One issue with Championship loans are the stakes are too high. They don't actually have much incentive to play a young player who could make costly mistakes that are part of learning, unless they're really exceptional. I feel like a goalkeeper could suffer from that more than others. I think they take loans from us mostly to fill out squad depth.
A tad controversial but I wouldn’t be averse to us looking for a new number 1 keeper this summer. Fab’s been ok but no more than that for the past one and two thirds seasons.

This is what I was going to say.
It's hard with goalkeepers too. Anyone taking him would need to be confident enough that he'll be reliable enough to be a number one. With outfield players they can be in and out of the team, and the loaning club gets to see how they fit in. Keepers are in or out.
Outcast, alderz, I don't disagree with any of that. But that's kind of my point about maybe needing a new 'keeper in the summer. If Trott isn't tearing up trees in the PL2 and has no interest from Championship clubs, then presumably he isn't doing enough to convince Moyes that he's ready for the PL either; the very fact that Moyes names both Martin and Trott on the bench at the moment suggests as much.
So to go back to my original point, if Trott isn't good enough, are we content to have Fab and an increasingly unreliable Randolph as our options going into what we hope is a European season?
He’s 30, second choice now at Newcastle (but has been first choice this season). Won’t cost a fortune. He would be able to provide cover for Fabianski for the next year & then we can look at a new first choice.
Fab has not, IMO, resorted to the Jussi levels of performance, where it became really noticeable that he was costing us goals the older he got. But we need a back-up who is reliable & PL experienced.
No, I don't think anyone is unhappy with Fab - I'm certainly not - but it's more about where his competition and cover comes from. Currently it's Randolph, who seems to have been injured a fair bit lately, Martin, who's out of contract in June, and Trott, who has only ever played for the U23s and 20 odd games in League 1.
As I said earlier, with money tight I can't see us doing anything this summer, but I'm not convinced that we shouldn't.
I’d rather we signed someone directly competing with fab, younger than him. To then maybe interchange for a season and then perhaps climbing the first choice slot with Fab being the number 2 thereafter.
I also don’t think we should wait for fab to drop off significantly before we do any of this

Just my view though
I agree that we shouldn't look to sign 'back-ups' as such. Any signings now, unless they're Academy players, should be with the aim of them challenging the current first team players.
It’s a great shout but I don’t think trott or Anang are keepers who will help a side like WBA get back into the Prem quickly if they get relegated.
Sam Johnstone though would be a fantastic signing for us
Johnstone would be a great shout. Could be a great no.2 to begin with, growing into a solid no.1. Would he prefer to be a no.2 with a top premiership team, or the championship??
According to the record (on transfermarket site ) this current injury is a long one (since January) that he's struggling to get back from, but prior to that, they only list an injury in the 15/16 season.

i think this is changing personally, the amount of successful loans from the Prem to Champo recently where a team has been elevated to promotion. Skipp / White / Diangana / Henderson etc. I think a lot of the clubs who aren't Yo-Yo clubs between prem and champo will more likely pick up players from the prem who need loans especially after covid and brexit finances will be tighter than ever.

I do wish you wouldn't bring facts to the party...
You're right though, my view on Randolph's reliability is based on what I've seen this season. Obviously that's not to say that he won't be fine for next season, but it just got me thinking that if he is entering the realm of more injured than not, do we have enough to cover him in the current squad.
WBA may well decide to let Sam Johnstone go, so maybe a loan deal for Trott or Anang to them for a season in the Championship ...
Funnily enough, we've been linked with a £7.5m move for him (via The Athletic), which sounds cheap for a 28-year-old English goalkeeper in the current international squad. Which given how Sullivan works actually gives the story some credence.
A bit of a left field one, but given Moyes’ penchant for converting wingers to strikers, and also reinvigorating players who have lost their way, is there any merit in wanting us to try and get Adama Traore in the summer. After all, I think Moyes would be after qualities similar to Antonio and in terms of build, pace and power, there are certainly similarities.
Can't see it baracks. He'd be £30m+ and if we want Lingard and Abraham (Ex has stated he's now our No1 striker target) then they'll cost a combined £50m at least, so I can't see Traore as a goer.
Plus his finishing is worse than Antonio's, so he would be an expensive gamble which I just don't think we can afford.
The talk of goalkeepers made me wonder what happened to Butland (going from highly rated when at Stoke and transferring to Palace). He may be someone we may pick up relatively cheaply plus he'd happily jump that Palace ship surely...
We need a new striker. I have massively changed my view on Antonio. I used to see him as a really limited, sporadic player, but now see him as a really good quality striker. But even when we do take care of him, rest him, give him time off, he still pulls something. We need a replacement. You can’t build a side around a player who can’t play more than 20 games of a season.

We all know injuries can happen to any player at any time, but with Antonio you know it definitely will. And as good as he's been, he's just not reliable in terms of fitness. So yes, a striker in the summer is an absolute must, but is there an argument to say we need two? Even if Antonio is used sparingly next season, it only ever takes one sprint for him to be out for three months, so we'd be in the same situation with the new striker as we are now, i.e. trusting to luck that he stays fit.
I know Moyes likes a small squad, but it has to have sufficient strength and depth. If, for arguments sake, we sign Abraham and he becomes Moyes' preferred striker, who is on the bench when Antonio is injured? Odubeko needs a loan, IMO. There's no guarantee Lingard will be with us. Bowen can probably do a job (I guess we'll find out over the next 8 games), but should we have another option, particularly if we're in Europe?

Obviously no-one wants Rice to go, but if Man U offered Lingard, Henderson and £40m? Or given that we need a left back, throw in Brandon Williams?

Goalkeeper is one that needs looking at this window or next
a Noble replacement
a striker has to absolutely come in this summer
