Spurs (A) 12:30pm Saturday 19th October 2024 Live on TNT

Starting this one now as I've got a busy weekend

Spurs had a big clear out over the summer with Emerson Royal, Ryan Sessegnon, Tanguay Ndombélé, Ivan Perisic, Eric Dier, Oliver Skipp and Giovani De Celso all heading for pastures new plus Pierre-Emil Højbjerg and Bryan Gil going out on loan

In contrast they only signed one player over 23 but that was Solanke

Postecoglou seems to have settled on his best XI with ten players starting the last four Premier League games. The only change has been Timo Werner replacing the injured Son Heung-min for the last two games although Postecoglou hinted that Son might be close to a return in his pre-Brighton press conference. Richarlson is also injured but not expected back this weekend

Vicario
Porro - Romero - van de Ven – Udogie
Kulusevski - Bentencur - Maddision
Johnson - Solanke – Werner

Dejan Kulusevski makes things tick, currently 6th in the Premier League for key passes (3 per game).

Watching the Brighton game Spurs repeatedly created chances by playing into space for the wingers to run onto and it is probably no coincidence that Brennan Johnson has scored in each of the last 6 games in all competitions.

Our best bet might be reverting to Moyesball, defending deep, allowing them to have the majority of possession and hitting them on the counter. Last time we visited White Hart Lane they had 75% possession, 23 shots to our 11 and we came away with 3 points despite going 1-0 down

  • Another good write up Aslef. I would agree that a counter attacking plan would be best but I am a little concerned about asking the team play a different way when they have been trying their best to carry out Lopetegui's vision (although in some matches I had no idea what that was) . It's one of those games that if we can score first they could fall to pieces as they had a lot of abuse after losing from 0-2 up at Brighton.

I always hope we can get three points from Spurs as I don't really dislike any other team but I do dislike them a lot, to the extent there is no other football team they could play and I would want them to win. Aside from the local London rivalry my particular dislike began when I was just a lad and they took my favourite player in Paul Allen from us.

    Heart says 0-1
    Head says 3-1
  • Areola
    Wan-Bissaka - Todibo - Kilman - Emerson
    Souček - Rodríguez - Paquetá
    Bowen - Antonio - Kudus

Same as we’ve done this season. Try & get on the ball & take the game to them. We will need to be wary of a repeat of the Chelsea game; pushing too high & pressing badly, as they are very good at moving the ball & have pace in wide areas.

Very similar position, but it was Martin Peters for me.

    1-2 to us

Exactly what I thought watching them against Brighton. In the second half Brighton's fullbacks played deeper making Werner and Johnson less effective - Werner made three crosses in the 1st half, none in the 2nd

If we give them too much space on the wings they will make us pay
  • I have a Ryanair flight (no wi-fi) to Sweden at 12.10 so this will be the first game that I haven't been able to watch for over a year :(

Give it's Ryanair, you should see most of the game before you leave😜.
  • The deluded derby 😂
I’m sorry if this offends anyone but I found this quite funny.

  • I saw that too 😂🤣😂.

I do think the Spurs rivalry is something they've generated in the past 20 or 30 years, I don't really remember it as being such a big thing when I was younger. I feel it's because they were generally second best in their proper derby against Arsenal, so tried to cultivate a rivalry which they felt they had the better of, hence all the "it's your cup final" comments.

  • Apparently Füllkrug has had another setback, could be another 4 weeks before he's ready.
  • From today's presser:

"How long will Fullkrug going to be out?"

"He initially thought he had one non-important injury, but he has had complications and we are waiting to recover him.

"We thought he would be out for a maximum of two weeks, but right now he is out and I don't say anything about how long he will be out. We will see."

    Eghh, sounds about right

This is the real West Ham way

  • Feel bad for him .Sure he wants to play for us

Reading around a few Spurs forums and news sites there seems to be a bit of dissatisfaction with Ange's selection and tactics

There's almost unanimous hope that Son is fit to start as they've been less than impressed with Timo Werner and a fair amount of criticism of Cristian Romero's performance this season with some suggesting that 22yo Radu Dragușin should replace him

Dragușin has only made 13 appearances for Spurs since he signed from Genoa for £26.7m in January. He managed to get himself sent off after just 7 minutes against Qarabag in the Europa League three weeks ago but reports are that he put in good performances for Romania against Lithuania and Cyprus

To be honest I'd expect any decent Premier League player to put in good performances against Lithuania and Cyprus...

What we need to do here is show our progression. Get on the ball, be brave & take the game to Tottenham.
  • This is one of the most unpredictable "cup finals" I can remember. So I'm predicting a loss 😉

A game that will live on in our memories

  • I said at the top that Postecoglou had settled on his best XI and maybe one reason is that after the summer clearout there's not a lot of depth to the squad

Apart from back up keeper Fraser. Forster (now 36) there have only been two players over 23 to get any minutes; 28yo DM Yves Bissouma and 24yo RB Djed Spencer who was signed from Middlesbrough in 2022 but since then has been on loan at Stade Rennais, Leeds and Genoa

There are a couple of noticeable absences from the bench; Richarlson is injured but Ben Davies hasn't been seen in a Tottenham shirt since the beginning of October against Ferencveos in the Europa despite captaining Wales in the international break and its pretty much taken for granted that he will leave when his contract expires in the summer

Other than that its a noticeably young bench. 22yo CM/DM Pape Sarr already has 52 appearances for Spurs, 18yo CM/DM Lucas Bergvall already has 2 full caps for Sweden and 18yo CB/DM Archie Gray signed from Leeds in the summer for £30m

Another summer signing, 19yo RW Wilson Odobert (Burnley £25m) is injured

17yo LW Mikey Moore and 19yo CF Will Lankshear have been promoted from the kids to fill the gaps

Not a lot to call on
  • West Ham team news...
Team to face Spurs: Areola, Wan-Bissaka, Todibo, Kilman, Emerson, Rodriguez, Soucek, Paqueta, Kudus, Bowen, Antonio.
Subs: Fabianski, Cresswell, Soler, Coufal, Summerville, Mavropanos, Guilherme, Ings, Alvarez.

    Tottenham team news
Team to face West Ham: Vicario, Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie, Bissouma, Maddison, Kulusevski, Johnson, Solanke, Son.
Subs: Forster, Dragusin, Gray, Bentancur, Sarr, Bergvall, Moore, Richarlison, Werner.
  • Disappointed but not surprised to see Antonio starting; one decent game against a dreadful Ipswich side does not make me forget the rest of his performances this season, nor his awful record after coming back from his international jaunts for Jamaica, despite his refusal to play for them when he thought he had a chance of playing for England.

Can't see us getting anything from this when we're starting with 10 men.
  • I’ll be watching this late, so the MOTM thread will be late too, unless someone else starts it.

    Antonio for me.😉

  • There is no way he was going to drop Antonio after his performance against Ipswich.
  • This will be tough & a good test of where we are at under JL. I can’t help feel that they look a little short in midfield on paper. Bissouma & then two creative number 10s playing in the midfield.
  • Son in for Werner and Richarlson on the bench despite reports he wouldn’t be ready

I finish my meal break at 12:23, don’t get off the train until 4:20pm

    A draw would be nice
  • Also Bissouma in for Bentancur
  • Coyi!

Won't be watching this, so hope I'll see a happy happy joy joy result when I get home later.
  • Already an early scare after 90 seconds
  • Areola must have one of the worst records in the league for retaining the ball on his clearances.
