we may be & we will remain so if we keep letting our best players leave and don't show any ambition to break the trend. We have had two top seven finishes in 2 of the last three seasons and we know why there wasn't possibly a higher 1in at least one of them due to our lack of transfer activity in the January window of that season.
I have to disagree. Selling our 'best players' and 'lacking ambition' is not the reason we can't compete for top 4 places. (imo, obvs)
Ambition doesn't win football matches and it doesn't put money in the transfer kitty.
People seem to think that this paying over 5 years is unique. I’m pretty sure the whole reason players get long contracts is to spread payments. It’s pretty normal.
I'm pretty sure the length of the players contract and the time to pay the transfer fee are totally separate.
I do believe after 10 years with us he does love the club and the fans. However, nobody should begrudge him trying, in his eyes, to do better and potentially climb higher. He's done nothing wrong and always gave his best for us. A 100M gain on a boy we picked up from Chelsea is... Massive
You can love a club & the fans but still move on & it doesn’t matter whether you move to another club within the same vicinity or go to America. It’s obvious for all to see that Dec cares massively about this club, but it’s only a short career, he’s been here 10 years & he wants to make memories that will stay with him when he retires. He was desperate to lift that trophy, knowing full well it would be his last night with us. I can’t hold any negative feelings towards him. I will stop short of wishing him luck at Arsenal, but I feel he deserves to play consistently at the top & I know he will hurt when he leaves us for Arsenal, as much as he will be excited about the next chapter.

They can be. But if you’ve read anything about Chelsea’s spending in the past year you’ll have read about them spreading payments over the length of a contract to reduce FFP impact. Hence Mudryk on an 8 year deal. Hence UEFA banning fees being payed over more than 5 years.
Payments for the player being spread over a period of time be it the length of the contract or whatever has absolutely nothing to do with what the club pays the player. The player has to be paid for the length of his contract. If the two were linked a club paying the fee in one off would have to pay the player in a one off. They are two totally separate entities.

I might be wrong but I'd understood this was more of an accounting loophole than representative of how the transfer fee is actually being paid. So Chelsea (and obviously everybody else) break the outgoing cost down over the length of the contract, not because that's how they're paying the transfer fee but because they argue the cost should be averaged over the length of time they're at the club.
It's how Chelsea will stay within FFP this year, I think. When you sell a player you put the entire incoming fee as revenue straight away. So for example they sell a player for £30m this summer, they report that as £30m in (regardless of the instalments) but would only be reporting 1/8th of the Mudryk fee out in this accounting period.
I think it was all done between the clubs a few days ago. Rice only returns from holiday today, according to Ex, so his part of it (medical, photo shoots etc.) won't be done until Monday I suspect.
I honestly can't wait. Was thinking about this last night; it's almost completely overshadowed Prague. We had less than 24 hours before Sullivan was telling the world that Rice wanted out, and since then it's been nothing but Rice to Arsenal, ooh no, City, ah, but what about Bayern, nah, he only wants Arsenal.
And of course the vast majority of photos of that night in Prague feature Arsenal's new star boy.
Hopefully we'll have a new signing ready to announce to quickly bury his departure.
I also think we have to accept that, as good as Rice is, he has the potential to develop & become even better. Playing in a more progressive style & team is going to challenge him & make him better. He has the right to want to become an even better player than he is. We play a certain way, 40% of the ball, sitting deep in our shape, counter-attacks & sporadic periods of possession. He’s going to have more pressure on him to dictate & control games for Arsenal & dominate the pitch & it’s going to challenge him & develop those areas of his game people are more sceptical about (passing, assisting, linking play, scoring).
I can't work out if this is a really strange situation or not.
I mean, they're mates, and more likely than not it's a catch up before he goes. Maybe Noble has been giving him some PR tips ahead of his farewell statements, who knows.
But he's wearing West Ham shorts, isn't he? Just feels a bit... I dunno... cruel, almost.
Arsenal ITK's are talking rubbish. Why would he sign his contract at Noble's back garden? Surely he'd sign at the club whilst being photographed signing it.
Assuming we do get the agreement with Arsenal today, I can't see the medical and media stuff being completed until tomorrow at the earliest given Rice was only back in the country on Saturday.
So I think this will still drag on until the middle of the week.
Still interested to see how the club manage this. Will they make a big deal of it? Or just a short and sweet announcement and then quickly move on by announcing a new signing.

(Though, I expect at least half the money will be wasted).

Club ‘all but confirms’ Rice’s departure, as you can no longer purchase ‘Rice 41’ kits on the club store.

Rice is sold, we can't get any new players over the line till August. They are not involved in pre-season so not match fit to start the season.
Grumpy old me
Not sure this is true but…
