West Ham recruitment and general grumbling

Benrahma gives the ball away 3 or 4 times a match which is too much.
He can also create 2 or 3 chances each match.
Swap the stats and I am sure Moyes will be less critical.
  • grumble grumble moan :) I feel better for that
  • I think that players who may have come in January won’t be keen in the summer now.
  • It'll depend where we finish. CL (massive long shot) or EL and we'll stand a chance. No European football will obviously reduce our pull in a big way.

Frustratingly, from what's been said we were only £8m shy of getting Darwin Nunez in January. Given his performances since January, we'll get nowhere near him by the summer.
  • The next transfer is going to be pivotal. We have a significant number of players that will leave and need replacing. We also need a bigger squad
I forecast at least 5 new signings.
  • I really don't think Moyes does himself any favours. When talking about Zouma's injury he said:

"People tend to forget we lost Angelo Ogbonna at the start so all season we’ve had to work and play with that. Aaron is out. It gives us an imbalance of people more comfortable on the left side.”"

We entered the summer window with one left-sided centre back and one left back, and entered the January window with no left-sided centre backs and one left back, yet ended both with no reinforcements in either position.

The imbalance Moyes is complaining about is largely of his own making.
  • Exeter, Apologies but IMHO 5 is on the low side. Replacements needed for GK, LFB/LSD, CH, MID (2), CF (2) that is unless we have a couple of talents in the Academy? Can see cover needed to offset Noble, Yarmo, Diop, Randolph, Fredericks & possibly Ogbonna & Benrahma all leaving in the summer. A very thin squad so ten might be required?
  • All down to dosh at the end of the day. Depends on what we bring in via sales and what the new invester wants to help spend. We're now so near being a consistent top 6 side, it mustn't be passed up or ignored.
  • Fortune,
    I agree, 5 is minimum.
  • Even if we don't lose Rice, we need CM x 2 (Noble retiring, no way Kral stays), LB (needed for a while, no way is Masuaku a PL FB), GK (somehow doubt we keep Areola, and we need to pay for him even if we do), CB (Diop has to be offloaded while we can still get something for him, he's not a top half CB despite the patience we've shown with him), RW (Yarmo, despite a couple of goals recently, isn't suited to the PL and it makes no sense to offer an extension) and a CF which we've needed for 3 transfer windows.

That's 7 who are either leaving, are loans that are ending (not replacing Fredericks as I feel Johnson and Coufal provide adequate cover at RB) or are long term deficiencies in the squad, without even looking to upgrade, for instance, Dawson or Ogbonna who are both getting on, or Vlasic or Benrahma who really don't seem to be particularly rated by the manager.

7 as a bare minimum we need (really, truly need) without losing anyone from the squad we want to keep. How many of those are we likely so see, baring in mind the last 3 windows have seen us effectively add 1 player to our current squad (Zouma is the only addition to the squad in the last 3 windows that is both still here and still getting regular minutes)?

Given how Moyes likes to dither and G&S hate buying early in case a bargain becomes available late on, we could easily be extremely light of players for the first month or 2 of the season while any additions are bought in the last week of the window, brought up to speed and gradually (Moyes really doesn't rush many players into the team) incorporated into the matchday squad.

Really hard to see us not going backwards next season.
  • buffy, I agree with you & people raised their concerns months ago about this issue and that they couldn't see any Premier League club bringing in ten new players in one window especially they way we appear to operate. I best get my boots out of the loft.

The way I look at it, we need a keeper (could be Areola again), full-back (either a RB or a LB as Johnson can cover both), a central midfielder & a striker. We could also do with another wide player/No.10 option.

That’s five signings. It’s not a big deal. Everybody goes on about only having Rice & Soucek; how many games do they miss? None.

But how many games should Soucek have missed? It's one thing being available every week, and quite another to justify playing every week.

We need more than five. I make Buffy right; seven as a minimum. Assuming we activate Areola's option (far from guaranteed though), we still need a LB (Johnson can cover but we need a specialist), a CB (Diop isn't good enough), two CMs (Noble and Kral), a left-sided version of Bowen and at least one striker.

And that's also assuming we don't sell anyone.

Building a squad should be progressive. As it is, the last three windows haven't been good enough so we now need to binge in one window just to stand still.

Poor transfer policy from Moyes and the board, IMO.
  • No chance we sign 7 players in the summer. We haven't signed 7 players in the last 3 windows, I don't think?
  • Preston, Lets hope we break that old habit or we will struggle IMHO.
  • the cynic in me says we put a £70m bid in for Kane and say we offered a club record amount but could not get the deal over the line as our business ,jokes apart, I think we will sign 3 or 4 and hope the kids come through

I don't think we can rely on the kids. Not because they're not good enough - that we just don't know - but because even with our struggles this season they've barely had a look in, so I can't see Moyes suddenly changing his mindset next season.

we cannot, but I fear that maybe a board call, or even worse pay a fortune for Cullen who we let go for peanuts, when a loan would have been smarter
  • Three or four plus a couple of "Frees" like Lingard, Tarkowski and maybe even Origi.

