FA Cup Villa (A) 8pm Friday 10 Jan
Like us, Spurs and Manchester United, Aston Villa are having a “meh” season in the Premier League, at this stage last season they were 2nd on 42pts, just 3 points behind Liverpool but this season they are 8th on 32pts
Unlike us Unai Emery’s job security is not in doubt and they are still in Europe with an excellent chance of being seeded for the knockout stage of the Champions League if they can get results against Monaco away and Celtic home this month.
There will be a few noticeable absences from our loss at home in August,
Both teams will be missing their captains as John McGinn suffered a hamstring injury in the 2-1 win over Leicester at the weekend
On the bright side Jhon Duran will be serving the last match of a three match ban and Ollie Watkins has only scored 5 in the last 18 appearances. On the other side Watkins has scored against us in three of the last four at Villa Park
At the back Tyrone Mings got his second Premier League start of the season at the weekend thanks to the absence of Diego Carlos (knock) and Pau Torres who broke a metatarsal against Brighton
Morgan Rogers missed the Leicester game after picking up his 5th yellow while Jaden Philogene was out with a knock but the summer signing has only started twice in the league
So the obvious question is whether they have strength in depth to carry on in the Champions League, try to stay in contention for Europe in the Prem and have a run in the FA Cup?
Against Leicester Emery gave Ross Barkley a start so who knows
Best XI
Martinez
Cash Konsa Mings Digne
Kamara Onana
Bailey Tielemans Rogers
Watkins

Comments
Birmingham Mail predicting a starting XI with a few different names
Olsen
Bogarde, Konsa, Mings, Maatsen
Onana, Barkley
Bailey, Ramsey, Buendia
Watkins
Robin Olsen, 35yo Swedish GK, joined from Roma in 2022 but has only made 18 appearances since then and just one against Chelsea this season when Martinez got injured
Lamare Bogarde, Dutch U20 RB/CB, joined the Villa academy in 2020, 6 appearances this season and is regarded as a huge prospect for the future
Emiliano Buendía had 27 starts and played in every game last season but has had just 16 appearances with only 2 starts in the Carabao Cup this season
Ian Maatsen has had 22 appearances but only 6 starts since joining from Chelsea in the summer
Jacob Ramsey, 23yo, Villa youth, 18 appearances with 9 starts
Emery will hold a press conference tomorrow so maybe we’ll get more of a hint
Potter likes to play three at the back so that could be a problem with only two fit centre backs
I’d guess…
