins Jamie Overton at the crease.

Overton goes for 32. England need 17 off 13 balls as Adil Rashid joins Archer, with only Mark Wood, who had to leave the field through injury during Afghanistan's innings, to come
  • Archer goes for a big one but it's too high and without the required distance. He's gone for 14, England are 313-9 and need 13 off just 7 balls.
  • 317 all out. Another poor white ball display by England.
  • Buttler is stepping down as captain after the dead rubber against South Africa tomorrow.

  • I think Buttler still has plenty to offer as a player, but have never been impressed by his captaincy. However, no natural leaders in the White Ball squads. I'd prefer Harry Brook to be left to focus on his batting rather than take on the added responsibility.
