  • I think Southgate’s been great for England. He’s made decision I don’t always agree with, but he’s been a million miles better than pretty much all the England managers in my life
  • Let’s keep personal comments off the site please.
  • The old saying " you don't have to be a great manager, just a lucky one " I think that's partially true to Southgate in our last two campaigns.
  • No Bowen

The U21s, Ben Johnson starts again

Hard work watching this England team ,Might have to watch an old Burnley 0-0 game to wake me up =)
  • Nobody is controlling midfield. Mount has barely touched it.
  • Spent the first half behind the Germany goal and having to listen to a few Germany supporters swearing like mad. 🙄
But lots of England support in the stadium, not just in the tier above us.
  • Just browsing, I see Connor Coventry is doing well for Ireland ( U21).

  • Bowen the most dangerous player for England and he’s only even on five minutes
  • Wasn’t Kane offside anyway?
  • How was that a penalty. Wasn’t he offside to start with and then tripped himself.
  • He clearly clips his own foot, not sure I can see any contact from the German player. He looked offside too although it may have been played by a German.
  • I thought it came off a German, and then Schlotterack fell into his right leg, which is why he clipped himself and went over.

Contact stopping a goal scoring opportunity is a penalty.
Also ball came off a German player so onside.
Lucky for us, but I will take it.
We were sooooo much better when Grealish came on and Sterling went central. Also Bowen had an immediate impact.
  • What it does show is Rice, although decent today, is not a natural DM & now a powerful, driving, box-to-box midfielder. A lot of times today he left areas around him vacant & struggled for discipline & awareness of players breaking around the box.

Yeah I agree. The problem England have is that it’s only really Phillips that is a DM, and if he’s not on the pitch Rice is the only option. He and Bellingham both want to push on, and there were gaps as a result.
  • Grealish was great when he came on. Mount is just meh for England.

Who could we slot in as a DM next to Rice? I think Rice can play with a back 3/5 but in a back 4, which I think suits England best, he can’t be the specialist DM.

Rice has prospered as one part of a ''double pivot'' rather than a lone DM. If Southgate wants the best from him then play 4-2-3-1 with Rice and Phillips

Rice/Phillips are ok, but Wilson/Phillips seem to have a more harmonious relationship ;)

The thing we should all remember, as Grealish is born and bred in Birmingham, if this match was 90 years ago he would've been nobbled with the game fixed by order of the Peaky Blinders :)
  • I'm sure Aslef, that is the point. Rice (and Moyes) have created a way to get the best from him. He goes into the England setup and is expected just to forget all that, and play a different way. It's no wonder he doesn't shine as he does for us. Bonus point is he doesn't look £150m worth in an England shirt, which might dent his suitors confidence
  • Also, most of the time he’s touted for big clubs as an out and out DM, and I think he shows that he isn’t that when he’s with England.
  • Well no England player has looked like a £25m player recently.
  • My Personal opinion, Rice is an international standard player but doesn't fit this England team at all. I honestly think Henderson Bellingham Phillips would offer more in a 2/3 of those than a combo of Rice + 1.
Unless Southgate is willing to let Rice play box to box and have a specialised DM next to him and allow Rice to get further up the pitch, I don't think its going to work. I think Rice's game has evolved beyond just a DM role and the DM role he is being required to do in an England shirt is stifling him and England.
  • I think a change of manager would help...
  • In the second half I was watching Rice and it struck me to see how much he took controll. It seemed like every time Pickford had the ball he tried to find Rice in order to be told what to do with it.
  • Rice got motm

I was surprised by that tbh, but happy for him
  • I thought he was excellent. Along with a couple of others.
