I’ve always thought it should be that if the feet are level then the player is onside.

I agree with that in principle (I've commented as much above), but I just think in real time it's much easier for the linos (and let's not forget that way more than 99% of matches are officiated just by refs and linos, not VAR) to see the body rather than specifically the feet.
  • Watching the Madrid-Arsenal game.

Anybody else think that penalty shouldn't have been overturned on VAR?

Elsewhere, it's a solid decision to give a foul?

And weirdly (will need to check exactly as slightly dodgy stream) the yellow card stands for the player who committed the 'foul - not foul'?

Edit - card was for protesting.
  • Ref bottled it in my view Eze gets there just about first whilst the Madrid player gets his foot meaning he can no longer go after the ball, that's a foul.

VAR is not ruining matches, but poor inconsistent and cowardly judgment by those that use it is.
  • Not sure it was a clear and obvious mistake IMO
  • I don't think other competitions use 'clear and obvious' as part of their VAR system...
  • ✌🏻 Nomo’s this month ⤵️

I think (UEFA) including Champions league does @MrsGrey
  • Every day's a school day 😀
  • I wouldn’t be surprised if the ref, when he looked at it again, thought Eze had lost control of the ball as it went a few yards away from him so he made a meal of the challenge, not that that should make a difference.

    Tell me about it....!!!

I see that the World Cup half time has been extended from its regulated 15 minutes to whatever as FIFA, to please the Americans, are putting on a half time show organised by Chris Martin. Confirmed acts so far are Madonna, Shakira, an K Pop band and the Muppets. No confirmation yet that Coldplay will also perform.
Total disregard for the impact this will have on the two teams. I know this happens at the Rose Bowl but American football is totally different where players go in and out of play for minutes at a time.
BBC reckon the show will be 11 minutes long so they must all be performing at the same time.
  • Ironic, because very few Muricans will be watching. Why cater to them?? The worldwide audiences don't want it, they'd prefer to see highlights of favourite players, goals etc. And the Brits just want a decent pie to eat 😉

    Au contraire

That might have been the case 32 years ago when they first had the World Cup but things have changed

"Soccer" is either 3rd or 4th most popular sport to watch depending which polls you read, ranking below American Football and Baseball but swapping places with Basketball

Its the 2nd most played sport in the USA after Basketball

I've heard a lot of people saying that half time used to be 10 minutes, even that they still have 10 minutes at some matches in Scotland

    I honestly can't remember

    Anyone else?
  • Half time definitely used to be 10 minutes.
  • But when did it change? I really can't remember
  • Half time was 10 minutes allowed in the dressing rooms with an allowance for getting off and on the field. I can’t remember when it was changed to 15 minutes from half time whistle to second half whistle but it amounted to the same thing.
  • Probably Premier League changed it to 15. It's nearer 20 now.

    IFAB has an archive

In 1897 Law 7 stated "The interval at half-time shall not exceed five minutes, except by consent of the referee" and that's how it stayed for nearly 100 years

In July 1995 (kid you not) it was changed to "The half-time interval shall not exceed fifteen minutes. Competition rules shall clearly stipulate the duration of the half-time interval. The duration of the half-time interval may be altered only with the consent of the referee."

Central line shut between Leytonstone and Marble Arch for engineering work, I'm spare so just sat around Googling
  • I can attest to the growth of the game over here, every single school now has goal posts proudly on display year round, and that was simply not the case when I came over in 2003.

A cool story for you - a Scottish friend of my father in law was approached in 1967 to start a soccer youth program and the two of them founded Palatine Celtic Soccer Club - the story goes that back then they struggled to find any boys at all that were interested in kicking a ball but today, Palatine Celtic is one of the largest youth soccer franchises in Illinois running 85 teams with 1,200 registered young people happy to play in their colors.
  • Not surprisingly the colors being green and white hoops - I am sure that if my father in law would have had his way they would be playing in Red and White stripes 😊

I stand corrected. But will that translate to match attendance?
  • If you cast your minds back to Grandstand days kick off was 3pm with half time at 3.45 and second half kick off at 3.55. Teleprinter full time results starting coming in at 4.40 pm ie 45 minutes later.

Probably not, tickets are ridiculously expensive, reports are that there are loads unsold and prices are dropping on "re-sale" websites.

I'm sure expanding the competition hasn't helped, there will be 104 matches compared to 64 in 2022. Clearly FIFA doesn't understand basic supply and demand economics.

And how you had to wait until the teleprinter finished printing the line to get the final score.
  • Ah but what about when the technological revolution really gathered pace and you could follow the score on teletext.

  • One good thing if we go down , I won't have to watch Arteta doing his antics .As I will be watching championship games
  • So Southampton get thrown out of the Championship final vs Hull and Middlesbrough get reinstated for the “spygate” they also have 4 point reduction next year.

Given the seriousness of the allegation I do not think the league had any choice but to act decisively, a fine would certainly not have been appropriate but seriously- what an absolutely stupid thing to do.

The only problem I now have is who I favor coming up, Hull they finished a full 10pts behind Millwall and scraped into the play offs on the final day, Middlesbrough have more of a claim but lost on the field of play……thoughts anyone
  • Saints kick out of the playoff final .And given a 4 point penalty for next season ,