    “Struggles this season “?
We’re 6th in the league, 1/4 finals of the Europa, got to the 1/4 finals of the league cup.

    Yeah proper “struggles’ there.

If you don’t see that as a wonderful achievement for a club like West Ham then I really don’t know what your expectations are tbh.
  • The struggles I'm referring to are with our shortages within the squad. Our struggles to rotate out of form players; our struggles to give players a desperately needed rest; our struggles to have game-changers on the bench.

I think our EL progress has been a huge achievement. As has competing for Europe again with a paper thin squad. Quarter-final of the league Cup isn't that impressive in itself if I'm being honest, but the wins over City and United were good.

But no-one can deny that all of that has been without its struggles.

We moved stadium so we should no longer be classed as "a club like West Ham" whatever that means?.

I expect us to be doing what we have over the last few seasons, challenging for European qualification in the Premier League and going far in all the cup competitions. My expectations for the club were raised when we made the move and I can't see why I should alter them.
  • The suggestion that moving stadiums would improve our performance was always nonsense. I'm not even sure Sullivan and Gold believed it when they were trying to sell the idea to us.

What has made a difference was Moyes and I doubt if the stadium featured in the list of reasons why he took the job!
  • Whatever happens, I think I'll be happy with the season. We achieved a lot. It's a success to have got this far in Europe without sacrificing league position.

This year's also been a slog. It's been kind of tiring to watch all these games, let alone play in, and some of that feels caused by things a lot of people were worried about in the summer and then January. Moyes was still making ambitious claims in January, which were always going to raise the hopes of fans. So there have been struggles there, even if the whole season hasn't been. I think for a lot of people, the frustrating part is that the missing pieces feel like they're fixable and we just haven't done that fixing and that's an annoying place to be.
  • The stadium move was about as popular as Gary Glitter until we started to win a few games. It was never about the stadium getting us to “the next level “ that was pure PR spin from Gold & Sullivan. If anything it held the club back and highlighted the deep divisions around the place. So to be where we are now is very, very much against the odds and that is very much down to the manager.
We are still West Ham and we are still punching way above our weight.
What Moyes and his team appear to have got “wrong” is raising some people’s expectations.
You’ve only got to cast around on social media to see that.

The stadium move was all about getting us to the next level. Brady literally said the intention was to have 'world class players in a world class stadium'. David Gold said in 2016 'there's no reason that we shouldn't be in the Champions League by 2021'.

Supporters ultimately backed the move because it was sold as the first necessary step to regularly competing with the big boys. To a large extent we've done that for two seasons now so fans have every right to no longer see us as 'little old West Ham' and expect more than we have in the past.
  • Your first paragraph makes my point exactly.
    That’s what THEY told us.
  • So you're saying the fans shouldn't base their expectations on what they've been told by the owners? That we're a mid- to lower-PL team and we should only ever aspire to that?
  • We have a small squad, too small....that's just about to get smaller.....But its not a massive deal when you see who's leaving....think it would give youngsters opportunities (more out of necessity than anything)

Areola is the biggest miss, but hes bascially our cup keeper

Yarmolenko has underperformed for too long....don't think he's a huge loss

Noble will stay around the club, is a bit of a miss on the pitch but as he's staying we keep his best attribute, his leadership

Fredericks, he's our 3rd choice RB...probably bet that Ashby is likely good enough to replace him in the squad

Kral hasn't even been part of the squad, not a loss at all...may as well have Coventry, Forson, Ekwah etc.

I will miss Ogbonna, but it seems clear we are after a CB still

Feel we'd accept bids for Benrahma, Masuaku and Diop....again I'm not too concerned think they've had plenty of chances and haven't done enough

Also you gotta remember we are likely not going to be in Europe next year, so much fewer games
  • So you're saying the fans shouldn't base their expectations on what they've been told by the owners? That we're a mid- to lower-PL team and we should only ever aspire to that?

I wouldn’t base any expectations on what Gold & Sullivan tell us.
My point is they got lucky when they appointed Moyes and that our aspirations are very much down to him and not the stadium. He’s the one who has got a team playing so well that the stadium now feels like home.
It could so easily have been a disaster.
Just think back to the toxicity only two seasons ago. We’ve come a long way in two seasons and there’s still a way to go and no that doesn’t mean we’re “ little old West Ham “ but a team on the up , let’s hope that continues but still celebrate how far we’ve come.
