  • Yeah, if it was a case of Lingard giving us his word and then going back on it when Forest threw notes at him, then maybe it was 'nailed on' up to that point.
  • Did Moyes think it was nailed on? I'm not so sure. He's experienced enough to know transfers are a minefield and after all Lingard was sitting on our offer for a long time.

KUMB ITK is saying at least two more signings, and maybe a third on loan.

I'm assuming the loan would be for a CB, to cover Aguerd's injury.

So Kostic/Cornet, Onana and, say, Nat Phillips? That'll be another £50m-ish, some of which will presumably be recouped from the Diop sale.

Not sure how much I trust this ITK though; they did say Lingard was "nailed on" to sign for us and look how that one panned out.

But I can't see Moyes signing too many more, so three sounds about right.

Ex said Lingard’s camp had verbally confirmed to the club he’d he signing, before he was contacted by Forest ahead of his one year loan.

I’ll say this very quietly so I don’t jinx it but if we actually signed Scamacca. Kostic and Zielinski we might, MIGHT finally end our long wait for a win over Brighton.

    😁
  • Steady on!
  • So we currently have 21 (what I would call) first team players.

Kostić & Zieliński are now the ones being targeted. Onana not completely ruled out.
  • edited July 2022
Zieliński has 6 goals & 5 assists in a full season in Serie A for Napoli. Benrahma has 8 goals & 6 assists in less games in the PL. Is Zieliński worth €40m?

The way I see it is we need a core of 22 players; two good options in each position. Currently we have:

    GK: Areola/Fab
    RB: Coufal/Johnson
    LB: Cresswell/Johnson
    RCB: Zouma/Dawson
    LCB: Aguerd/Ogbonna(?)
    CM: Rice/Downes
    CM: Soucek/Lanzini
    RW: Bowen/Antonio
    AM: Fornals/Vlasic
    LW: Benrahma/Masuaku
    ST: Scamacca/Antonio

So we have Antonio covering two positions and Johnson covering two positions. So I think we need a LB and RW/ST to balance the squad a bit more as a minimum, and ideally a more Soucek-esque option in midfield and an upgrade on Masuaku, too.

    I think we play more a 4-3-3 than a 4-2-3-1.

    Fabianski
    Coufal - Zouma - Aguerd - Cresswell
    Rice - Souček - Fornals/Lanzini
    Bowen - Benrahma
    Antonio

I don’t think Moyes wants Benrahma as the LW option of the front 3, hence the chase for Lingard to fill that position. Replacing Lingard for Benrahama in that 11 above would have been Moyes’ perfect side.

Most of the stats reports I've seen about Zielinski suggest he's more of a deep midfielder. For Poland he sits in CM and passes from there, for Napoli he pushes on slightly but stays out of the box and passes the ball. I think Benrahma and Zielinski aren't comparable, as the role of a wide forward these days is to get in the box and get goals.
  • At the height of the Broja transfer spec his ownership went up a whopping .7% on FF

    Now down by .4%

The man with the golden boot isn’t on there yet
  • I said , when the window opened, that we wouldn't sign more than 4 players (although like everyone I wanted more).
I just didn't believe the money to make many more would be available.
I must admit I'm pleased we're still being linked to decent looking signings and if they come to fruition then the owners should be applauded for FINALLY coughing up.

NO I would rather we used that type of money to get someone else. Is he the creative midfielder we need as he doesn't look to be the CDM we are looking for either?

  • I think Zielinski would effectively be the Lingard alternative. An intelligent player who can break the lines. A more effective Lanzini, if you like.

We're pretty effective on the break, but when we have to break teams down, we struggle. From what I've read of Zielinski, he should be able to help us in that respect.

Rather than actual assists, I'd be interested to know what his chances created stats are; assists are generally dependant on how good your strikers are and aren't always a good reflection.

I’ve recently discovered a website called FBRef that has really good stats reports. https://fbref.com/en/players/a5296e55/scout/365_euro/Piotr-Zielinski-Scouting-Report

Apparently he has 3.8 shot creating actions per 90. Shot creating actions are basically any action (dribble, pass, cross, tackle, whatever) that happens within two actions of a shot. i.e. if you pass the ball out wide, it gets crossed, then there’s a shot.
  • The simplistic thing is that he wasnt just picked out of a hat for that money. They must see him as a good piece of the puzzle. Ooooh and I really hope money sways Kostic and we get him.

I must admit, I'm not sure how he'll fit into our system. If we play 4-2-3-1 (Moyes's usual preference over the last couple of years), he doesn't seem to fit (physically) into the "2", but most of the stuff I've read is that he plays deeper than an ACM (or the middle of our "3").

Maybe Moyes sees him as playing the former role against weaker teams that sit back more, and the latter against teams where we need the defensive pairing of Rice and Soucek behind him.

  • Transfermarkt has him primarily as an advanved CM, so he can probably play ahead of a midfield two or between them in a three:

I haven't seen enough of him to know for sure, but it sounds like he basically an upgraded Lanzini.
  • edited July 2022
So we have Fornals, Lanzini & Vlašić for that role. Not sure he’s the priority player we need.
  • Unless we're prepared to let Vlasic and Lanzini go.
  • edited July 2022
Vlašić is young. 24? He’s got a lot more to offer. He had a hard season last year with limited chances to play, especially in his preferred position. He’s had a positive pre-season &, having spent £25m-£30m on him, we aren’t getting that back. So other than loaning him or selling him for a loss, it makes sense to try & get more out of him this season. Fornals is a vital cog in the side. Lanzini could be allowed to move on but I don’t see it.

Signing players, barely playing them, selling for a loss…that’s not a great business model.
  • I'm not advocating it, just saying that might be Moyes’s thinking.

The alternative is that Zielinski will be considered a No8 and play alongside Rice or Soucek in a two.
  • Another day without a new signing.😡
  • Not transfer news but apparently Sebastian Haller has had surgery to remove a testicular tumour.
He will be out of football for a few months and I’m sure we all wish him well.
  • Kostic has just scored for EF in a friendly so no imminent deal.
  • except his price has gone up by a euro or two
