  • Just read the BBC match report. How can a reporter get a job writing for the national broadcaster when they don't know the difference between flare and flair. And same goes for the copy editor. Grrr.

    Not-quite-a-rant over.
  • Honestly match write ups are full of errors like that. I can’t expect better because it happens every week!
  • I found the Amazon coverage quite good with both teams being talked about evenly and not for 5 mins afterwards then talk about Liverpool/Man U like you get on Sky

Comms were pretty good, but I found that the Amazon coverage was behind real time, so I knew about the goals on here before I saw them.
  • If I am not mistaken, we have seen AC getting a straight red whilst playing for us after flailing his arm exactly like benteke when jumping, so I do not see any problem at all with either of Benteke’s yellow cards. Good refereeing.
  • The commentator kept calling Bowen Coufal and the lady was basically a Palace fan.
  • I keep wondering what happens if Haller gets injured .Is there anybody coming through the ranks or have we got to buy/ loan in January?
Personally I’d love to see a kid get a chance

Evening Standard has this assessment of WHU player performance https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/west-ham-vs-crystal-palace-player-ratings-christian-benteke-issa-diop-b342782.html :

    "West Ham (4-1-1-1): Fabianski 6, Coufal 8, Diop 5, Ogbonna 7, Cresswell 6, Bowen 6 (Yarmolenko 6, 80’, Soucek 6, Rice 6, Fornals 5 (Lanzini 7, 45’), Benrahma 7 (Snodgrass, 88’), Haller 7".

Yup, we struggled and were lethagic because we played 4-1-1-1 formation! The lads must have covered a lot of ground to get a draw.

Careful MrsGrey, picking up spelling/grammar mistakes. =)

But I agree, it really is shocking that there are so many of these errors on the BBC.
  • Bit concerned that Rice picked up a knock to his hip/lower back? towards the end but he seemed to run it off ok.

Probably lack of sub-editors. I know some big publications have their writers put their articles online themselves without anyone checking it.

  • Just looking at the highlights, and noticed the ridiculous amount of time and space Ward had before he crossed for their goal. Fornals and Cresswell just completely left him alone. I was cross with Diop’s marking (still am) but seeing it again I’m just as annoyed at the space he has. This is why I don’t think Cresswell is a PL left back anymore. He’s a very, very good LCB, but he is exposed in a back four.

We were so different in a 4. Our threat shifted wings and we saw the return of the left looking more vulnerable. Partly to do with Coufal being immense but Cresswell just doesn't offer the same threat he did in the 5.

Maybe Johnson at LWB for Chelsea? I hope Ziyech isn't back, because they don't look the same without him and he's a very different wide threat to almost any other winger in the league.
  • Bit harsh on Fornals and Cresswell there. Fornals was challenging Milivojevic on the half way line and was never going to get out to Ward. Cresswell challenged Townsend. If anything Soucek should have gone out wide. Benteke still had acres of space in our penalty area and hence a free header. Diops error imo.

Sadly sub editors seem to be a thing of the past, copy is published as soon as possible and urgency to get something (anything) online outweighs accuracy.

To compound the problem a lot of journos are kids fresh out of college working as interns, add predictive text and its a miracle that articles make any sense at all!

Despite being the national broadcaster the BBC is not regarded as a special case, they are just as vulnerable financially as the other news outlets and its a race to the bottom to see who can produce content as cheaply as possible,
  • Not a great performance but we got something which is the difference with us now.

I was actually impressed with Palace for the first time ever, they usually deserve nothing when they play us but take points but in the first half especially they were strong, accurate and didn't even rely on Zaha. Eze looks good and it was a mistake in my view for Hodgson to take him off.

We didn't have a great game but Coufel and Lanzini stood out for me, and although Haller was disappointing again in general his goal was worth the entry fee alone (had there been one).
  • If only we did truly have the Ivorian Ibrahimovic.
  • What's Haller's ratio of headers to acrobatic goals? Apart from yesterday, he got the Bournemouth at the end of last season and I think I remember a kind of overhead kick early on. Maybe we should just be making sure every cross is chipped in behind his run.

I actually thought he looked a bit faster and hungrier off the ball yesterday anyway, even before the goal. His overall game isn't there yet but I think it is improving.
  • I remember a few years ago when the rules allowed in hockey, England had a penalty corner specialist called Callum giles. He was deadeye at those and would come onto the field just to take them and then go off again afterwards as he was pretty ordinary at everything else. Do we have an equivalent in Haller? Ie if an overhead kick is required, then he is the person, but for pretty much all else, not so?
  • A great goal by Haller.
I think however he does so many overhead kicks because he does not have the agility to turn quickly if his back is to the goal.

Yes, I do the same thing all the time 😃
  • I’d break something if I tried lol

Yes, of course you do. =)
  • If he has the agility to do those overhead kicks I think he probably has the ability to turn quickly.
  • On Wednesday night there were several times when he was running, slowly I will admit, between the four Palace defenders trying to close them down but no one appeared to be moving up to assist him so it was a pretty thankless task?
  • Chelsea thread?
  • We’re waiting for Wombat to start the Demba Ba derby thread.
