  • Good read
  • A couple of comments from that:

    Big Gob Rob:
Apparently Jack Wilshere is in the shape of his life and will be like a new signing, so they have hope.

    Matt Davis reply:
The shape of his life is the outline of a man lying prone on a treatment table.... So yeah, he probably is!

Is it possible that the current turmoil can help to explain why Ngakia turned a contract extension down and went to relegated Watford instead?
  • The turmoil wasn't current when he left.
  • Herb, how do you know there wasn't some kind of undercurrent of dissatisfaction, because it was definitely a weird decision by Ngakia.
  • Hector Bellerin is now the second largest shareholder at Forest Green Rovers, the world's most environmentally friendly club

How is that even remotely allowed? What if they meet in the cup?

Apparently the investment is under the threshold considered for a conflict of interest.
  • Paul Scholes had to sell his Salford stake when he took over as Oldham boss, because it was over a certain limit. I think Pique co-owns a team in the lower Spanish leagues too
  • Isn't it no more than a 10% holding if you are connected to football in another way?
  • Not sure but do we know what is stake is anyway? Maybe it doesn't take that much to become the second-largest shareholder?
  • Enjoyed this article on Rav which fills a lot of gaps, including that Man U didn't allow him to take his ADHD medication (and I assume that's continued since). https://theathletic.com/2046045/2020/09/09/ravel-morrison-manchester-united-west-ham-lazio/?source=emp_shared_article&redirected=1

Outcast - is it worth subscribing to the Athletic?
  • edited September 2020
I'm assuming you meant The Athletic, not the American magazine.

Yeah, I think so. Me and a few friends actually bought it together and share the cost but they do plenty of deals.

They have a dedicated reporter for every PL club, so there's loads of content and it's better than most. With the Diangana deal, you had them clubbing together several reporters who all had good sources at both clubs to get the details. Around the time of Pellegrini's exit, they did some really good stuff on what had happened at the club after the Burnely exit and the state of how the club is run.

From a professional point of view, The Athletic's reporting is the closest to the standard I would expect in my work, which really isn't the case on a lot of football journalism.

The guy who covers West Ham is not the strongest tbh but still gets some interesting stuff and I think he's improving. It's also nice to constantly have different angles (like a recent Diamanti interview).

Alderz, regarding the Atlantic, yes it is, especially if you want to know just how crazy politics is over there, and if you can get a "special offer" subscription, then even more so.
  • Thanks Outcast :+1: I think I’ll give it a go. And yes I did mean the athletic

Bubbles - maybe I need to buy two subscriptions then... 🤔
  • In other news, the Seven Dwarfs have been told they can only meet in groups of six. One of them isn’t Happy
  • I’ve had a lot of work to do this week, and I found that quite overwhelming at different points, so in between tasks I have been going back through West Ham transfers through history. I have gotten back to 1997/98 so far, and one thing I have noticed is that we have a long history of signing random players who make less than 15 appearances for the club before disappearing. This was particularly prevalent in the Redknapp era (shock). Tomorrow I am hoping to finish off all the Redknapp era signings before doing some #analysis to share with you all.

What’s that? Yes lockdown has been ok, thank you. Why do you ask?

Maybe we should try Lock UP for Alderz =)
  • And end up with stats etched onto the cell walls?

Right, so, as far as I can make out, since the start of the 2000/01 season SEVENTY-FIVE players that were signed (i.e. not academy graduates) have left the club after making LESS THAN TWENTY appearances (I've excluded people that were with the club for less than six months, because short term loans).

Of those, 46 made less than 10 appearances for us, and 16 made 0.

In total, these players have cost us £56.4 MILLION in transfer fees, and have brought in just £23.265 MILLION when they left. This is a loss of £33.14 MILLION on players that didn't even play 20 games for us.

Yes, this is over a long period of time, but I find it pretty revealing about some of our terrible moves in the transfer market.

    The top five losses were:
    1. Carlos Sanchez. We paid £4m in August 2018, and he played 18 times before leaving on a free this June.
    2. Albian Ajeti. Cost us £8m in August 2019. Scored no goals in his 11 appearances, and left last month for £4.5m.
    3. Janaai Gordon. Apparently (according to Soccerbase) cost us £3.5m when we signed him in January 2014. Made no appearances before leaving on a free transfer in August 2017.
    4. Calum Davenport. We paid £3m in January 2007 to bring him back to the club (he had an earlier loan spell). He played 14 times in more than three years before getting released in March 2010.
    5. Benni McCarthy. Cost us £2.5m in February 2010. Got released in April 2011 after making 13 appearances for the club (and scoring no goals).

To be fair to us, we managed to make a profit on ten of those :+1: (Nicky Maynard £1.1m, Adam Nowland £300k, Svetoslav Todorov £250k, Hayden Foxe £400k, Gavin Williams £50k, Domingos Quinos £1m, Richard Wright £630k, Clive Clarke £375k, Martin Samuelsen £850k, George Dobson £85k)

Of all transfers (not just the weird ones where they barely played) we made profit on 41 players that we sold - £108.54m, which is pretty good I think. On the flip side, 85 players have left the club at a loss - £194.4m.

Basically, what I'm seeing is that we've pretty much always been mad and erratic in the transfer market. I will take questions now.
  • Benni McCarthy also cost us £3m in pies and doughnuts by the look of him
  • Instead of SBOBET as the shirt sponsor Benni had Greggs
  • Instead of SBOBET as the shirt sponsor Benni had Greggs

And McDonald’s because his shirt was that large
  • Alderz: does Wilshere figure in that list, if we buy him out? And could you pair the signings with the manager at the time? I was expecting something a bit more detailed... ;)
  • Oh no! He's only gone and asked for details. :o
  • Shoddy work, Alderz.
