If you watch German or Polish TV, they refer to "Arsenal London", "Chelsea London", but "West Ham United". I have a feeling it's that they're used to the city name being in the club name, and they may assume that West Ham is the name of the city, like Manchester United, Newcastle United, Sheffield United, et al.
