  • I would like two strikers so we can switch to two upfront if we need a goal when chasing the game. We looked a bit one dimensonal at times last season be nice to be able to change up how we play at times

Yep, different options are so important. Moyes has experimented with a back five in the past, and indeed on Saturday, so if we get Kostic/Cornet we could change to 3-5-2 and go with two out-and-out strikers.

I want us to have a bench that contains genuine game-changing options that Moyes actually trusts.
  • I don't want to watch my striker have five airshots in front of goal or fail to beat a keeper 1 on 1 majority of the time. And yes, I'd prefer Scamacca with 16 league goals against Antonio with 10 league goals and 8 league assists last season.

'We play with a striker who gets more assists than goals, currently.'

I would always prefer a striker who has more goals than assists, so Antonio needs replacing in that role.

Depends if you think offering 20 goal moments (via assists & goals) is better than 14 goals?
Antonio scored 10 goals in the league, and he missed 10 big chances, with a conversion rate of 12%. Scamacca scored 16, missed 5, conversion rate of 20%. I think there#s evidence that says Scamacca is a better finisher. Sofascore also has them both as having strengths in their 'anchor play' which is basically hold up.

If we want to play on the counter then maybe Scamacca isn't right. But there were a lot of games last year where we weren't able to play on the counter, so we need someone who can hold the ball up, link play and take chances.
  • He'll arrive this afternoon and have his medical tomorrow, don't worry, that information didn't come from my ex ITK. Hahaha

I said it before all the other IDK, just saying 😗

I have seen Antonio played wide left in a few of the pre-season games as well as last season. Could that be an option to accommodate both him & Scamacca?

    Areola
    Coufal - Zouma - Aguerd - Cresswell
    Soucek - Rice
    Bowen - Fornals - Antonio
    Scamacca

Fabianski, Dawson, Ogbonna, Johnson, Masuaku, Downes, Lanzini, Vlasic, Benrahma
  • Onana has put a couple of things on his Insta stories about the need for patience.

Not necessarily about us, or maybe football at all, but it does kind of tie in with the rumoured situation.
  • With the Aguerd news, and suggestions that we're now prepared to let Diop go, I'm assuming we might be back in for another centre back.

Currently we only have Zouma fit. Dawson might be back for the Lens game, but has been carrying an injury, and Ogbonna has yet to complete 90 minutes in his comeback.

Feels like a bit of a risk going into the season with injury doubts over three of our four CBs.
  • Is there anything more West Ham than finally signing a new striker to then find out that your £30m centre back has had to have surgery on an injury.

    The Lord giveth...

Apparently Ex said on the podcast it’s minor surgery & he’ll be back after a couple of league games.

So two league games and the two ECL qualifiers, presumably. Even that's a lot of football with one centre back.

Hopefully Dawson is back for Lens, but he's had no pre-season to speak of. Do you think Johnson is good enough to play in a two?
  • I read somewhere Dawson would have played through the injury but has a family member, his son I think, who is unwell so wasn't played.
  • You can't buy a new player every time someone gets injured just cos the transfer window is open.

Well, you can. Might not make great business sense, but you can.

It's more than Aguerd's injury, though; if Diop is sold we're down to four CBs. Enough on paper, but if there are doubts over Ogbonna then we may only have three genuine options for the season.

I can't see Moyes trusting Baptiste, so if there are issues with Og then we may need to move Rice or Johnson to CB and potentially weaken other areas on the pitch.

Ex did say that we had someone lined up if we sold Diop, so I guess we'll see what happens.

Please stop coming up with reasonable comments Mrs Grey.

  • OCS, if Ogbonna's not trusted, then let's got rid. That is for me a more pressing issue than trying to buy cover for a new signing who's got an injury.

Yeah, I'm not advocating signing a new centre back to cover Aguerd's injury. I said in light of the injury and Diop's sale.

Ogbonna’s last game was 64 minutes with the U23s. We have one game left. Anybody thinking he’ll be in a position to start against City is mistaken. Dawson hasn’t played any minutes in pre-season since Servette. We have to keep Diop, who also hasn’t played many minutes.

As would any signing, though? Do you think we don’t need a striker?
  • No I do, just reading the general feeling on social media it seems this guy is the answer to all Michail’s failings. He’s not & he’ll have to go some to replace him. I think we all agree we needed another option.
  • I'm not overly into assists for a striker. He's there predominately to score goals. No one remembers Linekers or Cottee's assists. 15 league goals a season will do for me.

I think that happens with pretty much every signing though. Social media is reactionary and hyperbolic. I think most reasonable fans know there are no guarantees.

Anyone else waiting for the deal to be hijacked by someone else?
  • He's already landed at Biggin Hill so no hi-jacking here. ☺️
  • He’s in a London hotel tonight. Guards posted outside his room?
  • If I'm reading correctly that Oggy isnt fit, Dawson has had no preseason and Diop also has had no minutes... Why is this a reason to keep Diop? To keep the others company? If we have Fulham wanting to buy him and he also wont be match fit for the start of the season (and Ex saying we have someone lined up) seems lik a sell to me. Now we all know I hate excessive transfers but it seem like a no brainer to me. We could even loan someone until January for example too.
