T20 World Cup

The Cricket T20 World Cup is currently underway in the USA and the West Indies.

England's campaign begins today against Scotland.

Lots of real minnows involved, 20 teams in total. 2 group stages (4 groups of 5, top 2 go through to second stage of 2 groups of 4), then semi-finals and final.

Let's hope we put up a better defence than we did in the 50 over format.

  • England's first game could be a lottery; Scotland are batting first, but it's been raining on and off all afternoon. It's been reduced to 10 overs a side, and there will be a DLS adjustment to the Scotland total to set our target, with more overs lost through rain a distinct possibility.

Scotland score 90, the target is 109 although I'm not sure how many overs will be powerplay; it will make a huge difference if it's the normal 6 rather than an adjusted 3.
  • Match abandoned. Very frustrating start to the campaign.
  • Non sure why, but it feels really weird watching USA play cricket; they're currently giving Pakistan a run for their money, they're 84-1 after 11 overs chasing 160.

It's gone to a Super Over!
  • Dreadful in the field by Pakistan in the super over; they bowled 3 wides, and allowed the batsmen to run 4 more off those 3 wides. USA made 18, and Pakistan only made 13-1.

Should also be noted that USA needed a boundary off their last regulation ball to tie Pakistan's 159, scoring 14 off the final over of the 20.
  • Ho, ho ho! That was pure cricket theatre. Pakistan did so well in the closing overs to strangle USA and put themselves in a winning position, then mucked it up. It's always a toss-up what you're going to get with Pakistan, and here Pakistani chaos triumphed over Pakistani brilliance!

One question, where were Babar Azam and Mohammed Rizwan in the Super Over? They're two of the best batsmen in the world.

Neither are known as being explosive hitters though, which tends to be what they look for in a Super Over.

  • Oh dear. Pakistan live up to their, imo, most ill disciplined team in the field tag. Poorly led by Babar as well.
  • Netherlands 103-9 but SA currently 3-3.
  • And now 12-4.

England win the toss against Australia and will field first.
  • After a good first over from Moeen Ali, surprisingly Will Jacks opens the bowling from the other end and he goes for 22 😭😭😭.
  • Aussies scoring at 14 an over at the moment.

Not good. After Archer bowls the 3rd over, going for 8, Mark Wood replaces Jacks and he goes for 22 as well. 55-0 after just 4 overs.
  • Moeen Ali back on, but he goes for 15 off his first 5 balls but then takes the wicket of Warner, Australia 70-1 off just 5 overs.
  • 74-2, Head gone now
  • 74-2, Archer gets Travis Head so both the openers gone now. Still 2 balls of the powerplay left though, a very good start by Australia.
  • 74-2 at the end of the powerplay, 2 batsmen on 0 in the middle.

Fortunately, I'm watching Serbia beating Sweden (England's perennial bogey team) 2-0.
    Did I say fortunately? ;)
  • Make that 3-0 :(
  • 102-2 after 10 overs. A very good platform to set a big, big score.
  • Meanwhile, South Africa are 88-6, needing 16 runs off 13 balls against the Netherlands.
  • South Africa manage to get over the line.
  • Are we the worst bowling attack or are they one of the best batting attacks. Average T20 score at this ground is about 140. They are on course for 200 plus.

I think it's a bit of both. We certainly haven't bowled well, and they've really taken advantage of it. I'm surprised the average score is as low as 140 though, it's not a very big ground.
  • 139-3, Marsh gone.
  • Marsh out stumped eventually after Buttler made a mess of his first attempt.
  • Maxwell gone now, 141-4. Again, 2 new batsmen at the crease.
  • Just looked at stats. Average score batting first 152 and highest ever run chase 172. We’ll need to set a record to win this one.
  • Jordan puts down a tough caught and bowled chance.

168-5, Jordan gets a wicket in the over anyway.
