  • ;scarf Welcome Mr B.

    Make me happy ;wahoo

Although I'm a bit alarmed by the news that he's now going on holiday and will be back later in the month. ;puzzled

What about our transfers? Is it all being left to Sully, and young Jack once school breaks up? ;puzzled
  • The thing is, if it all goes wrong and we struggle with the workload of Europe, he's the sort of manager you'd want in a relegation scrap. Certainly over a Zola or Grant.
There's only one phone call that needs to be made at that point and I think we both know whose that is.....

    ;whistle

  • If_Slaven_you_is_wrong_I_don't_wanna_be_right
  • Going to give Slaven 2 years before I ultimately judge him.

The first year, new squad, jelling the players, different approach, Europa plus the pressure of the last season at the OS.

If it's a total disaster (I don't think it will be) then that could be different.

3m a year......twice the basic the previous manager was on but no payoff if relegated (good). That's raised the bar a little and we could have the genuine 13th highest paid manager in the world.

Good luck and welcome back Slaven!

  • Did Ecuador progress through in Copa America ?
  • What are the odds that Slav gets a full season out of Andy Carroll, and we have a storming season? ;hmm
  • vorse ;ok

It's looking a bit like that. Presumably Sully has always been angling for more power in that direction ;hmm

Squad reports back Monday 22 June. (I too expect those involved in summer tournaments will have an extended break.)

    It hasn't started yet!

edit ;doh, of course, they've only been playing friendlies so far.
  • For me the main targets under the Slaven regime are to avoid seeing this game in game out:

    Twist: "Awful, simply awful"

m-h: "Teflon will probably claim we dominated the game and created dozens of chances"

Hutton: "I cannot believe how a side can consistently go out and play with such little passion game in game out. Year after year it's the same with West Ham, it never changes no matter who manages the club"

luke: "3 wins in 21. Can someone please tell Downing he's allowed to tackle or he can leave the club as far as I an concerned"

    yeold: "we're not safe yet"

    etc, etc
  • That would be great not having a reason to say those things Baracks ;ok
  • We're not safe yet though
  • I wish him well & welcome him to the club.He has my backing 100% but if I'm honest I'm not convinced by his record so far.Having said that he has a clean slate so let's hope I'm wrong.

    Baracks

I am sure we will get passion and fight with Bilic at the helm.
He scares me , so I am sure the players will make sure they start playing well consistently or they will not play .
We must not see any more lacklustre performances that we saw in the second half of the season.

That's what I want to see passion with a bit of skill. We know we might not win every game but I want us to play as if we think we can . In too many games we let the opposition dominate us , it would be nice for it to be the other way round .
  • Good luck Slaven now let's see some decent entertaining football for a
change and clear out some of the underperforming players too that think they have the right to be in the team.

  • Welcome, Slaven. Welcome, Mighty Beard.

    IMG_20150519_061212
Somebody should buy him some headgear to go with the beard. A beret to deliver Fidel Castro-style inspirational pre-match team talks and then a top hat to lend Abraham Lincoln-style gravitas to the after-match press conferences.

  • John Carver sacked by Newcastle. If Sullivan and Gold could only have held off for a few more hours then the best coach in the Premier League would have been available.

  • "With the greatest respect to women, football is the most beautiful thing in the world."

" If you know to share what you own, you live happily and with honor. I am a true socialist. I know I can't save the world on my own; but if there is a struggle against unjustness, I always prefer to be on the frontline, and that is my attitude toward life."

So speaks Slaven, the man, the myth, the manager.
  • Mchammer it's the ability to make fun of my spelling that made me love teachers so much....

Your just getting me back for saying I didn't want any Mc's to manage the club aren't you.... ;biggrin
affirmative. been checking every post since waiting for that one mistake to seize on! mwhahahahahahahaha
  • Personally I am not happy with this appointment, the main reason is I just don't see him as a massive step up from Sam (fair to compare imo). A man to take us to the next level would have been someone what has managed in a top league and had success. Bilic hasn't done that.

I will support him as I do with all managers, just hope he can deliver the goods.
    My realistic aims would be.

Solid finish in the league (anything around 14th or higher)

    As long as

    1) There is clear evidence of a better style of football

    And

    2) We progress to the group stage of the Europa League

Cups are a bonus, but would be nice to take one seriously (again Europa dependent).
    Sorry Luke,

Why is it you are giving Bilic a realistic target of 14th? Personally I would be disappointed with anything less than 10th and should be aiming at 6th-8th. He will have (pretty much) the same squad from last year at his disposal with money to spend in the transfer window, so imo should be finishing higher than we did last year.

KHA - it's all dependent on the second two.

If we don't reach the group stage, I would hope for top 10.

If our style of play is a significant improvement, I would accept a little lower (14th), considering he will be in his first season and have to contend with, potentially, 3 cup competitions too.

He has hardly got the same squad. He's lost Jenks and Song, two key players to last season and our excellent start. He has also lost squad players in Jussi, Demel and Cole. Not big names but certainly experienced in this league.

He has a lot to sort, and not a lot of time. I think he can be given a bit of leeway in his first year. ;ok
  • Luke,

We played a lot of entertaining football last year, especially in the first half of the season imo.

I don't understand how finishing lower than we have done previously would be acceptable so long as "If our style of play is a significant improvement"... surely if we have a significant improvement in performance we should expect better results?
  • Mchammer......your wait was short lived but unfortunately you didn't pick up on the mistake in Vorses' post you highlighted........ ;wink ;biggrin
  • Luke

I think Song was a key player in about 2 games last season

    ;lol
  • KHA

Personally I am quite concerned that when Allarydyce has left other clubs they usually get relegated.

    I don't know why.

Is it that Allardyce's agent has something to do with it and is in the players ears?
Is it because they are used to playing a certain type of football and the transition is a big one?

I really don't know. However I do believe that whenever you change manager you can't expect to take off immediately. I was having lunch with Angus Kinnear about a year ago and he said that changing managers will usually cost a club 9 points in the first season they take over. How this is measured, I don't know, but I would say it is a transition season in all forms.

Allardyce is clearly not an easy act to follow. The past has proved this. Let's not expect the world from Bilic in the first season. If histoy is to go by then we should be lucky to stay up. Let's not assume top 6. We've all said the squad needs a lot of decent additions and quickly.

I think Allardyce did a great job in many respects but I think Bilic will bring us on further. Just maybe not immediately. Allardyce didn't exactly win the Championship in style in his first year.
