His overall finishing still isn't great (I don't trust him completely with one on ones) but he's developed a habit of getting into positions where the finish is very easy. I think that's one of the most important no. 9 habits we've been missing in a lot of our strikers.

I do agree that long-term we should be looking for a striker who is better than him, not a back-up.
  • Ocs think that’s a good assessment gets into good positions which is a good trait

Moyes has hinted that he's prepared to wait until the summer to get the striker he wants, which suggests he's looking for someone to compete with Antonio rather then cover for him.

That said, we do still need cover at least for the rest of this season. Odsonne Edouard is the latest name linked this morning, but I would imagine Celtic would want £20m+ so another one that won't happen this month.

I honestly think we're heading towards a deadline day signing of Josh King once Bournemouth have no other option but to sell for £5m.
  • Daily mail online - sports section

The lead article could have been about one the greatest test match victories which unfolded overnight in Brisbane

    Or

It could be a piece on the 49 strikers bought in the G&S era

Guess which one they went with
  • AC Milan and West Ham have enquired about a move for Barcelona's out-of-favour Spanish left-back Junior Firpo, 24. (ESPN)

The Hammers have also made a bid for Sevilla's Morocco forward Youssef En-Nesyri, 23. (The Athletic - subscription required)
  • baracks, I don’t have a problem with the Mail
leading with that article as a lot of G&S transfers have been very poor especially when signing strikers IMHO.
  • One of the reader comments on that article was priceless:

“In their defence they are utterly stupid and have no idea what they are doing”

    😂😂
  • The ESPN article also says that Barcelona want a replacement before Firpo is allowed to leave but they are in the middle of electing a new president, the election isn't until March and all three candidates have blocked the acting president from signing players.

This also effects Eric Garcia's proposed transfer from City with all three candidates preferring to wait until the summer when he'll be available on a free.
  • En-Nesyri looks even better on youtube clips than Haller did! Hope this one doesn't end
    In-Misery.
  • Watching YouTube to sign strikers is probably why we always sign naff strikers.
  • We have a higher success rate with wingers becoming strikers than in signing strikers so maybe we should just make that our policy.

Look at some of the skills that Fornals shows on those Youtube clips, he must have left them back in Spain when he came to us.
  • Funny that we seem to perform better with Fornals in the team though.
  • Herb, absolutely not arguing about that. I'm merely pointing out that what you see on Youtube is not necessarily what you see on the pitch, but you knew what I meant anyway didn't you. ;)

Cant always read you Bubbles. 🤔 😉
  • It’s all part of Sullivan’s plan to get us a transfer ban so we don’t have to spend any money
  • Sully is probably in stitches at the fact that he has spent a small amount to get in Coufal in the summer and that’s it, and yet he still sits 3 points above a team that has spent £200m

SSN reporting Palace have a deal in place to loan Mateta from Mainz for £2.7 m which turns into a permanent move after he plays 15 PL games for £13.4 million. They can get a transfer agreed, why can’t we?
  • We could get a deal done, but I think the club view it as very important that we only get a deal done for the right players. He might be right for Palace, but not for us.
  • I’m not completely sure the club deserves the stick it’s getting for not signing anybody yet.

Our recent business has been first-class - Bowen, Soucek, Coufal and Dawson. Benrahma showing huge promise, too. The money we’ve paid for those players and the impact they’ve made on our squad has been incredible.

Maybe taking our time and waiting for the right player at the right price is the better way to go.

Jorderz I agree about the recent business being good, but the squad is seriously thin, and this window has only gotten thinner. Yes, we added Alves, but that was one of the few positions we had numbers. The fact we have 3 central midfielders and one striker on the books is criminal.

I don’t necessarily mind the waiting game if it pays off, but we are rolling the dice on Antonio’s fitness, and assuming that Soucek and Rice will never be injured or drop off in form.
  • I think we need someone but wouldn't blame the club if they went for loan. In theory we must have the ability to pay someone a good wage as Anderson has gone on loan and Haller has gone. You would think a decent Euro club has a striker not getting matches they would like to put in the window and we can meet all or a good chunk of their wages.
  • Masuaku has started in 10 of 19, 1 more game and he's been missing for 50% of our league games

Antonio has started 9 of 19, already less than 50% of our games (although he has 2 sub appearances)

These are two players everyone said in the summer that we have no cover and can't afford to lose

We sit 7th with 32 points despite this

Don't get me wrong, we are very thin...
We need a new CM and ST....but both will be back ups

To buy a player who can replace Antonio/Rice/Soucek would cost a lot unless we want a significant drop off in quality

Personally id like to see Coventry promoted to the squad....hes long been touted and at 20 he isnt a teen
  • As always best to wait to the end of the window before deciding if its a success or failure . Yes the squad is thin but we have just won four on the bounce and unbeaten in seven its not like we are struggling I would rather trust Moyes has a plan

  • To buy a player who can replace Antonio/Rice/Soucek would cost a lot unless we want a significant drop off in quality

Not sure that's necessarily true. Antonio cost £7m and Soucek £19m; not huge money in the modern game. If we had an effective scouting system we could have identified potential replacements that were suitable but affordable; look at what Leicester did with Kante and Mahrez. There are good players available at affordable prices if you're prepared to invest in a proper recruitment system.
  • Not sure about the point of the club not deserving the flak it is getting

Sure we should take our time and make sure we get the right player

However before identifying and securing that right player we have got rid of our only other recognised forward.

In so doing that throws patience out of the window and it becomes a race against time and back to the old story of desperately chasing every last name

I’m sorry, but you can’t have it both ways IMO.

If you want to be patient and take time to find the right player, should have kept Haller in the interim.

In a world affected by COVID, a club our size spending £20mil on a back up is a lot

Antonio was cheap, but back in 2015 championship players cost less....Watkins, Benrahma, Bowen, maddison, Eze etc. are testament to what it costs to get the best players these days

    For every Kante/Mahrez there is a Slimani/Perez/Iheanacho

Bowen, Soucek, Coufal, Dawson, Benrahma is testament we are starting to get it right
  • It is a common belief that no striker wants to join Spurs as they will be Kane’s understudy so are we going down the same route as a lot of the players we are “looking” at will expect to start?
  • If I was a striker with PL aspirations and genuinely believed I was good enough, I would take my chances against Antonio. Remember that he misses a lot of games, and he was regarded a winger until March.

He also has 5 goals in 9 this season and 10 goals in 19 last year...averaging just shy of a goal every two games including sub appearances

Think that any striker who can do a goal every 2 games in the Prem will cost A LOT of money
