We will know more come 10pm tonight.

Part of me thinks, with all the doom & gloom, we will surprise people tonight & play quite well & get a good win.

Then people will sit there saying ‘maybe we have a decent side’.

Cos we do have a decent side. Soucek & Rice, not many will want them replaced, £24m wide players & a £45m front man, plus Antonio. Not to mention the bench options of Lanzini, Yarmolenko & Anderson.

We need to defend better, whether that means we need to be coached to defend better or we just need better defenders, who knows.
  • Fair enough. Still only 19 though so he has more time to prove himself and just needs game time. Don't think it would be a bad loan move for us.
  • Any decent player who provides competition for places is a good signing for me but for a while most of our players know when fit they be in the team and that provides complacency imo

Rice and Soucek, agreed. A top eight midfield partnership, that. But the bench options are just names. Lanzini and Anderson in particular had an awful season and I've seen nothing in pre-season to make me think they'll offer much more this time round. Yarmolenko is a decent option, as the Chelsea game showed, but he's not a starter and if we could get £15m for him from China (and I had faith that the board would get a decent replacement) then I'd take it.
  • We are stronger this season than last as we don't have Roberto. If we had had a competent back up keeper we would not have been involved in a relegation battle.
  • If we get a £15m bid for Yarmolenko, then it will make me even more angry at the Diangana sale, tbh. As Outcast says, it didn’t need to be rushed, and if we were able to sell Yarmo for basically the same money and save, what?, triple the wages, then what was the point in selling Grady?
  • If we get £15m for Yarmo I'd fully expect our board to put in a £25m bid for Grady (after the initial £10m £12m £15m £15.5m £18m bids obviously).
  • Would we get 20% cashback?
  • Would we get 20% cashback?

    All on clubcard points.
  • Not being funny, I hear people saying ‘we need x, y, z, so why are we wasting £30m on Tarkowski’.

Cos that is how you build a football club. A complete squad overhaul every 12 months is no way to build stability & a side.

I would much rather we be ambitious, sign one player who is worth having, even if it is our only signing all window, & then next summer we do the same in another priority position.

One player can transform the rest of the side. It’s been seen with van Dijk & was also shown by Payet. Yeah we need other players but if Moyes feels a proven, PL CB will double our clean sheet tally, then that is who we need to get in.
  • We shipped over 60 goals and finished on 36 points last season so I am struggling to see any merit in an argument which says we are stronger than last season if there were no more changes in personnel

I don’t think there has been much improvement at all under Moyes defensively
  • Luke can't work out if you want Tarkowski or not. Could you be a bit clearer. 😂
  • Luke the issue for me isn’t that we don’t need a Tarkowski type, we do. The issue is that we are £20m short in the valuation and we aren’t going to get him

I don't know anyone who is content with that.

After a ponder during my 8 hour shift this evening I think we actually have a stronger squad than we did at the start of last season

    We've replaced Roberto with Randolph
    Zabaleta with Johnson
    Sanchez with Soucek
Antonio has replaced Ajeti and Bowen has replaced Antonio
Plus we have Cullen to replace Noble when he needs a rest

Hugill and Diangana were both on loan so don't count (although I would have loved to see Bowen/Diangana played together as wingers).

    I don't see how we're weaker

    Well how about that

    Yeah he’s alright I suppose...

yoyo wrote about people being content with 5th from bottom to which I responded "I don't know anyone who is content with that."
  • Old news nothing changed

I agree in concept, but my issue is that you should do 1 or 2 positions when the rest of the team is set

Did we not buy quality last summer. Haller and Fornals were good quality payers, and you can argue that we needed to go big on a striker

But we needed to replace Obiang (and Kouyate who we neve replaced) and improve at full back, and we suffered

I'd like Tarkowski, but as long as it also allows us to get a new LB

Ironherb, I was being a tad facetious. I know we all wish for the best.My point really is ( in my opinion ) we have no strengthen in depth. Soucek and Bowen great additions but I don't really think our squad is strong enough for us all to feel relaxed and comfortable. An injury to rice or Soucek , or Antonio or Haller ( should he find he's goal scoring boots ) and we're struggling. I'm therefore not content with this transfer window so far. There's still time and like everyone I remain hopeful.
  • Would be all over Brewster on loan

Looks a real talent and someone who can be a great option, but I wonder if Liverpool thinks he wil get enough game time as he probably won't start over as that denotes Haller to 3rd choice
  • I didn't say i was content, I simply observed that in my opinion we have a better squad than we did at the start of last season.

I would have been content if we'd only signed Soucek on a permanent deal and held onto Diangana but I'm used to disappointment.

I agree you with DM that you can’t overhaul a team in one window so buying key players for each position takes time but are we in greater need of full backs than a centre half? Van Dijk could join us but would struggle if we were weak on the flanks.

I think van Dijk would fit in well after that bloomer. :)
  • =) but he has got a decent front 3 to bail him out for the odd mistake.
  • PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD BUY A LB!!
  • Aston Villa linked with a new Gk, midfielder (Radhica) & striker (Traore). They just escaped relegation & are doing something to ensure they have a better season. Didn’t they buy Ollie Watkins the other day.
  • A decent 'keeper, too. Maybe we should be in for him.

    But we're not, obvs.
  • West Ham are interested in a move for Brighton's 26-year-old English winger Solly March and have started negotiations. (90min)
  • We need a new captain. Noble has had his best days and doesn't seem to gee people up on the pitch. His sideways / backward passing really irritates me; not entirely his fault though if there is no movement in front of him. LB, RB, CB and a CF who is mobile - we dont need much!!
  • GK
    RB
    LB
    CB
    CM
    LW
    ST

That is where we are now, for what we need.
