  • sounds stupid to me, he should be the manager and leading his team in the game.
  • ;ok MrsG

To be honest, I'd much prefer them to be concentrating on the start of the season proper... But tomorrows game is now a sell out so Bilic really should be on the bench with Westley and Dicks.
  • It's not ideal, but there aren't many alternatives.

He was not appointed until the 9th of June. His backroom team was only in place the end of last week. He and his team had to await work permits before starting.

Westley knows all of the U21 players, as he works with them on a weekly basis. It made sense for him to take them. So then do you let Bilic take over once he is ready to work or say "you've started the pre-season with them, so you prepare for the first leg and I'll get more involved after"?

It's not ideal, but as we all know this Europa League stuff isn't ideal. You just get on with it.

I would personally like Bilic to be involved in the dressing room and stood on the sidelines with Westley, but allowing Westey to take centre stage.

    Me too Luke.

Cuz, I don't see how it is a shambles. Looks very well organised to me on the division of labour front.
  • Yeah, I have no issue at all with Westley taking the team tomorrow. It should be a formality so I'd rather Bilic concentrated on the first team and identified where we need strengthening on that front. Good that he'll be there, but Westley in charge is fine, IMO
  • I think he could of managed the team. I don't supose its the most difficult game to manage due to the opposition and lack of players available.

  • I'll do it...

I'll go and sit on the bench, after all I'm going to be there anyway ;biggrin

  • Chewing gum? Or knocking back some nice ;redwine ;lol
  • So will he actually be in the stadium?
Thought he would be presented to fans before the game at least?
  • And when will his press conference be? ;hmm

I am bothered that we seem to be taking this game very lightly. Too lightly in fact. It could easily turn around and bite us on the posterior like games against so called lesser teams have done before.
  • Slojo, there's 'lesser teams' then there's the 4th best team in Andorra....
  • Slojo - I know where you're coming from but I don't think we're taking it lightly. I think we're trying to find a balance and I'm confident the U21s, with the seniors available for the game, have more than enough to get a decent first leg lead ;ok
  • They are a pub side.

Sticking out the kids with Randolph, Tomkins, O'Brien, Amalfitano, Jarvis and Sakho will be more than enough to knock in 5 goals.
  • Westley Out!

(You heard it here first ;biggrin )
  • Mrs Grey ;lol

  • the whole team are part timers who we playing against. the U21s would beat them. No point playing players we can just rest. Better to play players who didnt get much game time last year and players returning from injury who need a few games to get back up to speed.
  • Think Hendrie, Burke, Cullen, Poyet and Lee will all start. Maybe Oxford, Knoyle, Brown, Henry getting game time too?

    Is it 3 subs maximum?
  • ;ok

I think it's also a five man bench.
  • In all honesty, I think we could be accused of taking it lightly if we let a man take charge who has only met half the squad, been in the job a week during which time the guys have spent as much time travelling as they have training and will know nothing about the youngsters, who will make up a good proportion of the side.

Westley has been helping prepare this team for the last few weeks so is surely better placed to lead it.

I have no doubts that Slav has made clear to him what he wants to see the players doing and that those picked will be out to impress the gaffa in the stands (or where ever he sits)

And remember there's only so much impressing they can do when only 50% fit. This is basically our first pre-season game. Players will be rusty, the match will be played at walking pace and there may be one or two shattered by the 60th minute mark. He won't be judging players on this game.

I do think it unfair of the club to only make this news clear (that Bilic will not be in charge and may not even be present) until the day before the game. 35,000 people there and I'm sure for a lot of them it was the draw of welcoming Bilic and watching his first game in charge, rather than watching a development squad game.
  • Good to see we are taking the competition seriously....
  • What's not serious? We should get through the first two rounds without breaking sweat, and don't forget we will have 2 legs to sort it out. The third round is where we pick a stronger team, who will be a further 4 or 5 weeks into pre season. I never go to a match to watch the manager and I fully expect SB to be in attendance and introduced to the crowd. That'll do me for now. COYI
  • Reckon its a sell out because its European football, in our last season at the Boleyn, plus a chance to hopefully see us score a few goals and dominate a game (which hasnt happened since at least December)

rakis, and also we are desperate for some football in the summer break ;ok

    And it's cheap.

I would hazard a guess that 5-10K decided to go, in advance because they "thought" Slaven The Beard Bilic would be leading/managing the team.

I would imagine that the club will parade him before the game though.

    ;ok

No other club I can think of would appoint a manager several weeks before their first game, and then for him not be in the dugout come kick off time. It matters not that it's an Andorran pub side and that the side will contain many of the U21s. Very strange to say the least
