€250,000 a week and Champions League football week after week every year of his contract, and the chance to add half a dozen trophies to his CV, may well let him put the downer of moving to Madrid from England behind him.
I think it's pretty obvious if it's a straight choice between avoiding stabbings in Basildon and laying in the sun drinking sangria in Madrid he'll still visit Madrid on holiday sometimes.
It will be a test for the Daves if he asks for a move but one they can win. Ultimately the situation would come down to he can play for no one else but us unless we agree to sell, he is also not of an age where he can sulk as by the end of his contract he would have retired or be very near. The worst deal they should come to in this situation is an agreement to one more season and should he still wish to leave then a buy out clause of 50m. Hopefully by the end of this season we have made further progress and Real Madrid have moved on. Failing this we got an extra season and a good price.
There is no reason for the Dave's to negotiate from a position of weakness as otherwise that new contract negotiation last season was the most wasted exercise ever, it simply said pay me more if I stay but if I want to go I will, and they must be smarter than that surely!
I've avoided this conversation so far... However, my personal opinion is that he will be playing for us next season.
But, as devils advocate (with a negative train of thought).... Dimi will star in Euro2016 right til the end
Be subject to massive bids Be eventually irritated we didn't let him join Madrid Be 'lethargic' in training and on match days Be burned out by the season/lack of rest and the Euros Be like a 2nd season Hazard Be 30 Be found out Be worth next to nothing Be our player for another 4 years on massive wages Be wondering why we didnt take the 50M for him when we accept a 4M bid in 2 years time from Toulouse
Is that what you want? Cos that's what'll happen ;nonono ;wahoo ;wink
Well let's hope Dimi isn't on this forum as there are a few folk more or less endorsing a decision for him to go there as if it's the obvious thing to do.
Personally i'm prepared to back the Dave's to follow through on what they've hitherto said on the matter.
Like Zlatan, Pirlo and Lampard, for example, he will continue to deliver well into his 30s. He has played in 30 or more league games every year since 2006/7 so in spite of the efforts of the likes of McCarthy, he clearly looks after himself very well
ExWHUemployee seems to be suggesting Madrid have indeed bid for Payet this evening.

If true, this is one big decision to make for both the club and the player. I am pretty sure that would be the highest transfer fee ever paid for a 29 year old.

Lolololololol
That would be Mark McKay mais non? ;lol
But yeah, football reasons are a good explanation for him leaving. I don't think he's going to be swung by Mardid or Essex.
If Dimi does go I don't want him going there.
But Dimi is a hammer.
