I can't find anywhere in the article evidence that the love affair continues are his words.. Maybe I blacked out in the middle of reading it, but I think this is the sub-editor's line
Good luck to payet Being a footballer is his JOB and like anyone in the workplace we all want the best deal for ourselves, footballers are no different
I don't think the club has done right thing and it isn't anything out of the ordinary. It seems lots of clubs are trying to tie down their big players to new contracts when they're in good form. Didn't we do it with Sakho last season?
Whether 68k or 90k, I don't think that makes him our highest paid player, does it?
And the age thing is irrelevant. Its unlikely he won't be sold before the end of his contract. If he does stay with us for several years then when he starts to decline he'll probably get offers from places like MLS where he'll still be able to entertain.
Luke, it could be advantageous to them, but also not - if they want to get him a bigger contract later on (China, MLS etc) their negotiating position will be weaker, surely? It is in their interests to leave a shadow of doubt so they can inflate the figure any potential new club would have to pay?

It probably does, now with the £68k a week (that never changed) and the £18k a week signing bonus.
Whether he plays or not.
When he plays, he's clearly our top earner.
And there ladies and gentlemen is your £100k a week footballer that Sully promised. Just a few years late.
Sadly only the Daves or Payets agent knows what the real deal is and we are left to speculate. The original news story stated his current wage was 65k plus 10k appearance and if that was the case I say that is enough as I would imagine he would already be the top earner with possible exception of Carroll and loaned palyers. Were he on 35k a week I would have no problem with upping him to the 65k rate. If they have gone to 90k per week they are not the businessmen I took them for sadly. Too early into his current contract and it will now mean every other players agent is on the phone. Kouyate just went up in price, as will probably a few others. But as already mentioned unless we get the info with regard what he was and is now on it's hard to feel it a good or bad thing.
I must say a friend of mine who I was discussing this with made a good point in just saying what do you care what he is paid, if it means he remains at the club that's all you want so don't worry about the details. I guess he is right but another part of you just hates this player (agent) power taking your club for a ride.
It's quite common for contracts to be revisited early, Deli Alli has just signed a new one in January. West Ham now realise his value to the club, and the likelihood we will build the team around him, so it makes good business sense imo.
We always have the option to sell him on at, what is reported, a huge profit. I don't see anyone being taken for a ride.
But I think with our policy we seem to get players from abroad on low wages. I remember Sakho was rumoured to be on only £15,000 a week, so got a wage rise when he was banging in goals. Same with Kouyate. He's rumoured to be on around £15,000 a week too so we are now in talks with him over a new deal. Our highest paid players seem to be those from English leagues.
This makes perfect sense, that's what they're worth at the time and the risk of adjusting to a new league will be factored in. If they do the business, thats great and they totally deserve the bumped up contract.
If I recall correctly we signed Sakho and Valencia in the same window, the former cost less than half of the latter therefore implying a lower expectation and therefore wage. He has delivered more than Valencia when fit (I like Valencia and not having a dig) and based of performance deserves the contract hike.
I suppose the alternative is to splash the cash on signing fees and wages for know entities but as w have seen with the big clubs that doesn't necessarily work out either (not that we have the resources to take this approach anyway).

(Which was behind both Moses and Song on 70k a week each and AC on £85k)
£25k a week appearance only if he plays.
£18k a week for the first year as his signing bonus of £1m split into installments.
Kouyate is on £38k.....
Don't ask for a link, just trust me ;cool

So Didier Deschaps has been following a player who plays for Senegal? ;hmm
Wonder if that explains Payet's non call-up.... Didier thinks he's pledged for Uruguay.
