Isn't it a shame we can't do deals like this one?
  • Why’s that a shame? I’ve never heard of them.
  • @Jorderz_Moyes_will_be_Moyes, That response is straight out of the Moyes transfer rulebook. =) =) .

Until we alter our approach to how we sign players we will always be unable to compete regularly in the top six every season. Good example is making a low contract offer for Angel Gomes who is available with no fee!.
  • Not sure 100k is a low contract offer!

Not sure Gomes fits that bill of a lesser known player. Seems more of a Paqueta, Anderson etc type signing that will probably be underwhelming while costing a lot in wages. Hopefully we do start having some success unearthing young players, though I do think it’s difficult to get right.

I literally posted a like to an article that says Angel Gomes has rejected a contract offer from us because he wants more than £100k a week. The same Angel Gomes who’s been in and out of the Lille side all season.

Tbh for all their faults I’d rather have our owners than Chelsea’s gang of shysters with more money than sense.

£44m for a 17yo who will stay at Sporting for another season and £18m for a 20yo currently on loan at Las Palmas (19th in La Liga)

Plus further down the article it says Chelsea have signed two more 17yos (£29m and £17m) so that's £108m on four kids with an average age of 18

I wonder how many times any of them will get to actually play for Chelsea...
  • Just noticed that Irving wasn't in the Scottish squad for the playoffs vs Greece and wasn't called up for the November internationals

He wasn't on our bench for Newcastle and Everton

I wonder how long he's going to stick around
  • The Irving transfer has always been a bit odd, and although Potter has given him some minutes I'm not sure he's exactly key to his plans. I expect a summer exit tbh.
  • A bit odd indeed. While Googling around I found that the day after we played Everton he was in Austria watching his old club Klagenfurt

A month ago Bowen was praising Irving in an interview with The Athletic (you have to pay to read it but its been quoted)

Same old Chelsea. Buy up the young talent to stop other teams buying them. Then not play them. Seen it all before.

It's about time a rule was introduced limiting the number of players that a club can have out on loan.

Chelsea buy young talent not neccasarily

There is, and I think it's six.

Edit: Does not apply to U21's.
  • Looks like Coufal could be gone in the summer

Czech newspaper MF DNES published an interview with him yesterday, parts are translated by the Sports Witness website and he's not a happy bunny (even though he says he loves West Ham and could see himself ending his career here)

First he thought he deserved a new improved contract in the summer but instead the club just activated the clause that extended his existing contract for a year

Second he got a great offer from Fulham on January deadline day but the club wouldn't let him leave. He doesn't want to leave London as his family has settled here, his son is in the West Ham kids and his daughter is about to start school

Third he wasn't happy when Potter played him as a centre back although he thinks he did okay there

He doesn't seem too keen on a move to Saudi but reports are that Moyes wants him at Everton

  • I don't blame him at all. He has been a very good player for us, and always stepped up. He deserves better than being on the bench every game. I would prefer him as part of the back 5 than Mavro, and no doubt he believes the same.
  • Freddie Potts has just signed a 4-year contract

Good news for us, bad news for Portsmouth where the fans were hoping his current loan deal could be made permanent

Nice photo of him and Nobes on the website

  • Not necessarily. Just means we can ask for more as the contract has 4 years to run.

This is Pompey's first season back in the Championship after twelve seasons in the lower leagues and they're only 4 points above relegation with eight games left

They've made losses four years in a row, this season they spent around £5m on five players so I'm not sure they'd be able to afford him with the one year he had left on his contract let alone now he has a four year contract

    ---------------------------------------------------

Claret & Hugh reporting that we won't be buying Soler as according to a club source "He’s just too expensive and hasn’t impressed enough.”

C&H also say Irving played as a left sided centreback in a behind closed doors friendly against Brentford
  • Claret and Hugh again

This time Paqueta will be leaving in the summer regardless of the outcome of the FA inquiry and Emerson will be going too

With Coufal, Ings, Fabianski, Antonio and Cresswell all out of contract at the end of the season we could have a very different looking squad next season

It seems to be like this most seasons......
  • How about our young kids stepping up Marshall,Earthy,Casey,Orford,Potts,What do you guys think about any of those being around the 1st team next season ,I assume Ollie scarles will be a part of it .Have i missed anyone who might push on

I think Potts and Scarles will both be in the squad, the others will depend on who else we sign / sell, and how they perform in pre-season. Scarles is basically already in the squad, and I think Rodriguez will probably be let go, so Potts can definitely be a squad option.

I think Marshall will be an interesting one, as he's had a decent season with Huddersfield, and we're always in need of striker options.

Potter stopped Casey going on loan in January which suggests he rates him

Earthy got a call up for the England U20s (now called Elite Squad) along with Casey and Scarles

The Athletic predicts that Orford and Guilherme will go out on loan next season

Also links us with Adam Webster (Potter signed him in his first season at Brighton) as a replacement for Mavropanos and has suggested we might give Cresswell another year

Agree. Marshall is an exceptional talent from Northern Ireland and we just signed Joel Kerr a 17 year old also from Northern Ireland. Sometimes I think that these kids will never make the first team and that they’re just looked upon as bankable assets to be sold on.

  • I don’t know why so many people think that academy players are the answer. Less than 4% go on to make it in pro football so it’s a far far smaller percentage that make it to the PL. They’re signed for their potential but few realise it so are moved on.
The EL is littered with players we all thought would make it big but never did.
  • But you have to be a dreamer to support West Ham, even if they mostly don't come true:

Then like my dreams, they fade and die.

I think it depends on what question you’re saying they’re the answer to. I don’t think that anyone has said they’ll be starters for us, but in terms of filling out the squad so we can prioritise signings in key areas, I think academy players can absolutely be the answer.
  • Of all the homegrown lads, Earthy impressed me most. He looked comfortable, has talent and a smart footballing brain. And we need a left sided attacker.
