All this talk of using the Rice money on 2 or 3 quality players is pie in the sky. Currently as I understand it Arsenal have made the only offer at £80M over 4 years ie £20M per year. Are we going to offer £6-7M on 2 or 3 players or try to do it in hire purchase like Arsenal

Most deals have a structure not too dissimilar to the one you've outlined, although I've heard the Arsenal offer was even worse and was over 6 years. Realistically we're not going to accept an offer of £80m, it's much more likely to be £100m or thereabouts, and regardless of the payment structure there's no way we shouldn't get at least 2 quality players in for "the Rice money".
I think Scamacca did show a good attitude when played but also looked a little frustrated as being a lone striker doesn't suit him.
My approach would be if he is happy to stay then we try ad use him more effectively, should he really want to leave then we say ok as long as we can get very near what we laid out for him, as I see no reason his value has gone down. Were I to loan him I would want a very high fee for the loan.
Billy Sharp, age 37, will be released by Sheffield United when his contract ends this summer, 18 years, 7 months and 17 days after he made his first team debut for the Blades against Watford.
He played for Rushden and Diamonds, Scunthorpe, Sheffield United again, Doncaster Rovers, Southampton, Nottingham Forest, Reading, Doncaster again, Leeds and finally back to Sheffield United
Elsewhere Junior Stanislas (33) is leaving Bournemouth and Andros Townsend (31) is leaving Everton
Palinha would be a very good signing. He’s got a year behind him in the PL & I think he was up there with Declan on all the key DM stats last season. Basically replacing Dec with the next best DM, statistically. You are also signing a teams best player, who finished top half, so taking a prime asset instead of a bench player.
We then need to find a player who offers the other parts that Dec does, so that passing ability, driving from deep & running with the ball. I don’t think Ward-Prowse is the answer, personally. I can see why he would be considered; English, PL experienced, set-piece ability, good passer (but not progressive, more possession-based), gets around 5-10 goals. I just don’t see him as dynamic enough to replace Dec’s attributes. Also, we need his leadership in the middle of the park, in the same way Sam signed Nolan purely for that reason alone, plus his chicken dancing.
The only alternative if we sign Ward-Prowse is if Paqueta continues to improve next season, as we know he can drive with the ball, pass the ball progressively & he is a lot more dynamic & robust.
I still feel this could work, with the identified positions filled with quality:
I didn’t watch as much football this season as usual so haven’t seen a massive amount of Palinha but he sounds like he might fit well.
My question though is why he would leave when Fulham did pretty well last season and why Fulham would sell when they’d probably back themselves to build on next season and either be above us or challenging us?
It feels like a deal that would maybe cost more than it should because of that but maybe there’s some other factor that opens it all up.
Indeed. I don't see why Fulham would let Palhinha leave after just one season and with another four years on his contract
He played more minutes than any other Fulham player and started every PL game he was available (missed three games suspended - picked up 14 yellow cards in 35 games)
Quick comparison for those that like them! Based on last season Palinha 14 yellow cards - Rice 5, Alvarez 10, Lavia 9 & Fofana four with 2 Reds. If anything it shows that he does get stuck in which if we can partner him with a couple of creative players could work well but is his price £50 million?
I agree with a lot of what Luke said, but I also do like Ward-Prowse and think he'd be a solid addition too. I guess my worry with the idea of Fornals, Paqueta & Palhinha would be that - despite Soucek's poor form - Fornals never played CM for us at all last season. So I'm not sure why, after taking out our best midfielder, Moyes would think it's the time to experiment with someone he doesn't seem to see as a CM.
But, yes, Ward-Prowse is not like Rice. He's not a driving midfielder, he doesn't play many progressive passes. He's a Mark Noble type of midfielder. I just want his set pieces though.

But if he does come he must ditch that 'golf shot' celebration when celebrating a goal, so yesterday!!
I do feel Ward-Prowse is more a Mark Noble replacement, than a Rice one.
Palinha may find the convenience of staying in London, the increased wage we’d be able to offer & the chance of Europa League football, an attractive proposition.
The old classic, what makes you more attractive, winning silverware or finishing 10th.
We have gone through seasons with a real ponderous midfield: Sanchez, Snodgrass, Nolan, Noble (to a degree), Soucek, Taylor, as well as some of those did for us. The PL requires a real dynamic midfield these days, most important areas now are dynamic full-backs and midfields.
I don't want to get the site into trouble with rumours and speculation, but there are possible concerns about an allegation of a historic crime against someone likely to be heavily involved in our transfer business this summer.
There were suggestions yesterday that a story was likely to break this week, and apparently rumours are spreading on Twitter this morning. More details can be found on the transfer thread on KUMB if anyone wants to see more.
I think it's best we leave it off here until there's something more. There is an article in the Mail about someone being questioned about a very serious crime but doesn't mention any club. We don't really want to go about naming people and it looks like KUMB have deleted the name as well. We've seen it before with players, when news of a player has been arrested ends up with everyone speculating about who it might be and throwing names out there, often because they have an agenda.
I ventured over to Kumb to see what this was about. And I must say it makes you appreciate this site even more 👍🏻 Grey💔, Mrs G, Ald and Outcast thank you all for your sterling work on this site! And also for keeping it ad free 😀
I only posted because the situation could affect the club, but obviously I didn't want to cause problems for this site, that's why I was pretty vague. Even unfounded allegations could provide a serious distraction during a very important time of year.

Townsend was commentating on C4's Malta v England coverage so looks like he might be hanging up his boots.

Areola (long-term)
RB - Zouma - Aguerd - Emerson
Paqueta - Palinha - Fornals
Bowen - ST - LW
I would rather try Fornals as a LCM than sign a player like Ward-Prowse.
